TBS & Partner: 175 years of Lucerne Theater

The Lucerne Theater is celebrating its 175th anniversary—and has planned a particularly dynamic season featuring various flagship projects. TBS & Partner is ensuring that this anniversary is prominently highlighted in the theater’s annual communications.

A bank, a department store or a hornussen club likes to take a sedate approach to an anniversary, looking back and feeling proud. But how should a cultural institution celebrate its 175th anniversary without a sense of sedateness that doesn't suit a theater that feels anchored in the here and now and values cultural traditions as a driver of critical social discourse? The theater management approached TBS & Partner with this task.

Singing, speaking, dancing...

The Lucerne Theater has long used a tried and tested rhetorical device: it often communicates its principles as a conceptual three-step. Its character as a three-part theater is shortened to the formula "sing, speak, dance". It summarizes its innovative approach to cultural heritage in the dictum "remember, discover, renew". In this context, TBS & Partner developed an anniversary presentation with a basic dialogical structure. The anniversary logo "...175 years of Lucerne Theater" used in the anniversary year is linked via three points to a statement typical of the theater, cast in three terms, which is developed from the respective context. The cover of the program booklet, for example, features the irritating and succinct headline "I you we...", which is linked with
The logo "...175 years of Lucerne theater" in the foot communicates the fact that theater always has a social discourse in mind, which contributes significantly to a common cultural identity.

A poster series for the anniversary makes familiar word formations productive by separating them and relates the new meaning to the theater ("Gedanken Spiel Raum...").

01_luz_jubilaeumsauftritt_2

The play posters are also subordinate to this anniversary appearance and focus in their terminology on an essential aspect of the respective plot. For example, the dramatic plot of the musical "The Black Rider" is shortened to the apt short form "Kuss Schluss Schluss...").

Creativity in demand

Staging this concept across all media throughout the season is challenging. This is precisely the appeal of the anniversary presentation: every publication of the theater requires a small creative act in the anniversary year. This sets the Lucerne Theater apart from the stolidity of other jubilees, which simply add a number adorned with a laurel wreath to their logo...

Cross-channel purchasing behavior challenges retailers

A study by the University of St. Gallen shows which retailers are succeeding in Switzerland through cross-channel management.

A study by the Research Center for Retail Management at the University of St.Gallen (IRM-HSG), which was supported by Hybris software, an SAP company, reveals interesting developments in the cross-channel purchasing behavior of customers in Switzerland, Germany and Austria. The results indicate that online stores of cross-channel retailers play a key role in the purchasing process. Another interesting finding is that customers are generally becoming much more selective, which means that retailers need to realign their sales strategies.

The study examines the shopping behavior of 2,780 cross-channel affine customers. Cross-channel affinity is defined as customers who can name a retailer where they are familiar with both the online store and the store and where they can remember a specific purchase. The customer purchasing processes analyzed show that online stores are often used as a source of inspiration and a starting point for purchases. In the clothing sector in particular, many customers visit a retailer's online store first. Purchases from the electronics, entertainment media, food and cosmetics sectors still primarily begin in the retail store, but the online store is already in second place in the ranking. Looking at the entire purchasing process, the online store is now just as important as the retail store.

Search engines, price comparison portals and competitors' sales channels popular for cross-channel purchasing

In general, the online contact point (63.3 percent) has even become slightly more important than the retail store (62.6 percent), while a quarter of customers visit both channels. Search engines (39.4 percent), conversations with friends and acquaintances (18.6 percent), price comparison portals (16.7 percent) and the retailer's newsletter (14.5 percent) play a major role in the purchase decision. Consumers also frequently visit competitors online and in-store when shopping. Customers who visit several of a retailer's sales channels use competitors' sales channels more frequently than those who only shop online or in-store. In almost seven out of ten cross-channel purchases, a competitor is visited during the purchasing process. In contrast, a competitor is visited in only five out of ten pure online or in-store purchases. Cross-channel affine customers get an overview of the services of different retailers before completing the purchase at their preferred retailer.

Who wins the favor of choosy cross-channel customers

Swiss cross-channel retailers are particularly popular with Swiss consumers. Five of the ten most frequently named cross-channel retailers in Switzerland are domestic companies. Migros and its companies are particularly popular as cross-channel retailers in Switzerland and occupy the top three places. Coop and Interdiscount are also among the top 6 (see chart).

grafik-schweiz

Compared to 2011, Interdiscount, Media Markt and Esprit have also become much better known among Swiss consumers. Compared to the two neighboring countries of Germany and Austria, cross-channel retailers from the food (25 percent) and entertainment media (21 percent) sectors are particularly well known in Switzerland, while in Germany and Austria it is mainly retailers from the clothing sector (40 percent and 32 percent respectively).

The online stores of cross-channel electronics retailers are very popular in Switzerland. Compared to German and Austrian consumers, Swiss consumers visit their electronics retailer's online store far more often and also spend proportionally more money there.

How retailers in the DACH region (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) are trying to respond to customer change

Retailers are trying to respond to changing shopping behavior by responding flexibly to customer wishes and steering customers from the online store to the store. The study shows that customers are particularly aware of some of their retailer's cross-channel services. These include the option to use the retailer's customer card both online and in-store (increase in awareness of 9 percent since 2011), click & collect services that allow products to be ordered online and collected in-store (increase in awareness of 13 percent since 2011), and the option to check the availability of certain products in the retailer's stores in the online store (increase in awareness of 18 percent since 2011). Measures designed to bring customer frequency from the retail store to the online store are declining from the customer's perspective. The service of being able to access the retailer's online store in-store via tablet or terminal is perceived 17% less frequently than in 2011. Customers are also less likely to notice references to the online store in the retailer's store (-15%).

Thomas Rudolph, Research Center for Retail Management: "30% of consumers already combine both online and offline contact points in the purchasing process. This widespread cross-channel behavior requires consistent, sustainable and synergetic marketing."

Last but not least: At night in the furniture store

The good news: IKEA and Airbnb.com offer overnight stays at the furniture store. The bad news: Only in Australia.

Museums have long known that places that are populated by crowds of people during the day have a particularly fascinating aura at night. Many offer overnight stays and night-time visits from time to time. The magic that emanates from exhibits when they are "among themselves" has even made it into the movies with the two "Night at the Museum" films.

The idea of being able to spend the night alone in an Ikea store seems no less appealing. When silence descends on the huge halls instead of the screaming children and loudly planning couples, you start looking for a suitable place to sleep. There are plenty of beds.

To enjoy this rare pleasure, you can either hide under a Klippan sofa or behind a Besta chest of drawers at closing time before lying down in your favorite Malm. Or you can advertises can apply for one of the coveted places to sleep on Airbnb. The Australian section of the Community marketplace for the rental of accommodation recently started listing Ikea showrooms in three variants. Well rested - according to the description, you are woken up in an unusual but not unpleasant way - you can enjoy the famous Ikea breakfast the next morning. Free of charge! Oh yes, the overnight stay is of course also free (except for the registration fee if you are not yet an Airbnb member). And you can even take your bedroom home with you afterwards.

The campaign is a promotional campaign for Airbnb and Ikea. The overnight fun was created by The Monkeys agency. Good night! (hae)

Last but not least: On your marks, get set, bathing ducks

A rubber duck race took place this weekend at the «Alpamare» water park. On Saturday, countless little purple ducks whizzed through the «Rio Mare» river pool.

With tactical finesse, the bathing ducklings with starting numbers were placed at the start of the pool. Once sent off, the participants left their bathing ducks to the raging waters until the three winning ducks crossed the finish line again. The prizes included travel vouchers for exotic destinations, a year's supply of Passaia or summer Passaia bathing packages. Of course, everyone was also allowed to keep their iconic purple Passaia bathing duckling.

The race was organized by Passaia to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Fans were informed in advance via Facebook and flyers. And because Passaia is celebrating its birthday, the bathing guests were also given a present: anyone who showed a Passaia badge at the cash desk of the "Alpamare" received a 30% discount on admission. And, of course, a purple bathing duckling.

Who knows, maybe Passaia launched a new trend this Saturday: Badeentli races in the indoor pool. Because the way this summer has gone, the fall leisure activities will probably also be moved indoors. (uma)

Ombudsman reprimands SRF television for FIFA commercials

Swiss television has been reprimanded by the ombudsman for broadcasting undeclared de facto advertising films from the football association FIFA during the World Cup in Brazil. The case was made public by the online portal Infosperber.

The portal reported on Friday about the reprimand by ombudsman Achille Casanova. An Infosperber reader had contacted him. Casanova's final report is available to the SDA news agency.

The ombudsman criticizes television for a "lack of transparency". With the simple reference "a FIFA production", television could have created transparency. It was not clear from the title "FIFA World Cup Preview" that it was a production of the world governing body. The program was broadcast on SRF 2 at 1.10 p.m. on 26 days during the World Cup.

The text also constantly referred to "we", Casanova continues. However, most viewers would understand "we" to mean Swiss television and not FIFA. It is true that the FIFA logo was regularly visible. However, this was not enough to declare that the contribution originated from the association. The signet was in fact to be seen in all contributions from the World Cup.

However, there is nothing wrong with the broadcast itself, although the "Preview" magazine is on a different editorial or journalistic level than an in-house production.
After analyzing and looking at the magazines from June 12 and 26, Casanova criticizes the quality. The magazine of June 12 in particular "was a single hymn of praise for the World Cup in Brazil and conveyed the impression that all Brazilians were ... enthusiastic about the World Cup". But this is demonstrably not true.

Increasingly restricted access to image material

The ombudsman acknowledged that the SRF sports department, which he had asked for a statement, had complied with the program regulations. He also expressed understanding for the television executives. They are increasingly being forced to take footage for previews, analyses or background reports from the football associations or other broadcasters themselves.

The federations are increasingly seeking total control over recordings, sports officials complain. It is foreseeable that certain associations and clubs will produce the post-match interviews themselves. This endangers the freedom of the press.

Television obtains material from third parties on a daily basis, Casanova also admits. It would indeed be absurd to declare the producers of all live sports programs. In this case, however, it was not about a current sporting event, but about the news, portraits and stories about the teams from FIFA's perspective.

Obligated to broadcast by FIFA and EBU

According to television, the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG) had to take over the magazines when purchasing the broadcasting rights in the overall package regulated by FIFA and the European Broadcasting Union. SRG undertook to broadcast 26 30-minute magazines. According to the statement to Casanova, this is a standard international requirement.

The complainant does not want to accept this decision by the ombudsman. He is taking the case to the Independent Complaints Authority (UBI). (SDA)

Profit of the NZZ Media Group declines

The NZZ Media Group again earned less in the first half of 2014. Compared to the previous year's figure, profit fell by CHF 2.5 million to CHF 9.2 million. The main contributing factor was the continued decline in revenues in the print advertising market.

Operating sales declined by 3 percent to 234 million Swiss francs in the first half of the year. According to the NZZ Media Group's statement on Friday, this was mainly due to the sale of the delivery business. Revenues in the print advertising market fell by 4 percent compared to the same period last year.

By contrast, the NZZ Media Group recorded revenue growth of 7 percent in the digital advertising market. In the reader market, the company saw a 2 percent increase in revenues thanks to "rapidly rising revenues" from digital subscriptions and the acquisitions of Wiler Zeitung and Alttoggenburger in eastern Switzerland. Print revenues also increased slightly.

Total operating expenses decreased by 3 percent year-on-year to CHF 220.4 million. According to the statement, this was again due to changes in the scope of consolidation, but also to lower depreciation and amortization.

Higher costs were incurred, on the other hand, as a result of the investments in publishing and the acquisitions in eastern Switzerland. The operating result (EBIT) fell by CHF 1.6 million to CHF 13.5 million.

As declining revenues from the print advertising market continue, the company is currently "fundamentally" revising its business model, it adds. This is being done through targeted investments in technology and editorial teams. The aim is to tap additional sources of revenue in the core publishing business. (SDA)
