New director of the Lucerne Trade Association

Gaudenz Zemp will take office as the new director of the Lucerne Trade Association on August 1. On Wednesday, the Central Board elected the 51-year-old marketing specialist to succeed Werner Bründler, who is retiring.

As announced by the trade association, Zemp has been a member of the Executive Board of Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts since 2008. He is responsible for marketing and communication. Zemp will head an internal support unit of around 30 employees. Before joining the university, Zemp was co-owner of a marketing and advertising agency in Zurich. Last but not least: Mini Kiosk

To promote Coca-Cola's new mini cans, Ogilvy Berlin set up mini kiosks. A real eye-catcher!

For environmental reasons, the trend should actually be moving away from beverage cans. Nevertheless, beverage manufacturers are finding this shift difficult. On the contrary: Let’s recall, for example, the launch of Rivella cans last year—it’s hard to understand why that was really necessary. The cola can, however, has a particularly large following. This is less surprising, since the drink simply tastes better from a can than from a PET bottle. The only thing that actually tastes better is the stylish—but impractical and, depending on how it’s used, dangerous—glass bottle.

At first glance, Coca-Cola’s launch of the 1.5-deciliter can doesn’t make much sense, but on second thought, it makes a lot of sense. After all, when you’re craving a Coca-Cola, that craving is usually satisfied after just one or two sips of this sugar-laden, acidic bomb. The rest is usually just an unnecessary extra. The tooth fairy thanks you.

To promote the mini cans, Ogilvy Berlin set up cute mini kiosks in five German cities—complete with mini chairs in front! In addition to the mini cans, other mini products were also available for purchase. The enthusiasm of passersby, on the other hand, was huge—at least according to the case video. But in this case, we’re happy to believe it—if only because of the mini chairs. (hae)

The most popular online advertising providers in 2014

D.Core surveyed online and marketing decision-makers, as well as representatives from advertisers and media agencies, about their satisfaction with online marketers, publishers, and ad networks.

The 2014 Customer Satisfaction Study presents customers’ perspectives on individual advertising providers in the Swiss market. Based on the study, advertising providers gain an overview of how their services are perceived by customers and can use these insights to improve their range of services or to better communicate services and unique selling points that are not effectively positioned in the minds of customers.

In addition to overall satisfaction, detailed questions were asked for each advertising provider regarding integration and delivery, tracking and reporting, the likability and competence of contact persons, and innovation in online advertising formats, etc. The study thus once again provides a benchmark for Swiss online advertising providers and offers marketers and publishers concrete starting points for improving their services and offerings for agencies and advertisers. In total, 23 marketers, publishers, and ad networks were evaluated in over 130 interviews—conducted both by phone and online—between February and April 2014.

Results from the 2014 Customer Satisfaction Survey are available for the following advertising providers:

As was the case last year, the Adwebster advertising network took first place in the overall rankings, making it the most popular online advertising provider of 2014 as voted by customers. Second and third place go to NZZ Netz, the online marketing arm of the NZZ Group, and Adello, the up-and-coming Swiss mobile network. NZZ Netz thus takes first place in the «Top Marketers/Publishers» category.

Teil.ch: Guerilla campaign for Foxtrail

Teil.ch caused a sensation with a campaign for the opening of Foxtrail in Lausanne. A guerrilla marketing campaign featuring posters and flyers was supported by a YouTube video and media outreach by the PR agency Contcept Communication.

Foxtrail used a guerrilla campaign to draw attention to its new offer in Lausanne: by searching for Foxy - the little fox who lived with grandmother Hélène and had apparently escaped on a walk. Her granddaughter Léonie helped her search in Lausanne with the help of posters and flyers as well as social media. A finder's reward of 500 francs was offered and a YouTube film was created where Hélène asks to help her find Foxy. Photo montages of Hélène, Léonie and Foxy caused a stir, were shared many times and spread so quickly on Facebook. "The advertising materials were deliberately implemented in a hand-knitted style so that the invented story would be received as credible for as long as possible," says Martin Zeiter, creative director of Teil.ch. This succeeded with part of the target group until the denouement, while still others began to speculate about who might be behind the story. The campaign triggered a wave of sympathy and was lively discussed in the media and on Facebook. Within a short time, the Facebook page "Renard disparu" had over 1000 fans.

The campaign was designed and implemented by the communications agency Teil.ch. The PR agency Contcept Communication took over the communication on Facebook as well as the media work. "The aim of the campaign was to draw attention to the new offer in Lausanne in an unconventional way," says Thomas Bösiger, Head of Marketing and Sales at Foxtrail, the popular leisure and group experience.

The winners of the 16th Swiss Photo Award

On Thursday in Zurich, the jury of the Swiss Photo Award – EWZ Selection selected the winners in seven categories. Works in the categories of architecture, editorial, fashion, art, free, reportage, and advertising were each awarded 5,000 francs.

Nominated were 21 photographers from all over Switzerland. The first prize in the architecture category went to Zurich-based photographer Stefan Jaeggi. It shows small but crucial parts of buildings, annexes, balconies, transitions and parapets in the La Défense neighborhood in Paris. The work very cleverly draws attention to how our perception of the city is shaped by such architectural details, the jury noted.

The Basel photographer Andri Pole convinced the evaluation committee in the Editorial category with his images from the Cern research center in Geneva. His images, published in book form, do not show the complex scientific world of particle research, but the people behind it, going about their daily work in their secluded world.

Stacks of used cardboard tied together, ready for disposal the next day, have Jan Hofer from Zurich won the prize in the Fine Art category. With the One-Night-Sculpture, Hofer succeeded in placing the everyday in an art context through the act of photography, the jury acknowledged.

First place in the reportage category went to Scott Typaldos with his black-and-white story about mentally handicapped people in a home in the Albanian part of former Yugoslavia. The photographer from Lausanne conveys an atmosphere in his pictures that gets under the skin. According to the jury, "it's almost as if we can smell and see what is being fed." Typaldos explains everything in a few pictures and fulfills all the requirements of his reportage photography.

The dilemma photography

The viewers are plunged into a dilemma by the two Zurich photographers Joakim Cortis & Adrian Sondereggerthe winners of the Free category. What is real in their pictures, what is posed? In this way, they address the fundamental question of photography as a depiction of reality, without wanting to appear didactic.

In the Fashion category Yann Gross from Chexbres VD took the victory. In the advertising category, the first prize went to Thomas Stöckli from Zurich. In an idiosyncratic way, he staged a venue in Europaallee at Zurich's main train station that combines store and studio under one roof by means of an ingenious suspension system.

This year, the international jury of experts evaluated 713 works with 5346 images by 570 photographers. 54 works with 21 nominees made it onto the shortlist for the category awards. The works will be on display until June 1 at the Selnau substation of the Electricity Works of the City of Zurich (EWZ) and at the Photobastei on Bärengasse in Zurich. (SDA)

14 days without electricity

At this year's customer event on Wednesday evening, Künzler Bachmann Directmarketing gave attendees a live experience of a total blackout.

14 days without electricity, in a world where everyone and everything is electrified - that was the motto of the event the agency held for its clients on May 14 at the g27 restaurant in Zurich. The keynote speaker was bestselling author Marc Elsberg. In his latest novel "Blackout", the Austrian author tackled the dramatic idea of a complete power blackout and meticulously researched what it would mean for a technologized society to be completely cut off from the energy supply. During his reading, which lasted about an hour, he provided insights into the genesis of the novel and the state of emergency, which Elsener says is more realistic than one would think due to the large-scale networking of the power supply.

Nicole Althaus: From We Parents to NZZ am Sonntag

Nicole Althaus, Editor-in-Chief of Wir Eltern, has decided to leave the company at the end of August 2014. She is moving to the editorial office of NZZ am Sonntag.

Nicole Althaus took over as editor-in-chief of the Swiss parenting magazine "wir eltern" on September 1, 2010. As Journalist of the Year 2010 and a leading opinion leader on the role of modern women in society and the family, she was instrumental in the reorientation of "wir eltern". She is leaving AZ Medien at the end of August 2014 at her own request. A successor is being sought for the vacant position. Axel Wüstmann, CEO of AZ Medien, said in a statement: "Nicole Althaus has significantly shaped and developed our Swiss parenting magazine Wir Eltern as an excellent editor-in-chief. I would like to thank her for her successful commitment."

Nicole Althaus will join the NZZ am Sonntag as a member of the extended editorial team on September 1, 2014. Althaus will take over the newly created organizational unit Magazines. NZZ am Sonntag has recently greatly expanded its activities in this area with the real estate magazine Residence and the film magazine Frame. Althaus will also work as a columnist and author.

Before joining Wir Eltern, she was involved in the conception and launch of the mommy blog on Tagesanzeiger.ch, which is one of the most successful blogs in Switzerland. Her journalistic career began in 1997 at Landbote in Winterthur and then at Annabelle and the news magazine Facts. Althaus studied German and art history in Zurich and Berlin, graduating in 1994. In 2010, she was named Journalist and Columnist of the Year by the magazine Schweizer Journalist.

Valencia: A dirtbag makes clean

The Basel agency Valencia Kommunikation has chosen an unconventional approach to tackling littering with its "Drecksack" campaign.

This summer, "littering," the careless abandonment of spontaneously generated waste, will once again be a problem in all Swiss cities. In Basel, the authorities and the business community have therefore launched a joint campaign. Valencia Kommunikation won the budget for this campaign with its "Drecksack" concept in a pitch. During the summer, a free plastic garbage bag - the Drecksack - is handed out at participating stores around littering hotspots when take-away purchases are made. The Drecksack is not only practical for anyone who finds disposing of sticky or greasy packaging too tedious, with its catchy name and green signal color it also draws attention to the littering problem.

But with the dirt bag, correct action is also rewarded. As an additional incentive, it is printed with a winning number. Anyone who registers on the mobile Dirtbag website and enters this number will, with a bit of luck, receive an electronic voucher for an instant prize offered by the promotion partners.

In addition, more dirtbags will be drawn from the containers every week, and their "owners" will be rewarded with a weekly prize. At the end of the campaign, an additional grand prize - a party on a Rhine ferry worth 3'000 Swiss francs - will be given away among all registered participants.

The Drecksack campaign runs in Basel during the summer months and is supported by Coop, Denner, Manor, McDonald's, Migros, Valora, Sutterbegg, the canton of Basel-Stadt, the trade association and Pro Innerstadt.

Komet: New typo subjects for Visana

Komet has developed new typographic designs for Visana. The visuals focus on branding and relevance to current events.

Visana's typo campaign demonstrated its versatility over the weekend: in a playful way, the familiar red arc of the logo and the baseline linked the health insurer's service promise with current events. At the 33rd Grand Prix of Bern, Visana accompanied all runners with posters along the race course and motivated the participants on their ten miles through Bern. The ambient campaign was a successful occasion to prominently position the Visana brand while reaching a broad audience. The changeable typo-visuals have also been providing variety at Visana's headquarters in Bern's Weltpoststrasse since the beginning of 2014. After the start with the Easter subject, the three-part poster series was updated and appeared on Mother's Day weekend with a very special message for all moms.

JvM/Limmat: Gian, Giachen and the stupid Munggen

Jung von Matt/Limmat has created a new TV commercial for Graubünden Ferien. Included again: the ibexes Gian and Giachen.

The most famous natives of Graubünden are back in a new TV commercial. The two ibexes Gian and Giachen enjoy the mountain summer in the Grisons countryside and watch a few wild animals intently. But the peace and quiet is deceptive. Their roommates have other plans. Giachen the ibex is particularly annoyed by this. Graubünden is wild and authentic, and the following antipoles to everyday life in the lowlands stand for this: the oldest national park in the Alps, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary and is a symbol of untouched nature. These are also the most spectacular views and panoramic trails imaginable.

Net-Metrix: Digital core customers

The industry organization Net-Metrix has published its latest figures on website usage in its report «NET-Metrix-Profile 2014-1.» The study highlights how the regular users of various websites differ from one another.

At 54.5 percent, Bluewin has the largest proportion of returning users in Switzerland, i.e., users who visit this website several times a month. It makes no difference whether the users surfed Bluewin once on a PC and another time on a smartphone, they are recognized as returning users. Most of these loyal Bluewin users come from the age group between 35 and 54 years (42.9 percent).

Returning-User (PDF)

Microsoft Advertising Switzerland (47.5 percent) and Blick Online (47.1 percent) are not far apart in second and third place in terms of the proportion of returning visitors per month. While over 60 percent of returning users at Microsoft Advertising Switzerland are women, this group at Blick Online consists primarily of men, with just under 65 percent of users.

46 percent of Tio.ch users and 43 percent of 20min.ch users (German-speaking Switzerland) visit the web offerings several times a month. These offerings rank fourth and fifth in terms of the proportion of returning users per month. What both websites have in common is that men in particular are among these "loyal" users.

At 20min (German-speaking Switzerland), the majority of digital regulars are also users of mobile devices (74.4 percent). In comparison, around half of the returning visitors to Microsoft Advertising Switzerland also surf via smartphone or tablet. With the current publication of the NET-Metrix-Profile study, the devices used for surfing by unique and returning users of various websites can now be viewed.

In addition to the range of "unique users", the key figure "returning users" can be seen as a measure of the loyalty of users to a web offering or an online brand, according to the Net-Metrix release on Wednesday. A returning user is more likely to become a customer or subscriber.
