Criticism of the quotas

A new voice is emerging from the ratings debacle: Matthias Steinmann, longtime head of research at SRG and inventor of Telecontrol, comments on the deadlocked situation surrounding the new panel and sees a possible way out.

As four months have already passed without the market having fully recognized the new television research, Steinmann writes that he allows himself a few personal thoughts and comments on the published expert reports and opinions without a mandate and without legal relevance. According to Mediaweek.ch a Opinionwhich he sent to former employees and business partners. Without Steinmann's knowledge, it had been placed on a Blog has been published. Matthias Steinmann confirmed the authorship to Medienwoche, but did not wish to comment further.

The whole thing is the result of a wrong strategy - starting from scratch with a new company and a completely new method. It would have been better to use his Telecontrol - he doesn't say this explicitly, but he probably means it in his 10-page document. Steinmann sees the termination of the measurement system as a possible way out. According to Steinmann's observations, the basic scientific requirements are simply not met. It is simply not possible to measure what is supposed to be measured. Steinmann therefore considers the data collected to be neither reliable nor sufficiently valid.

Mediapulse's argument that the old data cannot be compared with the new viewer figures (Werbewoche interview with Manuel Dähler, Director of Mediapulse) is thwarted by Steinmann with the simple assertion that experts are perfectly capable of making such comparisons.

Steinmann sees a possible solution to the "disaster, there is no other way to describe it" in a quick end: "Personally, I ask myself whether an end with horror would not be preferable to a horror without end. (uma/medienwoche)

Goldbach Interactive: The oracle of the sages

To celebrate Held Eco's 90th anniversary, Goldbach Interactive created a microsite featuring a personalized video contest. The website was developed in collaboration with My Talents and Impossible Software.

Users can connect via Facebook or a microsite, enter their first name and then access their "personalized slot machine": the "hero slot machine" consists of real actors, the so-called oracle of the wise. The microsite was created to tell the 90-year history of Held Eco in a convincing way, Goldbach Interactive said in a press release on Tuesday. Visually designed as an apartment with six differently designed rooms, it contains - in addition to the video competition - all the important information on the topic of "90 years wiser": milestones, products, tips & tricks for everyday life, partners and wisdom such as: "I was already green when short skirts were still a mess."

BPRA: Two-thirds of agencies with growth

The revenue survey and market statistics from the Swiss Association of PR Agencies (BPRA) show a 2.3 percent decline in revenue for 2012, attributable to exceptional factors. Two-thirds of the agencies reported organic growth of up to 34 percent.

The agencies assess the outlook for the current fiscal year as cautiously optimistic. The PR market continues to be influenced by an increase in project orders, the association said in a statement. Digital communication and social media are defining trends, it said.

Leading the Market statistics unchanged by Farner Consulting. Burson-Marsteller, YJOO Communications and Furrer.Hugi follow. The PR agencies in Switzerland that are members of the BPRA generated fee income of CHF 73.5 million in fiscal year 2012. This corresponds to a decline in revenue of 2.3 percent, with a 0.1 percent lower headcount. There were revenue winners and losers in all provider categories. According to the statement, the reasons for the revenue development of the individual agencies are not to be found in overriding market trends, but rather in the addition and loss of individual larger mandates, personnel changes in the agencies or the development in specific customer segments.

BPRA agencies indicate in the annual market survey that project business is increasing at the expense of basic mandates. Agencies also note that expertise on the client side is improving and that agencies are challenged to maintain and demonstrate the knowledge and experience edge. As in previous years, social media and digital communications are identified as defining drivers for agencies' business.

Roman Geiser, President of the BPRA and CEO & Managing Partner of Farner Consulting on the market survey says: "Despite movements at individual agencies, the market of leading agencies is characterized by stability. It is very pleasing that most agencies are also optimistic going into 2013 after a year of growth." There has been no change in the ranking of the largest agencies: The market continues to be led by Farner Consulting (-9.8 percent). Farner is now well ahead of second-ranked full-service agency Burson-Marsteller (-14,7 percent). This is followed by YJOO Communications (+15.5 percent) and Furrer.Hugi & Partner (+20.6 percent). The new member CR Kommunikation (+9.5 percent) made it into the top 5. Communicators and Prime follow in sixth and seventh place. Freicom, Grayling and Cabinet Privé de Conseils complete the top 10.

According to the industry survey, the driving customer sectors are healthcare, NGOs, foundations, associations and societies, followed by banks, insurance companies, finance companies, the pharmaceutical industry and the energy sector. Service categories in particular demand are corporate communications, strategic consulting, marketing communications, online communications/digital PR and public affairs.

All the agencies in the association are now CMS II-certified or will undergo the certification process in the current fiscal year. Next has just been successfully certified for the first time. With the CMS certification, the BPRA agencies want to underline their commitment to quality, according to the press release. Important elements in agency management such as employee training and development, solid project management and efficient agency processes are continuously developed with CMS.

Serranetga helps office gums get on their feet

It is well known that working while sitting is a real ordeal for the back. The Serranetga agency capitalized on this fact for the campaign of the gym operator Silhouette.

Under the slogan "Stand Up - For Your Back," the agency has created a Website which is intended to encourage people to stand at their workstations. The technology used is both simple and efficient: the webcam of the computer used determines whether the user is sitting or standing by means of facial recognition. If the user is sitting down, the website asks him to stand up and at the same time offers him the chance to win a trial subscription. If the user stands up, the appearance of the website changes and nothing stands in the way of a free trial.

Responsible at Silhouette Wellness: Marc Rotter (Operating Director). Responsible at Serranetga: Daniel Zuberbühler (Project Management), Pascal Deville, Samuel Textor (Creative Direction / Concept), Julia Miller (Screen Design), Erwan Eydt, Christos Margaris (Programming).

SLK: Naked facts are not always sexist

At its first meeting in 2013, the First Chamber of the Swiss Fair Trading Commission (SLK) had to rule on two complaints regarding sexist advertising. Despite the clear evidence, neither complaint was upheld.

Which depiction is more sexist: a female bottom clad only in a thong with the claim "You've got the plug ... we've got the can!", or a female model with her bum covered by a QR code or a text box with the request "Let's see what surprise is behind it for you!"? The First Chamber of the SLK did not make the answer easy. Ultimately, however, it came to the unanimous conclusion that "plug and socket" does not fall under principle no. 3.11, whereas the model does.

Erotic portal and swimwear

The principles of the Commission on Fair Trading state that gender-discriminatory advertising exists in particular if there is no natural connection between the portrayal of the person and the advertised product or if the person is portrayed in a purely decorative function as an eye-catcher. This is precisely what was the downfall of the "model advertisement". For the average viewer - the masculine form is certainly permitted here - it was not apparent that this was a swimwear advertisement; all the more so as the advertisement appeared in an environment that gave no indication of this. The female model has a purely decorative function, which appeals to voyeuristic thoughts and raises the hope of seeing the woman naked.

Despite the offensive claim, the SLK rejected the complaint against the poster for an erotic portal. For one thing, there is a clear link between the depiction and the offer. Secondly, the plug and socket do not refer to a man and a woman, but symbolically to the genitals. Even if the SLK ultimately denied gender discrimination, this is a borderline case. All the more so as the SLK does not make moral judgments.
