Pink elephant: mythical creature for Bern

Cordelia Hagi and her agency Pink Elefant have been pursuing a great vision for about 10 years. She wants to develop the area "ennet der Aare" with monumental mythical creatures.

Behind it is the idea of rediscovering the five senses. A colorful antithesis to the digitalized world. Behind this vision is an association with members from politics and business. According to the statement, this association made the first kickoff possible with generous donations. Thus, the project could be further concretized. This includes the creation of a relief, the realization of a film with drone flight over Bern, as well as the webpage Delia.ch. In addition, the project was presented with a media conference moderated by Sven Epiney.

Ric-Communications is handling communications for Tellco Immobilien Zürich’s new real estate development project, Ostenberg, in the Liestal region. The result: A large portion of the apartments have already been rented out.

The centerpiece of both the online and offline campaigns is the website, which was designed using responsive design for mobile and tablet use. A 6-page newspaper-style mailing featuring in-depth information about the apartments and content about the location was widely distributed throughout the Liestal and Basel regions. The property leasing campaign is rounded out by accompanying ads in daily newspapers and on online portals, as well as advertorials and advertising on public transportation.

Apple IOS 9 ad blocker

Apple has announced an upgrade of its mobile operating system for this week, which will enable ad-blocking for the first time. Mark Forster explains how ad-blocking works and what effects can be expected in the Swiss advertising market.

Since the announcement of the new operating system, rumors have been swirling about whether and how an ad blocker functionality can be set up on consumers' iPhones and what consequences this will have for the advertising industry. Fears even go so far as to say that advertising on mobile devices may no longer be possible in the future. A brief explanation is therefore necessary.

Mark
Mark Forster, Adello Founder and CEO.

Mark Forster, what exactly will iOS 9 enable?
In addition to an improved keyboard, more flexible search, video overlay, etc., iOS 9 allows users to install content blocking software into the mobile version of Apple's "Safari" browser for the first time. In principle, this can also be used to prevent advertising. However, the iOS upgrade alone does not enable this functionality on any iPhone and iPad. The corresponding modification must first be made and activated manually by the user. Therefore, updating your device to iOS 9 does not block advertising yet. In order to prevent advertising, various steps have to be actively taken.

What exactly do users have to do to block advertising?
In a first step, users have to search for a suitable offer of adblocking software in the AppStore and install it on their device. Afterwards, the downloaded adblocker has to be activated in the settings of the iPhone or iPad. The best-known program from the desktop world is AdBlock Plus, which is now also available for iOS. By itself, iOS 9 does not block advertising.

How does this work?
Contrary to popular belief, adblocking only works in the mobile version of Apple's Safari browser. This means that ad blockers do not have access to Chrome, just as they do not have access to all other browsers. All mobile apps are also not affected by adblocking - such as 20Minuten, Blick or Watson).

What effects are to be expected?
In the short term, no noticeable effects are expected for the mobile advertising market. This is because the potentially blocked traffic share is in the low single-digit percentage range and thus many times lower than the growth in mobile data traffic.

Can you elaborate on this?
As a comparison, we can look at adblocker penetration on PCs, where such programs have existed since 2009. Today, six years later, around 198 million PCs worldwide have an adblocker installed. This corresponds to 6 percent of devices connected to the Internet worldwide (2015 Ad-blocking Report PDF). With regard to iOS 9, it should be noted that an adblocker only limits advertising on "Safari", but not on other apps. In concrete terms, this only affects ads that are displayed on a mobile site called up on "Safari". However, the use of mobile apps far exceeds that of mobile sites. In the USA, the usage ratio of app vs. browser is 85 : 15. Safari's share of the mobile and tablet market is currently 41 percent. Consequently, even if all iPhone and iPad users were to update to iOS 9 and download and activate an adblocker now, this would hide a maximum of 6.15 percent of ads. If we now assume that the spread of adblockers will reach 6 percent of all devices within 6 years, as is the case on desktop, the blocked mobile traffic will fall by 0.3 percent of the total iOS advertising inventory. Measured in terms of data volume, however, mobile traffic is expected to increase by 57 percent each year. The potentially blocked inventory of 0.3 - 6.15 percent is therefore negligible for the advertising industry.

Nevertheless, what does the introduction of mobile adblockers actually mean for publishers, advertisers and the more than 6.5 million mobile users in Switzerland?
We are constantly monitoring this development very closely. In our systems, we see such trends very early on and can thus react to any changes. The fact is that mobile traffic is still increasing by double-digit percentages every month. We also analyze this regularly with our publisher partners, who seem nervous. The situation is paradoxical: consumers are apparently not prepared to pay for content. Therefore, this content has to be financed through advertising. If this advertising is now prevented, the monetization for the publishers falls away, which is to the detriment of the quality of the media. This, in turn, cannot be in the interest of consumers. We at Adello do not view the spread of adblockers negatively. After all, those who install an adblocker deliberately do not want to see any advertising. An adblocker allows to reduce the waste of advertising to disinterested people. So if you recognize which user has installed an adblocker on a "Safari" browser, you should not show any advertising to the same user in other channels, if possible. It is therefore a matter of taking consumer behavior into account rather than fighting it. If, contrary to all expectations, mobile adblocking were to become widespread and significantly block out a certain advertising target group, it can be assumed that campaigns would be increasingly targeted in mobile apps. On "Safari," other forms of advertising that cannot be prevented will probably be given preference. After all, advertising always finds a way to the consumer.

Press Council: Privacy and identification

The Press Council has partially upheld a complaint against a news report in *Blick* and *Blick.ch*.

On November 13, 2014, Blick reported on the postbus accident in Endingen AG on November 11, 2014, in which two people lost their lives. The article dealt under the title "Their luck was perfect. The second victim Jonas M. (✝24) leaves behind wife and newborn child" with the fate of this young family. Among other things, the article was illustrated with a pixelated photo of the couple and described the life situation
of the victim.

The complainant objected to several errors. Blick had used a photo from the woman's Facebook profile without asking her and misused it for the report. By publishing the first name and the initial of the last name, the information on profession, marital status, former place of residence and the pixelated photo, the identity of the victim had not been protected, although there was no public interest in her identification. In addition, the report violated the duty of truth. Both the information about the hobby of the victim and the change of residence and the type of house were false.

The Press Council concludes that Blick and Blick.ch have violated Clause 7 (Privacy) of the "Declaration of the Duties and Rights of Journalists" with regard to the protection of personality rights by using a photo of the accident victim and his wife from the woman's Facebook page without her consent. In addition, the complaint is dismissed.

Last but not least: Jobs origin spreads on the net

Alongside the images of the dead refugee child and the Hungarian «beating reporter,» a new story is making the rounds on the Internet: The biological father of Apple guru Steve Jobs, who died in 2011, was a Syrian migrant.

Jobs' father, Abdulfattah Jandali, is said to have emigrated to the United States in 1954 to study there. His mother gave birth to Steve Jobs in 1955 but gave him up for adoption because her conservative American family did not accept the Syrian man (and thus a marriage). So little Steve grew up with Paul and Clara Jobs in Mountain View, California.

A tweet to that effect by David Galbraith from early September is currently going viral around the world. For example, the Huffington Post, the Chicago Tribune, the Daily News, and The Independent have already picked up on this gentle reminder. (uma)

Snapchat wants to make money from repeats

The fact that viewed photos disappear immediately is actually the highlight of the Snapchat photo service. Now the startup is reversing the principle: if you want to see three repetitions, you have to pay.

For $0.99, a user can re-watch three pictures or videos each, Snapchat announced late Tuesday. The offer is initially only available in the US. Previously, Snapchat had experimented with free "replays" - but they were limited to one replay per user per day. In addition, Snapchat introduced animations that can be inserted into selfies.

Snapchat allows users to send photos that delete themselves after viewing. The app is especially popular with young users, who also use it to send revealing pictures. However, the service has also struggled with security problems in the past.

Snapchat says it has around 100 million users a day and is working on a business model. The California-based company has so far experimented with video advertising and paid partnerships with companies, among other things.

However, according to internal figures recently published on the blog "Gawker", Snapchat only posted revenues of three million dollars from January to November last year - with a loss of 128 million. For this year, revenues of around 50 million dollars are targeted, according to the technology blog "Recode".

Co-founder and chief executive Evan Spiegel said in May that Snapchat had a plan to go public, but did not specify a time frame. Last year, Facebook wanted to buy Snapchat, reportedly for three billion dollars. However, the founders beat out the offer. (SDA)

Award-CC: Two trophies awarded

The winners of the Swiss Award-CC of the year 2015 have been determined: The communication projects of the energy company Swissgrid and of Hej Creative/Nik Schwab for Swiss Tennis were awarded a trophy at the Zurich Club Escherwyss.

It was already the eleventh award ceremony of the Swiss Award-CC. An eight-member independent jury of experts awarded the trophies along with four nominations and gave reasons for their decisions.

The neutral jury decided again this year as an independent and honorary expert committee. With its decision, it rates the aforementioned projects as "outstanding examples of networked and high-performance corporate communications in Switzerland". The chairman of the jury is Peter Stücheli-Herlach, Professor of Organizational Communication at the ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences. In his laudatory speech, he explained the jury's decision based on the advertised criteria for the award. The award was presented this year for the first time in exclusive partnership with the industry association pr suisse.

In addition to the two trophies, the jury awarded a nomination to four other entries. These are the following projects: Agentur Achtung! Hamburg for Swiss Airlines, Klinik Hirslanden Zurich, Namics 13 for Swisscom and the Urner Kantonalbank. According to the jury, these projects are "excellent examples of networked and powerful corporate communications in Switzerland". All nominees were presented with a certificate by jury member Cla Martin Caflisch of the pr suisse central board.

Representatives of last year's award winners SBB and SwissLife also appeared at the award ceremony. They explained how their award-winning projects had been sustainably implemented in the market - and that the award trophies had triggered a motivating response in the team and in the market. At the well-attended award ceremony, industry representatives exchanged views on trends and quality benchmarks in Swiss corporate communications. Singer/songwriter Andy F. surprised the audience with his specially composed song in Zurich dialect to accompany this year's award, based on his song "Züridate".

Award initiator Roland Bieri expressed his gratitude to the president of the industry association PR Suisse for the first-time exclusive partnership and thanked the many and long-standing sponsors, without whom this eleventh edition would not have been possible. As of this year, the award is supported by PR Suisse with its more than 1,500 members as an exclusive industry partner. The twelfth year of the award is already just around the corner; entries can be submitted from March 1 until July 15, 2016, and the award ceremony will take place on September 8.
