Internet providers want to prevent Switchplus from entering the market

Switchplus's entry into the market is facing fierce opposition. Now, established Internet service providers have filed for a super-provisional injunction.

The order obliges Switch to remove the naming and linking of the newly launched subsidiary Switchplus on the homepage. The Swiss registry for domain names considers the criticism of Switchplus' market entry to be unjustified and is disappointed that legal action has been taken. According to a press release issued on Tuesday, the providers were offered various solutions to resolve the problem and it was made clear in a joint discussion that Switchplus is organizationally, legally and financially separate from Switch. In the coming weeks, Switch will work with the Internet providers willing to discuss the matter to find satisfactory solutions.

Tages-Anzeiger in a new guise: New newspaper concept

The Tages-Anzeiger was published with its new layout for the first time on Tuesday. The newspaper now consists of four sections instead of six. Pictures and graphics are given significantly more space, while the blue color scheme remains largely unchanged.

The newspaper may appear more text-heavy at first glance, but it is clearer and more modern than before. The reduction to two fonts (previously: five) also contributes to this. The five-column structure has been retained. The main story of a page is no longer accompanied by a lead, but by a one- to two-line subtitle.
This is the first comprehensive redesign of the Tagi since 1997 and is intended to sharpen the content profile of the most widely read daily newspaper, the TA announced on Tuesday. It was created by Zurich designers Tom Menzi and Daniel Stähli.

4-Bund newspaper
The first bundle includes the topics Switzerland, Abroad, Background, Analysis and the previous flip side. The daily commentary is no longer on the front page, but has been moved to page 2. This gives the front page more design freedom, said Andreas Dietrich, who helped shape the redesign process, in an interview with the internet portal Newsnetz on Monday.
The second volume focuses on the Zurich region. Also integrated into the second bundle are the regional broadsheets. Previously, local reporting on the city of Zurich, the Zurich Oberland, the Zurich Unterland and the left and right-hand sides of Lake Zurich were placed at the back of the newspaper. Finally, the agenda pages, which draw attention to daily events, are at the very back.
The third section contains reports on culture, society and travel. The knowledge section and service topics can also be found here. The fourth section is divided between business and the stock market and sport. Sport is read from back to front.

Later closing times
According to TA, the new newspaper architecture allows for later closing times in regional reporting. With the alternating pages, regional topics could also be included in all newspaper bundles in future, according to the press release.
These elements will help to strengthen TA as "Switzerland's leading regional newspaper". In future, the TA - together with the Newsnetz and the commuter newspaper News - also wants to make even more targeted use of "the possibilities of a comprehensive media network". This also includes the gradual expansion of cooperation between the editorial offices.
It remains to be seen how the new layout will be received by readers. However, the TA also assumes that there will be complaints: On Tuesday, as a precaution, it published a full-page advertisement with the telephone number for complaints.
Another relaunch is scheduled for October 15 at Tamedia. Then appears The Covenant in a new look for the first time. According to Tamedia spokesman Christoph Zimmer, the layout of the traditional Bernese newspaper will basically be based on that of the Tagi. However, the Bund will continue to feature characteristic elements such as the color scheme.

Orange8: Baublatt gets an online portal

The construction magazine Baublatt is being supplemented with an internet platform to mark its 120th anniversary. This was developed and implemented by Goldbach media company Orange8 Interactive.

Baublatt, together with its French-language sister magazine Batimag, is the highest-circulation construction magazine in Switzerland. Now the publisher Docu Media Schweiz wants to dovetail print and online in a meaningful way and attract new readers. On Baublatt.ch users can now find the latest industry news and building applications. The website also features films, photo galleries, comments and polls that complement the print articles. Print and online are managed by the same editorial team. News and events as well as articles from the magazine are available online free of charge. However, additional information on the articles is reserved for subscribers. The French-language version will be available on Batimag.ch in October.
Orange8 Interactive delivered a basic concept for the Baublatt with input on marketing and commercialization options for online portals. The Biel agency team developed a flexible portal design based on the jointly developed structure.

Farner Consulting: Sponsoring management expanded

Christof P. Marti, previously Head of Global Sponsorship and Events at UBS, is moving to the agency side. Effective November 1, 2009, he will become Head of the Sponsorship and Events Division at Farner Consulting and, at the same time, a member of the full-service agency’s executive board.

After studying business administration, Christof Marti initially worked on research projects in the field of association management before joining Pro Sport & Leisure as a marketing planner and sponsorship project manager. In 1989, he moved to the former Union Bank of Switzerland - first as Team Leader Corporate Advertising and Sponsoring, later as Managing Director of the Global Sponsoring and Events department. Christof Marti also held a number of board and foundation mandates.
Farner Consulting is a communications agency specializing in public relations in Switzerland, with offices in Zurich, Bern, Basel, Lausanne and Geneva. SRG: Search for a new Director General opened

The SRG has begun the search for a new CEO. The primary focus is on finding a strong leader with expertise in business administration. Experience in television and multimedia is a secondary consideration.

The requirement profile is actually that of an "egg-laying woolly milk sow", said Chairman of the Board of Directors Jean-Bernard Münch to the media in Bern. In the knowledge that such organizations do not exist, Switzerland's largest electronic media company is looking for someone with management experience in a large company. He or she should also be a leader with a high level of sensitivity for the Swiss situation and a strong commitment to public service.
A high frustration potential is also recommended, explained Münch. The ideal age is between 45 and 55. Party affiliation and origin from a certain language region are irrelevant.

Head-hunter commissioned
After the last CEO from French-speaking Switzerland was Marcel Bezençon from 1950 to 1972, the Chairman of the Board of Directors can certainly imagine a French-speaking person again. According to Münch, the salary is in line with that of his predecessor Armin Walpen, i.e. around half a million francs a year plus fringe benefits. This is modest compared to the rest of the economy.
The position will be advertised in mid-October. In addition, targeted approaches will be made to potential candidates. SRG will be assisted in the search process by a head-hunter company. The deadline for applications is November 13.
The Nomination Committee, consisting of Münch, Viktor Baumeler, Jean-François Roth and Ulrich Gygi, will draw up a shortlist of five candidates in January 2010. Two candidates are to be presented to the Board of Directors in April, with the choice being made in May. The Assembly of Delegates then confirms them. Only the Board of Directors is the election body.

Superdirectors appointed later
A new Deputy Director General will only be appointed afterwards. According to Münch, the new Super Directors for the merged activities of the language regions will also only be appointed in collaboration with the new Director General.
SRG is looking for a new management team because Director General Armin Walpen is retiring at the end of 2010. Deputy Director General Daniel Eckmann is leaving the company at the end of January 2011. Walpen took up his post as 7th Director General in 1996 and, like his two direct predecessors, is close to the CVP.

SRG in the red
SRG, which is financed by licence fees, closed 2008 with a deficit of CHF 79 million. A deficit of CHF 57 million had been budgeted. The European Football Championships and the Olympic Games in Beijing had a negative impact, as did the decline in advertising revenue during the crisis. Münch said that the company was therefore not in need of restructuring.
SRG employs over 6,100 people in 4,800 full-time positions. Annual turnover amounts to around CHF 1.6 billion. The company has eight television channels, 18 radio stations as well as supplementary Internet offerings and teletext services.
A number of challenges await those who follow. With the media convergence project, the company will be merging television and radio from around mid-2010. There will then only be one company unit per language region.

Advertising-free consumer magazine launched

Starting in October, Switzerland’s selection of consumer magazines will grow by one. Happy & Smart aims to position itself as an ad-free, affordable, and «independent subscription magazine for every household.».

The magazine was launched by Nadine Stofer, author of the Shopping Guides. Stofer is the editor-in-chief of Happy & Smart. The monthly magazine contains only editorial contributions and is - apart from the product descriptions - free of advertising. When asked by Werbewoche, the publisher did not want to provide any further details about the new magazine.
