Direct marketing: Media Mail acquires Regor

The two lettershop companies, Media Mail and Regor, will be merged under the umbrella of Media Mail AG by the end of 2010. Regor, a subsidiary of Künzler Bachmann Directmarketing, will be acquired by Media Mail retroactively as of January 1, 2010; Regor’s location in Rorbas will be closed by the end of 2010.

The form and price are not disclosed. The merger will create one of the largest lettershop companies in Switzerland in Wallisellen. The larger volume will make the newly formed Media Mail more competitive and open up new market opportunities in a highly competitive market, according to a statement. The long-standing cooperation between Künzler Bachmann Directmarketing and Media Mail will be intensified. The basis for this is a corresponding cooperation agreement. In the future, Künzler Bachmann Directmarketing intends to focus more on data services and digital and laser printing, while Media Mail will concentrate on lettershop services.

Last but not least: When the vending machine spits flowers

Vending machines actually work quite simply: You put money in at the top, and a drink comes out at the bottom. But what if something completely different comes out instead of a drink?

This is what happened at a US college: Coca Cola installed a somewhat different Coke vending machine there, the so-called "Happiness Machine". And it really made the students happy: they were given more bottles than they had asked for, the drink was served in a glass with ice, or they were given pizzas, bunches of flowers, funny balloon animals and giant sandwiches. Although some would probably rather eat half a bottle of Coke instead of four and a salad instead of a pizza for the sake of their figure, the campaign already seems to have paid off for Coca-Cola: The video on YouTube has already been viewed 880,000 times. Viral marketing can be that simple.

Elvia boss Jürg Wittwer wants to become SRG boss

SRG Director General Armin Walpen will retire by the end of the year at the latest. Headhunter Martin E. Heuberger is currently compiling a shortlist of five qualified candidates to succeed him. Among the applicants is Elvia CEO Jürg Wittwer.

The 43-year-old CEO of Elvia is being supported by a 21-strong group led by SVP National Councillor Ulrich Giezendanner, whose aim is to fill Switzerland's most important media post with a manager with a civic mindset. Wittwer submitted his application himself a long time ago. He has worked as a journalist for many years and is familiar with the media world, Jürg Wittwer told Sonntag. He also has the necessary management experience.

Complaint Against «Kassensturz»: Political Advertising

The Swiss Insurance Association (SVV) accuses the SF program «Kassensturz» of political advertising and has filed a complaint with the Federal Office of Communications (Bakom). The SVV is calling on Swiss television to immediately terminate «Kassensturz’s» media partnership with the consumer magazine «K-Tipp.» The bone of contention is «K-Tipp’s» referendum campaign against the reduction of the BVG conversion rate.

The SVV announced on Sunday that it must be ensured that, in the future, there is no «unacceptable favoritism toward political actors» in Swiss television broadcasts and that political advertising is avoided. Specifically, the insurers took issue with a segment that aired on the January 12 broadcast. The insert showed the magazine’s cover page with the slogan «No to pension cuts,» and the commentary noted that «K-Tipp» is a partner magazine of the consumer affairs program. The special edition covering the March 7 referendum was distributed to mailboxes nationwide the following day.
According to the Radio and Television Act, television programs are prohibited from airing advertisements for issues that are the subject of referendums. It is not clear to viewers whether «Kassensturz» participated in the referendum special or to what extent it supports the campaign.
SF Director Ueli Haldimann resigned from the board of directors of Konsumenteninfo AG, the publisher of «K-Tipp,» back in mid-January.

SF: Giving non-Christians more of a voice with new program

Swiss television is currently working on a new programming concept. The goal is to provide a larger platform for non-Christian religions and denominations that are not represented on the program «Wort zum Sonntag.».

The idea stems from the existing program «Bilder zum Feiertag» (Images of the Holiday): 4-minute short reports, broadcast 6 to 8 times a year, provide insight into the festivals and rituals of non-Christian religions. Young believers from other religions serve as amateur reporters. Since late 2009, Raschida Bouhouch—a biologist with a Ph.D. from ETH Zurich and a Muslim of Swiss-Moroccan descent—has been appearing on camera as a live reporter. Now, a longer, separate format is to be developed that can be expanded with greater regularity, as Nathalie Wappler told the newspaper Sonntag. The new format is intended to place greater emphasis on integration and make it a central theme; it will be presented to the culture editor and the executive board at the end of February. In addition, a dedicated website will be launched in the coming weeks.

Internet Dispute Between China and the U.S. Escalates

The Internet dispute between China and the U.S. is escalating. A Chinese government spokesperson attacked U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Her allegations of cyberattacks have harmed bilateral relations. The U.S. should stop «using so-called Internet freedom to level unfounded accusations against China,» Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ma Zhaoxu said on Friday, according to SDA.
The day before, Clinton had threatened consequences should the communist state engage in cyberattacks. She accused China of blocking free access to the Internet. An editorial in the English-language Chinese newspaper Global Times referred to «information imperialism.» The U.S. demand for the free flow of information on the Internet is «a covert attempt to impose its values on other countries in the name of democracy.» The ministry spokesperson emphasized that China has its own circumstances and traditions. His country manages the Internet in accordance with its laws and policies, as is international practice, according to Ma Zhaoxu.
Face the consequences
In her speech, Clinton spoke out in favor of freedom of expression on the Internet and asked the Chinese government to provide a public explanation regarding the cyberattacks on Google and other U.S. companies. «States or individuals involved in cyberattacks must face the consequences and should be condemned internationally,» she said on Thursday.
According to Google, the attack on email accounts originated in China. Following the attacks, the search engine giant reviewed its China operations and decided it would no longer bow to the censorship imposed by Beijing—even if that meant it had to withdraw from China.
