First posters with NFC chip in Switzerland
The first posters with an integrated chip have been on display in Switzerland since the beginning of this week. This uses so-called NFC technology, with which data can be easily transmitted to cell phones. APG has equipped 150 poster sites in Zurich with NFC chips.
The posters advertise Zurich Zoo, where the female elephant Indi is expecting offspring soon. NFC stands for Near Field Communication. Anyone with an NFC-equipped cell phone can hold it up to the chip and be forwarded directly to a website. A competition is held there to find out when the baby elephant will be born. The advertising campaign with Zurich Zoo is a "showcase", explained APG's Head of Marketing and designated CEO Markus Ehrle to the news agency SDA on Thursday. "We hope that other poster customers will come up with the idea of running campaigns with NFC." Next month, APG's competitor Clear Channel will launch the technology in Bern. Initially, 115 poster sites there will be equipped with chips, as the company announced in March. Clear Channel spokeswoman Anne-Catherine Rüegg said on request that the company is currently in talks with various customers who are interested in a campaign.

Markus Ehrle expects NFC to open up "new possibilities" for advertising. Unlike QR codes, for example, there is no need to download a special app to transfer data, he said. The big disadvantage, however, is that the iPhone does not currently have an NFC chip. "This means we can't reach 40 percent of cell phone users with the new standard." This is why the square QR codes, which can be photographed with a cell phone, can still be found alongside NFC chips at APG and Clear Channel poster sites. (SDA)
