TV coverage areas still problematic for RTVG
The federal government has made adjustments to the radio and TV regions in eastern and northeastern Switzerland. Nevertheless, the governments of Zurich and Schaffhausen are still not satisfied. According to the plan, Tele Züri is to be the only regional television station not to receive license fee revenue.
The federal government has made adjustments to the radio/TV regions of eastern and north-eastern Switzerland. Nevertheless, the Zurich and Schaffhausen governments are still not satisfied. The new Radio and Television Act (RTVA) stipulates that private TV broadcasters should receive four percent of the fees that previously only benefited the SRG. Anyone claiming money must fulfill a performance mandate. One license is put out to tender per coverage area. The coverage areas do not correspond to individual cantons, but consist of parts of different cantons.
According to the SDA report, the revised proposals still contain some criticism. The Zurich government is rebelling against the division of its canton into two parts. The largest part is to belong to an area which, according to the federal government, will not receive any fee support anyway because the area is by far the most commercially attractive in Switzerland. The canton finds it unacceptable that Tele Züri is the only Swiss private broadcaster that is not eligible to receive fee money.
The Thurgau government does not want Arbon and Bischofszell to belong to the Eastern Switzerland area and the rest of the canton to be allocated to the North-Eastern Switzerland area, but is of the opinion that the entire canton should be allocated to both areas on an overlapping basis. The Schaffhausen government insists on its own TV coverage area instead of its canton being allocated to the Nordostschweiz area (which consists of some Zurich and most Thurgau districts). The canton of St Gallen is pleased about the changes.
