Facebook takes in more money via smartphones

Facebook's push into smartphones is paying off. In the first quarter, 30 percent of all advertising revenue came from mobile devices. That is a rapid increase: in the previous quarter it was only 23 percent and before that 14 percent.

The social network had introduced new forms of advertising for smartphones and recently even launched its own user interface for certain Android phones with "Facebook Home". "We've made great progress in the first few months of the year," explained founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday at the company's headquarters in Menlo Park, California. Total turnover increased by 38 percent to 1.5 billion dollars compared to the same period last year. Profit increased by 58 percent to a bottom line of 217 million dollars. Facebook exceeded analysts' expectations. The share price rose slightly in after-hours trading.

The world's largest social network now has a total of 1.11 billion active users per month. Three months previously, it had 1.06 billion. Three out of four users also or exclusively keep in touch with their circle of friends via their smartphone. The number has therefore risen rapidly. In relative terms, there are also more and more users who check Facebook every day - presumably also because access via cell phone is often easier than via computer. (SDA)

Youth radio station Powerupradio receives SRG prize

The 2013 Eastern Switzerland Radio and Television Award goes to Powerupradio, the children’s and youth radio station run by the Pestalozzi Children’s Village in Trogen. The award, which comes with a prize of 10,000 Swiss francs, is presented by SRG Ostschweiz—this time as an encouragement award.

At Powerupradio, young people get a taste of radio and present their own program, as SRG Ostschweiz announced on Friday. Once a year, the radio station goes on air for three weeks in the St. Gallen region. It can be heard via the FM frequency 93.6 or via the website Powerup.ch. With this project, the Pestalozzi Children's Foundation aims to promote understanding between cultures. Since 2006, broadcasts have also been produced outside the radio studio in the Children's Village. The project tours half of Switzerland with a broadcasting bus. In 2011, almost 1,800 children and young people took part. SRG Ostschweiz would like to promote and recognize the radio project with this award. Powerupradio also makes an important contribution to getting children and young people interested in the medium of radio, it says. The award ceremony will take place at a later date. (SDA)

Zünd and Michlig become Brandwork

Since Zünd Brandwork had been operating an agency in the Principality of Liechtenstein for many years and was looking for a suitable partner, the two agencies were able to implement a joint strategy with Michlig. Effective immediately, both agencies will operate exclusively under the Brandwork name.

Pino Zünd has been running an agency in Eastern Switzerland since the early 1970s and has also had a branch in the Principality of Liechtenstein since 1995 for the many clients of this independent state, according to a press release. Together with René Michlig and his agency Michlig from Ruggell FL, the two agencies have defined a joint future.

As part of the agency's development, both locations now only operate under the Brandwork brand. Telesuisse regrets SRG decision of the Federal Council

Telesuisse, the association of Swiss regional television stations, objects to the Federal Council's decision allowing the SRG to broadcast major political, economic, sporting, and cultural events directly over the Internet in the future.

Until now, such Internet transmissions were only possible in connection with a simultaneous transmission in a television program or after a notification to the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM), the association wrote in a statement on Wednesday. With this decision, the Federal Council recognized the Internet as an additional distribution channel in the SRG's concession. In fact, the SRG has the possibility to create new channels directly on the Internet. This decision further destabilizes the media market in Switzerland and unnecessarily exacerbates the already existing imbalance between the SRG and private providers. In addition, the Federal Council had extended its authorization to include two areas (sports and culture), whereas Parliament had demanded authorization only for economic or political content.

In its statement, Telesuisse calls on politicians and the public to question the extent to which an absolute monopoly of the SRG in the area of information promotes democratic debate and the development of Switzerland.

Last but not least: all-clear at 11:34 a.m.

Oops! The SDA made a small mistake on Thursday that was a bit puzzling at first. But everything is fine again now.

One report at 11:09 a.m. had a somewhat confusing title that sounded more like a mobilization order than a news agency: "Right-wing extremist murder spree in Germany can finally begin". First thought: That's quite something! Just twenty minutes later, the all-clear: a new version with a new title ("Trial for right-wing extremist series of murders in Germany can begin"). And a note to all the confused editors who were overwhelmed by the "find the difference" game: "Note to the editors: title rewritten". Note to the SDA: Thanks for the suggested change. (hae)

39 "Enemies of press freedom" worldwide

They order censorship, imprisonment, abductions, torture, and killings—thereby suppressing information and free reporting: Reporters Without Borders (ROG) has named 39 «enemies of press freedom» on World Press Freedom Day, May 3.

Most of the "enemies of press freedom" listed have been on the list for some time, but five have been added this year. In one case, an incumbent has simply replaced his predecessor, according to the press release: The new Chinese President Xi Jinping has taken the place of former President Hu Jintao on the list. This is because the Chinese system's repressive approach to freedom of information has not changed.

In addition to Xi Jinping, the Syrian rebel group Jabhat Al-Nosra is also new to the list - this means that an armed group from the opposition is listed alongside President Bashar al-Assad. The Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood is also new to the list, as representatives of the organization do not want to allow any information spring and certainly no critical information after the "Arab Spring" and are striving to fill important media positions with "loyalists".

Also new on the list are armed groups such as the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), Baloch Liberation Front (BLF) and Musallah Defa, which are active in Pakistan's Balochistan region and have made it one of the world's most dangerous regions for media professionals. The Pakistani intelligence and secret services have long been on the list of "enemies of press freedom". Finally, extremist religious groups in the Maldives are aggressively targeting and intimidating media professionals and are therefore new to the list.

Most of the politicians, groups, militias and extremists already on the 2012 ROG list have not improved their treatment of freedom of information and media professionals. These include Kim Jong-un in North Korea, Issaias Afeworki in Eritrea and Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov in Turkmenistan, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Iran, Taliban leader Mullah Omar and the Israeli army. The list also includes criminal organizations and paramilitary groups, often linked to the drug trade - the "Zetas" in Mexico, for example, the "Urabeños" in Colombia and mafia-like organizations in Italy - who take action against investigative media professionals and the media when they deal with them and their business.

Four former "members" are no longer on the list. The former Somali Minister of Information and Telecommunications, Abdulkadir Hussein Mohamed, is no longer a minister, and his successor appears to be more reserved towards media professionals. Also removed from the list is Burmese President Thein Sein, under whose presidency the military junta was dissolved, all imprisoned journalists and bloggers were released and pre-censorship was abolished.

The list also no longer includes the security forces of the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and those of the Hamas government in the Gaza Strip, as the number of their violations of press freedom has decreased over the past four years - although the freedom of information situation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip remains a cause for concern. Finally, Eta was removed from the list as there have been no more attacks on journalists or media since 2011. Some journalists in the Basque Country still have to work under police protection, so ROG will pay close attention to how Eta now behaves towards freedom of information and will not forget the Eta victims among media professionals.

New this year is the form in which ROG presents the "enemies": they introduce themselves in ironic self-portraits or are called to account for their crimes against press freedom in the form of fictitious accusations.

The list can be viewed at this link can be downloaded as a PDF file.

Webtech: Study choice check launched

News from Studium-Schweiz.ch in Altdorf: The portal for choosing a major, higher education, and continuing education recently launched an online major selection tool. Webtech developed it in collaboration with Plan Z.

The Check Among other things, it is intended to help prevent students from dropping out of university, as a hasty choice of study often leads to an equally hasty dropout, according to a press release.

Bruno Bürgi from Webtech developed the test in collaboration with the Berlin office Plan Z. It is intended to be a real help for future students. "We have designed specific questions that can be easily answered in around ten minutes using a smartphone or PC," explains Bürgi. As a result, the three most suitable fields of study are displayed and specific suggestions are given for each main subject as to what can be studied where. Anyone who registers will receive a detailed analysis in PDF format.

So that the Study choice check Bürgi and his team have set up both professional advice services and a study choice hotline to ensure that students are not just left in the room as computerized decision-makers. These are managed by John Dubacher. He is a secondary school teacher himself and is on hand to provide prospective students with experience, advice and support. The service is free of charge until summer 2013 as part of the introductory phase.

Schawinski wins against Lebrument in federal court

The Federal Supreme Court has upheld an appeal filed by Roger Schawinski against Hanspeter Lebrument. Schawinski had sued Lebrument for infringement of personal rights and a violation under the Unfair Competition Act (UWG).

The jurisdiction was unclear, according to a statement from Radio 1. The Zurich Commercial Court had previously ruled in favor of Lebrument. Roger Schawinski took the case further and has now won before the Federal Supreme Court. Lebrument must pay the court costs of 5,000 francs and a party compensation of 6,000 francs to Schawinski. This now clears the way for a substantive treatment by both the Commercial Court in the matter of UWG and the District Court in relation to the claim of infringement of personality, the statement continued.
