Ringier sells two newspapers in Romania

Ringier sells two print products in Romania. The daily newspaper Evenimentul Zilei and the business weekly Capital are sold to Bobby Paunescu, the operator of the Bucharest local TV station B1.

The employees will be taken on by the new owner, Ringier wrote in a press release on Thursday. With the sale of the newspapers and the activities associated with the titles, Ringier Romania is streamlining its print portfolio. The online business is to be expanded, for example the digitization of the tabloid newspaper Libertatea and the women's magazine Unica.

Imprint files complaint against Keystone

Impressum files a complaint against Keystone with the Swiss Press Council. The media union alleges that the photo agency mixes advertising and press photos, thereby violating journalistic ethics.

According to SDA, the union is basing its complaint on an article that appeared in the Fribourg daily La Liberté on Tuesday. In it, the journalist complains that Keystone does not consistently identify images of sporting events with sponsor logos in the background as advertising images.
Keystone Managing Director Jann Jenatsch rejects this accusation. PR images are created by the Keystone subsidiary Photopress and are explicitly identified as such with the note "Photopress", he told SDA on Wednesday. If there was a risk that the PR interests of covering an event with only one photographer would prevail, Keystone would send a second photographer, Jenatsch continued.
If it is confirmed that advertising and the press are being mixed, this would mean that Impressum is in breach of Article 10 of the "Declaration of Duties and Rights of Journalists", as the union writes in the communiqué. This article stipulates the strict separation of journalistic and commercial content.

Y&R Group: TV commercial realized for Odeon pharmacy

The Y&R Group was commissioned to create a TV commercial for Odeon Pharmacy. The commercial, which aired during the holiday season, was intended to highlight that the pharmacy is open 365 days a year—even on Christmas.

An opening pop-up book is shown in a stop-motion production. You can see a man driving through the wintry book landscape with an open convertible roof, even in winter, i.e. in all weathers and even at Christmas. The Salvation Army sings in a choir, the Christmas tree is decorated and Santa Claus floats away above the car in his carriage pulled by reindeer. The only store that remains illuminated in the background the whole time is the Odeon pharmacy.
The 17-second TV spot was produced for use on regional TV stations, among others. According to the agency, the pop-up book was produced specifically for Odeon Apotheke in four weeks of precise manual work. A sequel is currently being worked on.

Ringier uses Google apps

From October, 8,000 Ringier employees worldwide will communicate via the Internet company Google.

Google Apps could replace eight different e-mail and calendar systems in ten countries, the Swiss media company announced on Thursday, according to SDA. The new platform will give all Ringier employees at all international locations access to standardized, web-based communication services, according to the press release. The aim of the changeover is to improve collaboration within and between the business units.
At Ringier, Google has prevailed over a Microsoft solution, explained Head of Technology Samuel Hügli. This could save the globally active media company around one million Swiss francs per year. Google Apps was tested for a year on 350 workstations in China and Vietnam. Hügli countered fears that using the services of the world's largest Internet company would jeopardize data security at Ringier: "We store the content encrypted on the network and communicate with encryption protection. Google guarantees 99.9 percent reliability for applications. This is significantly higher than the operational security achieved to date.

HD: Swiss Private Radio Association criticizes SRG

The Swiss Private Radio Association (VSP) finds it unacceptable that the SRG rejects HD technology and only promotes DAB and DAB+ as digital broadcasting technologies.

This was announced by the VSP on Thursday, according to SDA. In the opinion of the VSP, the SRG is pursuing a media policy that only serves its own interests and deviates from that of the federal government. Switzerland has opted for a dual system in order to give all radio stations - the public broadcasters and the larger and smaller private radio stations - access to digital broadcasting technologies. This provides for DAB+ for coverage of linguistic regions on the one hand and digital FM for smaller areas on the other.
In order not to exclude smaller radio stations from digital broadcasting technologies, the Uvek has already provided for the possibility of broadcasting a radio station's main program on analogue and digital FM in the newly allocated radio licences. Thanks to HD radio technology, this can be done on the same frequency, which saves marketing costs. It will also be possible to broadcast two additional digital channels. According to VSP, this makes digital broadcasting affordable even for smaller radios.
Radio Argovia (AG), Radio Basel (BS), Capital FM (BE), Radio 24 (ZH) and Radio Sunshine (ZG) announced on Tuesday that they expect to launch HD radio on September 1. The corresponding applications have been submitted to the Federal Office of Communications (Bakom). The SRG was disconcerted by this. The additional technology creates confusion among consumers, which ultimately weakens the medium of radio as a whole. In addition, no devices are available in Europe.
According to VSP, the necessary receivers do not pose any problems, as there has long been a consensus in the device industry that modern receivers must be multi-standard compatible.

Adolf Grimme Award: Swiss co-production nominated

The SF film «Flight into the Night: The Überlingen Disaster» has been nominated for the Adolf Grimme Prize.

For the first time, a Swiss television film has been nominated for an award by the renowned institute in Germany, as Schweizer Fernsehen writes in a press release. The co-production by SF and Südwestrundfunk (SWR) deals with the events and consequences of July 1, 2002, when 71 people died in a collision between a cargo plane and a passenger plane over Lake Constance.
At the beginning of February, three commissions initially selected ten entries from private broadcasters and 42 from public broadcasters for the television award from the viewer suggestions. The Grimme Award winners will be announced on March 10. The gala and award ceremony will take place on March 26 at the Marl City Theater.

Authorities should continue to be able to publish free of charge

The Bernese cantonal government is sticking to its decision: the federal government, canton and regional churches should continue to be allowed to publish official publications in the gazettes free of charge. In doing so, it is contradicting the proposal of the committee advising the Grand Council.

The Government Council of the Canton of Bern has now approved the partial revision of the municipal law for the second reading by the Grand Council, as reported by SDA on Thursday. Certain passages on official gazettes were already controversial at the first reading in the January session. For example, the government wanted to allow the local authority gazettes to publish editorial articles in future. However, a majority in the cantonal parliament was against this.
The cantonal government has now relented. It agrees with the Commission's opinion that opinion-forming articles should remain prohibited in the advertisements, the Government Council announced on Thursday. The editorial content should therefore be intended for loose inserts enclosed with the advertisements.
The Grand Council is expected to deal with the bill at second reading in the March session.

Set-top box manufacturer ADB increases sales and profits

The set-top box manufacturer Advanced Digital Broadcast (ADB) is doing well thanks to the growing popularity of digital television. In 2009, the Geneva-based company's revenue grew by 5.6 percent to $380.1 million.

The bottom line was a net profit of 15.25 million dollars. This is 31.6 percent more than in the previous year, as ADB announced on Thursday according to SDA. Net profit from continuing operations climbed from 14.9 million to 23.1 million dollars. However, the Group had to cut back on gross profit. This fell from 144.3 to 139.0 million dollars. The gross margin fell accordingly from 40.0 to 36.5 percent.
In the reporting year, shares worth 22.3 million dollars were bought back as part of the current buy-back program. ADB expects sales to grow by over 10 percent in 2010. Profitability is expected to remain at an "acceptable level".
