Press freedom increasingly restricted for years

According to the U.S. organization Freedom House, the work of journalists has become more difficult every year over the past eight years. The situation is particularly precarious in Iran, Russia, Italy, and South Africa. In contrast, progress has been made in Asia—except in China.

In the past year, the work of journalists has been significantly hampered, particularly in Iran, in the wake of the protests following the controversial presidential election. Russia remains "one of the most restricted and dangerous media environments in the world", according to a survey published on Thursday by the US organization Freedom House. In Western Europe, there was criticism of Italy, where the government was criticized for having too much influence on the media.
Overall, Freedom House registered an increased obstruction of the media in 2009, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa region, in sub-Saharan Africa and in Latin America. In the Middle East and North Africa region, only Israel was certified as having a free media landscape. In contrast, there has been progress in the Asia-Pacific region, with improvements in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Indonesia, for example. Not in China, however. At the top of the list of countries with the least free press in 2009 are Iran, Belarus, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Libya, Burma, North Korea, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Imprint: Negotiations with Agefi concluded

In early March, the Geneva-based financial newspaper Agefi announced restructuring measures that would result in layoffs. Through negotiations between the Impressum union, the staff committee, and Agefi management, the number of layoffs was reduced from eight to five. A severance plan was also negotiated.

As part of the consultation procedure prescribed by the collective labor agreement "CCT" and the "Declaration of Duties and Rights of Journalists", Impressum and the Agefi Personnel Commission (PeKo) negotiated with the management on alternative measures to avoid redundancies and the social plan. At the request of the union and the PeKo, the management submitted an application for short-time working, but this was not accepted by the cantonal authorities. Further negotiations were concluded last week. The negotiated social plan provides for severance pay of between two and a half and seven months, as well as other benefits. In view of the circumstances, it can be considered decent, Impressum wrote in a press release on Thursday.
After the job cuts, the editorial team will still consist of 14 journalists. "There are still enough of us, but we won't be able to do the same work as before," editor-in-chief François Schaller told the news agency SDA. Despite the crisis, according to Schaller, there is no scenario that envisages collaboration with another newspaper. However, it is now necessary to find even more external financing options.

Polyconsult: Visual aids for Bern's litter offenders

The city of Bern has declared war on litter on the streets. Polyconsult is helping with this effort and has marked the 100 most central trash cans with yellow warning signs for a week.

The reason: the most common excuse for littering is still that there was no litter garbage can nearby. The markings should help visually impaired litterers to dispose of their waste correctly. And also show everyone else how many litter garbage cans are available to them in the city center.

Responsible at the Directorate of Civil Engineering, Transport and Urban Greenery: Regula Rytz (Director), Stefan Schwarz (General Secretary). Responsible at Polyconsult: René Maeder and Jasmin Stadelmann (consulting), Silvio Truffer and Roger Ghezzi (head of creation), Peer Fankhauser (graphics).

Publisuisse Mediavision 2010: The pictures of the event

More than 400 visitors attended Publisuisse Mediavision 2010 last Tuesday. This year’s information event focused on the theme «innovative.creative.effective.».

In a presentation, Kjell Nordström described the benefits of capitalism. Capitalism itself, Nordström said, is not responsible for the crisis. It only separates the efficient from the non-efficient companies. In a short intermezzo, Roman Tschäppeler and Mikael Krogerus explained the world to the audience in three strokes. Martin Schneider, Director of Publisuisse, gave a presentation on the efficiency of TV advertising and sponsorship. TV advertising as well as TV sponsoring, Schneider concluded, help to build a brand and have a positive effect on the brand image even after several years. Former RTL CEO Helmut Thoma ventured a look into the future: It will bring nothing to be afraid of. Because even in the digital age, viewers remain people. And people do not change. The afternoon was hosted by Cornelia Boesch, anchorwoman of the SF "Tagesschau.

Draftfcb/Lowe: Partner advertisements placed for Daihatsu

The Draftfcb/Lowe Group agency has created a new comprehensive brand identity for Ascar, the Swiss importer of Daihatsu. The campaign focuses on the car brand’s emotional appeal: Under the slogan «Daihatsu, single, looking for... ,» the compact Japanese cars are on the lookout for a partner for life. In collaboration with Future Connection, a website featuring an «online partner test» was also launched.

Each of the five models advertises with its own personality profile: the adventurous Terios, the family-friendly Sirion, the economical Cuore, the generous Materia and the sexy-trendy Copen. The aim is to differentiate the Daihatsu models in a recognizable way and give them an appealing face.
An integral part of the communication concept is the website developed by Draftfcb/Lowe Group together with Future Connection. "What type of Daihatsu are you?" is the message on Daihatsu.ch. Anyone who enters their individual preferences such as fashion style, favorite music or vacation dreams in the personality test will find out which Daihatsu model suits him or her best. And anyone who sends a text message with their favorite model will immediately receive the address of the nearest Daihatsu dealer.
The advertisements appear in national and regional newspapers and magazines throughout Switzerland. With a circulation of 1.9 million copies, the "Kompakt" magazine was distributed at the Geneva Motor Show and distributed as a supplement in national and regional newspapers. Throughout the year, additional partner search campaigns were carried out at dealerships. Online banners with a link to the online partner test were placed. In addition, sponsorship of the television program "Bauer, ledig, sucht... " on 3+ is ongoing.

Responsible at Ascar: Roland Hüsser (CEO), Simon Widmer (Marketing). Responsible at Draftfcb/Lowe Group: Daniel Comte (Creative Director), Roy Spring (Concept/Text), Frédéric Nogier (Art Direction), Reto Saluz (Production), Christoph Bögli and Martin Rubli (Consulting), Catherine Purgly (Strategy), Daniel Tschanz and Robert Massé (Future Connection), Cornelia Harder (Overall responsibility).
