Pulitzer Prize: Online publication honored for the first time

This year, the Pulitzer Prize went to an online publication for the first time: the news organization Pro Publica was honored for investigative journalism. The Washington Post won a total of four prizes. The New York Times received three.

The article, which received the award for investigative journalism, was written by Sheri Fink about the work in a New Orleans hospital after Hurricane Katrina. It was published in collaboration with The New York Times Magazine.
With four awards, the Washington Post received the most honors this year. It came out on top with its international reporting, features, commentaries and reviews. The New York Times, which won five awards in 2009, had to settle for three. The sensational National Enquirer came away empty-handed. It had entered the race with revelatory stories about an affair involving presidential candidate John Edwards.
The highest Pulitzer Prize for outstanding "public service" was awarded to The Herald Courier of Bristol newspaper in the US state of Virginia. It had uncovered shenanigans involving royalties for gas deposits on private land.

Last but not least: Hiding the lover in the closet

Looking for a new wardrobe but have no idea how big it should be? Maxomedia and IKEA have now developed the perfect Funtool for you.

A fun tool is now available on the Swedish furniture store's website that allows visitors to playfully calculate the size of their future wardrobe. The tool differentiates between male and female space requirements - after all, men and women don't have the same things to store: In addition to the usual items of clothing, men can test how much space they need for their TV, fishing rod, sports equipment and trophies. She, on the other hand, can specify how many soft toys should be stored in the wardrobe. Particularly practical: the woman can also use the opportunity to test how much space she needs to hide her lover.

This is what the men's wardrobe looks like:

The Swiss sports television network SSF and Panini are entering into a partnership in the area of TV sponsorship. The manufacturer of soccer sticker albums will serve as the presenting sponsor for the network’s coverage of the World Cup.

The starting signal is given on Thursday - one day before the publication of the new World Cup collector's booklet. In the "Destination South Africa" series, the participating teams will be presented in the run-up to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. According to Ezio Bassi, Managing Director of Panini Switzerland, the series offers an excellent platform for presenting the booklet to a target group with an affinity for sport. In the magazine show "Sportwoche", booklets and pictures will also be raffled off, as Philip Michel, Head of Program Planning at SSF, told Werbewoche. Further campaigns are also planned, for example for the football talk show "Kick it!".

Ringier: Company remains family-owned

Ringier remains a family-owned company. Publisher Michael Ringier will bring his nephew, Robin Lingg, onto the board of directors next year.

"We want to move into the next generation," said Michael Ringier in an interview with the Sonntagszeitung. "That's why my sister's son will be joining the Board of Directors next year." It is conceivable that Robin Lingg, who is currently working for a pharmaceutical company in Mexico, will one day succeed him as a shareholder - but not as CEO. BAG: Mandate advertised

The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) has issued a call for proposals for the project «Public Information on the Transplantation and Donation of Organs, Tissues, and Cells 2011–14.» The agency is seeking a firm with experience in both the development and distribution of informational materials and in cross-media strategies and implementation.

The Transplantation Act obliges the federal government to regularly inform the public about transplantation medicine and the donation of organs, tissues and cells. In order to perform this task effectively and efficiently, the FOPH is now looking for an agency. The focus will be on providing information; there are no plans to promote donations. Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on May 14, 2010.

FM1: Broadcasting area expanded

Effective immediately, the Eastern Swiss radio station FM1 can now be received in the Rapperswil-Jona region as well. This fulfills the mandate set forth in the 2008 license renewal to provide coverage throughout the entire canton of St. Gallen.

The program has been broadcast from the Feusisberg-Strickli transmitter site for a few days now. A transmitter is also being planned in Oberurnen, which will improve reception between Rapperswil-Jona and Lake Walen. However, its realization still depends on the approval of the relevant authorities.

Arbitration board assesses theft of ideas from TV formats

If two television stations or producers are in dispute over an idea, they can now appeal to a mediation body. The Arbitration and Mediation Body for Idea Theft will be based at WIPO, the World Intellectual Property Organization, in Geneva.

This was agreed between Wipo and the international format protection organization Frapa, to which more than 100 production companies belong. Not only the theft of ideas, but also increasingly complex contractual models require the intervention of neutral arbitrators more and more frequently, said Frapa President Ute Biernat. As an example, the German cited the dispute between the production company Fremantle and the Swiss broadcaster 3+ over the series "Bauer ledig sucht". Fremantle accuses the private broadcaster of having copied the RTL ratings hit "Bauer sucht Frau". For its part, broadcaster 3+ refers to the fact that Swiss television station SF had already previously had a similar format in its program, which Fremantle had in turn used.

Advertising agency: New online presence for Zurich Flower Exchange

Werbeanstalt Schweiz has completely redesigned the website for the Zurich Flower Exchange. This is based on the defined communication presence.

The website shows a bird's eye view of the 25,000 square meter building complex in Wangen near Dübendorf. As sales are aimed exclusively at the specialist trade, this "barrier" was also implemented on the website: The flower shelves inside the Zurich Flower Exchange can only be seen by logged-in members in the password-protected specialist area.

Responsible at the Zurich Flower Exchange: Beat Thomann (Managing Director). Responsible at Werbeanstalt Schweiz: Sarah Hiltebrand (CD), Mike Krüll (text/concept), Roland Buob (AD), Oli Bergmann, Daniela Steffen (consulting). Programming: Department.
