Popular initiative against TV fees fails

The popular initiative "Radio and television - without Billag" did not come to fruition. The initiative committee was unable to collect enough signatures for the petition, which called for radio and television to be self-financed.

According to the information on their website, the initiators only managed to collect around 9500 signatures during the collection period that ended on Tuesday. According to the website of the organization "Solidarity Switzerland" (SOS), which is behind the initiative, the collection of signatures via crowdfunding did not mobilize enough voters. The failure of the initiative was reported by the newspapers Blick and Le Temps. This is the second unsuccessful attempt by SOS: the organization had already launched an initiative to abolish radio and TV fees in 2011, but stopped collecting signatures prematurely.

Second initiative pending

The collection period for another popular initiative to abolish radio and television fees runs until mid-December. The initiative aims to ban subsidies for radio and television stations. Reception fees should no longer be charged.
Around 63,000 signatures have currently been collected, said the co-president of the initiative committee, Olivier Kessler, on Wednesday on request. It will be difficult to collect the required 100,000 signatures in the remaining seven months, especially as they cannot count on the support of a large organization. The initiative "Yes to the abolition of radio and television fees (abolition of Billag fees)" is supported by the Young SVP and the Young Liberals.

However, the Swiss electorate will be able to vote on radio and television fees on June 14. The revision of the Radio and Television Act, which provides for a device-independent fee system, will then be put to the vote. For private households, the fee would fall from the current CHF 462 to around CHF 400 per year with the system change. (SDA)

Havas expands creation management

The two Havas creative agencies in Zurich and Geneva are expanding their creative leadership. New and effective immediately, Folker Wrage strengthens the agency as Chief Creative Officer.

Together with the existing Creative Directors Michael Kathe (CD Zurich), Merlin Zuni (CD Digital) and Gabriel Mauron (CD Geneva), the creation team gains additional creative experience and a proven leader. Agency head Frank Bodin is very pleased about the new addition: "We were already able to work successfully with Folker as a freelancer. "Creating Future" is our claim - I'm convinced that Folker brings drive and an additional dimension to the agency that our clients can only benefit from."

Folker_Wrage-2

Folker Wrage studied psychology, among other things, and completed numerous courses at various universities, most recently the EMBA program at the Berlin School of Leadership, which he successfully completed in summer 2013. He has won over 100 international awards, was a Cannes jury member in 2007, is a member of ADC Germany and is always in demand as a lecturer. In his free time, he can be found playing tennis quite passably or sometimes as a DJ.

DDP: Successful Swiss agencies

Successful performance for Swiss agencies at the German Dialog Marketing Prize (DDP): Four medals were won at the German Dialog Marketing Prize (DDP). Our Germany correspondent Peter Ehm was there.

Berlin/Zurich - Rosemary ham from the Saalow herb pig, roasted Havel pikeperch and lukewarm apple strudel for dessert: it certainly wasn't the menu on offer that prevented the German Dialogue Marketing Prize (DDP) from creating a real gala atmosphere. There were bumps and stumbles in the dialog network. The small Swiss delegation, however, popped the corks: With four medals, Suisse made was more successful in Berlin this year than it has been for a long time. Havas Worldwide Zurich took silver, the agency at the airport and Wirz Wietlisbach Dialog both won bronze. The Swiss BMW campaign by Serviceplan even took gold.

Unbenannt-2_70

The DDP has been one of the most prestigious awards in the communications industry in German-speaking countries for over 30 years. Last year, the award was relaunched: from now on, the campaigns submitted will be judged on both creation and efficiency (Werbewoche reported). "We don't just want pretty pictures," says Patrick Trapp, President of the German Dialog Marketing Association, "we also want to know what the campaigns have actually achieved."

Sounds good. However, the industry's reaction was less euphoric: the number of submissions fell by almost 30 percent compared to 2014. Head of the jury Detlef Rump (rumpdialog) was undaunted: "An award must be a role model and is more than just press and a party." If the big players, such as Ogilvy, no longer take part, smaller and lesser-known agencies would have more chance of coming to the fore.

But things are not (yet) running smoothly internationally either: the euphorically announced alliance between the German Dialogue functionaries and the Austrian and Swiss associations last year has not yet been implemented. President Trapp: "It would have been desirable to do everything at the touch of a button. But there are technical problems. We will continue to negotiate." Neighborly relationship problems in numbers: Not a single DDP submission from Austria made it to the start line this year.

The Swiss on the other hand, were in Berlin and could proudly start their journey home. The winners:

- Gold went to BMW, Switzerland. The campaign, supported by print, ran under the title "Boring News - the most boring news in Switzerland". The campaign was developed and realized in Switzerland by Serviceplan Suisse.

Boring_News_A-1

- Havas Worldwide Zurich won DDP silver with its client Avnet Ringleader. The jury praised: "Packaging the NFC technology in a ring and integrating it into a coherent direct campaign makes this work stand out".

DSC07359

- Bronze went to Agentur am Flughafen (Altenrhein) with real estate client T. Ruggiero & Söhne. Here, the jury spoke of a "direct mail in which the message is brought to life in a playful way" and praised the "consistent reduction that creates curiosity".

- Swiss Post and its Zurich agency Wirz Wietlisbach Dialog also won bronze. The agency sent out a special pencil box under the title "Letter advertising is great". The jury: "In addition to useful writing instruments, the direct mail contains an excellently implemented insight." The work in the B2B sector clearly stood out.

At this year's DDP, a total of eight gold medals, 18 silver and 28 bronze awards were presented in 22 categories. Agency of the Year was Serviceplan, ahead of Saint Elmo's and GKK (see ranking). The prize in the "best in show" category went to Grabarz zweite Werbeagentur for its Ikea Lübeck opening campaign.

Y7K expands team

The young Zurich-based digital agency Y7K is continuing to expand its services. With Sophie Grossmann as the new Content Director, the agency aims to fully leverage the potential of the synergy between high-quality content and digital media.

"Content is becoming more and more of an issue, whether on the agency side or for our customers," explains Yves Sinka, Business Development at Y7K. To meet these new needs, Y7K is building its own content department, which conceives, produces and markets. "For us, content is the conception and implementation of exciting media content for all digital channels," adds Ruben Feurer, Art Director. The agency benefits from a worldwide network of experts in writing, photography, film and sound, animation, 3D modeling and illustration, and digital art. The group gained its first experience in the field of content as publishers of the cultural magazine Quottom, the digital art gallery Neverland Space and various film projects (Werbewoche.ch reported).

Almost simultaneously with the introduction of a content department, the digital agency Y7K launches a new website. An artwork by Adam Ferriss, created especially for the website, welcomes the users.

Sophie was most recently part of VICE CEE, where she was involved in the conception and implementation of branded content for Adidas, Philips, among others. She was also responsible for the company's press relations in Switzerland. Furthermore, she worked in PR and marketing at VIU Eyewear.

SLK approves three quarters of the complaints

The First Chamber of the Fair Trading Commission (SLK) upheld nine of 13 complaints and recommended that the advertising in question be modified or discontinued. There were four complaints regarding an advertisement for natural cosmetics.

According to the respondent, it is an international information service for consumers that is independent of the economy and therefore did not consider the SLK to be competent. However, the SLK came to the opposite conclusion. On its website, under the title "Chemical club instead of care: What's in our cosmetics" and in an infographic with the heading "Cosmetics: These ingredients make you sick", the service had criticized commercially available cosmetic products too clearly, advising against their purchase and, in return, praising natural products. At the same time, the website had served as an advertising platform for these natural products. This meant that the reporting had a direct influence on competition and thus the competence of the SLK, according to the Commission's communication on the first meeting in 2015.

Unbenannt-7_73
Screenshot Codecheck.info

The SLK subsequently complained that the impression had been created that the criticized cosmetics in Switzerland could contain prohibited ingredients such as the solvent 1.4 dioxane. This was misleading and disparaging for the manufacturer of the cosmetics. Equally misleading and disparaging was the fact that other ingredients, which are permitted by law up to a certain amount, were presented as problematic. The SLK considered it unfair that the information service referred to alleged scientific studies without specifying them in more detail or referring to contrary opinions. The use of test results by the information service had also violated the clarity requirement.

Adorned with borrowed plumes

The Commission also objected to a competition complaint against a construction company that had advertised on its website pipe systems that it had not installed itself.

The complaint against a retailer who had generally advertised Christmas trees from Switzerland in its communication, although these were not available in all of its stores, was also upheld.

Unbenannt-8_61

Other complaints approved included a gel that was said to slim, a magnet that promised stronger erections, and a pair of fitness pants that claimed to make people "visibly slimmer right away."

Unbenannt-9_64

On the other hand, two complaints against sexism were rejected: on the one hand, a poster of a mattress manufacturer with the claim "Sleeping can be like a wonderful journey", on the other hand, the advertisement of a Spanish car brand that had advertised its new model with the claim "A la recherche d'une espagnole bien roulée?". Directory assistance 1818 closes call center in Biel

The 1818 information hotline is shutting down its call center in Biel. A spokesperson confirmed a report to that effect in the NZZ on Wednesday.

Calls to directory assistance services are declining, the spokesman told AWP news agency. Therefore, the operational business will be shifted internally. In concrete terms, this means: Calls from Switzerland will be answered from abroad in the future. German and English calls will be forwarded to Austria, French and Italian calls to Morocco. According to the company, up to 66 employees will be affected by the closure in Biel. 1818 Auskunft is part of the kgb Group, as are its sister companies in Austria, France, Ireland and the UK. The New York-based company describes itself as the world's largest provider of telephone directory assistance services not provided by traditional telecoms groups, according to the NZZ.

1818

In Switzerland, Swisscom continues to offer a telephone directory assistance service under the number 1811. The competitor 1818 became known for its advertising campaign reminiscent of the glorious 1970s of Swiss skiing. The stars of the campaign are two men with distinctive moustaches who appear in the 70s dress of the ski team with bib number 18. (SDA)

Last but not least: outrageously effective

To convince marketing executives of the effectiveness of JCDecaux’s outdoor advertising, a Belgian agency took a rather bold—but successful—approach.

JCDecaux is one of the world's largest outdoor advertising companies. One of its core business models is this: The French company builds and maintains bus shelters, self-cleaning restroom facilities, and glass recycling bins for cities or transit agencies, and in return receives revenue from the advertising space displayed on them.

In Belgium, JCDecaux holds annual presentations highlighting how important and effective outdoor advertising still is today—and will continue to be in the future. The problem: Belgium’s top marketing executives are, unfortunately, always busy and never have time to attend the meetings.

BBDO Belgium took a rather bold, yet extremely creative approach to shake up the marketing executives. Without asking for permission, the agency printed a single poster for each marketing leader—to be displayed on a single billboard—featuring their name, title, and a JCDecaux email address. Unsurprisingly, the people featured soon became aware of the campaign due to the many reactions they received from people asking about the reason for the posters, and they—some of them annoyed—inquired about what the posters were all about.

Unbenannt-1_57
Bildschirmfoto-2015-05-14-um-08.34.05

The executives were briefed on the background: Just look at how effective even a single poster can be—imagine what a large-scale poster campaign could achieve. Speaking of effective: that’s exactly what the campaign was. Every single one of the marketers shown signed up for a JCDecaux presentation after receiving the informational email. (hae)
