Microsoft: Plans for iPad competition halted

Microsoft has halted its plans for a tablet computer to compete with Apple's new iPad product.

The small computer "Courier" will not be launched on the market for the time being, at least not in its current form, the US software giant announced on Thursday according to SDA. Microsoft is constantly working on new ideas, wrote Microsoft's Head of Communications Frank Shaw in his blog on the company's website. The "Courier" is one example of this. The company is examining how the technology could be used in future Microsoft offerings.
The technology community had originally expected Microsoft to unveil the tablet at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Instead, CEO Steve Ballmer promoted a model from Hewlett-Packard.

Alcohol advertising: Federal Court confirms advertising ban on unit price

Bars and clubs are not allowed to advertise that they will sell drinks at a low flat rate on certain evenings. According to the Federal Administrative Court, advertisements of this kind violate the ban on advertising discounted spirits.

This was reported by the SDA on Friday. A St. Gallen club regularly organizes the so-called "Schnägge-Fritig". The club advertised the events on posters, the club website and on the radio, stating that "almost all drinks" were available for five francs on Fridays. The Federal Alcohol Board banned the club from advertising in this way last October. The officials in Bern came to the conclusion that the advertising violated the ban on advertising distilled water at discounted prices.
The Federal Administrative Court has now confirmed this decision and dismissed the club's appeal. According to the ruling, it is initially clear that, according to the consumer's understanding, the offer also refers to spirits, even if it only refers to "almost all drinks". It is also irrelevant that not all spirits and alcopops were actually served at five francs. Furthermore, the addressee of the advertising must inevitably assume that the low unit price is a discount. It was not decisive whether the club actually kept the promise and sold the spirits below the normal or even the cost price. Advertising of this kind also encourages the consumption of alcohol if the customer is only led to believe that the discount exists.

SRG: Audience Council gives "Echo der Zeit" and "Rundschau" good marks

For the Audience Council, SR DRS's "Echo der Zeit" is a journalistically outstanding information program. It provides factual, competent and in-depth information on the most relevant topics of the day. The Council attests to the high journalistic quality of Swiss television's news magazine "Rundschau".

The "Echo der Zeit" enjoys a high level of credibility because it takes up the current and relevant topics of the day and presents them in a factual and competent manner. It also reports from different perspectives. The Audience Council sees the in-depth information in the individual contributions as a strength. Sustainability is also achieved by the fact that individual topics are dealt with in several articles. According to the Audience Council, the dossiers are a particularly impressive editorial achievement, which also take up and delve into topics outside the daily news. According to the Audience Council, the focus of the program is on politics and economics. A majority of the Council would like to see a greater variety of topics. For example, more topics from the areas of culture, society, education, science and occasionally sport should be covered.
The Audience Council judged the presenter to be focused, articulate and committed. It also succeeds in conveying the background to an event in an understandable and concise manner. The Council members consider the presenters' discussions with correspondents, their own specialists and experts to be strengths of the program.
The Audience Council believes that the comprehensibility of the program is very high, especially for experienced listeners. However, some contributions sometimes require a considerable amount of prior knowledge, which is a barrier to entry for occasional listeners. The Council members appreciate the fact that the program can be listened to online or downloaded as a podcast. They would also like further information as well as links and references.
Indispensable news magazine
The "Rundschau" is an indispensable news magazine for the Audience Council and occupies an important position in the information offered by Swiss television. The magazine offers a current and varied mix of topics. A majority of the Council believes that the focus is on politics and business. Some in the Council welcome the fact that, in addition to topical issues, the magazine also addresses non-topical social issues. For many Council members, the "Rundschau" is particularly useful when it chooses new topics that have not already been covered in other media throughout the week. The Audience Council therefore recommends that more of its own topics be covered.
The Council members particularly like the different perspective that the "Rundschau" takes on current issues. This also provides viewers with surprising insights. The fact that at least one report on a foreign topic is broadcast in every program meets with broad approval. A number of Council members would like to see a greater focus on foreign issues in the "Rundschau".
A majority of the Council sees the "hot seat" as an enriching element that brings variety to the broadcasting structure. It is the trademark of the "Rundschau". The Council members are not entirely in agreement about the knowledge gained from this element. Some find it interesting and informative how the respective studio guest responds to the critical questions. For others, the "hot seat" mainly serves to loosen things up. A majority of the Council appreciates that the interviews are conducted persistently but with visible respect for the interviewee. However, the interviewees are sometimes interrupted too much.
Ongoing editorial support desired for the discussion forum
The moderation was also rated as good. Both moderators have a high level of expertise and are well prepared. In addition, the comprehensibility of both is high. The "Rundschau" website received a positive rating. The podcast options, the search function and the link to "SF Wissen" were well received. The public council would like to see constant editorial support for the discussion forum. It expects the SF quality criteria to be consistently applied here too.

Last but not least: grab the "little Frenchman"

No one is immune to the car rental company Sixt’s cheeky ads. After Angela Merkel, Nicolas Sarkozy is now feeling the effects as well. In Angi’s case, it was her hairstyle that the car rental company wanted to spice up a bit with a convertible ride. In the case of the French president, Sixt is alluding to the considerable height difference between him and his wife, Carla.

"Do it like Madame Bruni. Take a little French car. A Citroën C3, for example," says the car rental company in an advertisement. The ex-top model is ten centimeters taller than her husband. Daring, because two years ago the low-cost airline Ryanair had to pay 60,000 euros for advertising with a picture of the French president and his then new girlfriend Carla without permission. Will Sarkozy - aka "the little Frenchman" - show more humor this time?

ProSiebenSat.1 back in the black

ProSiebenSat.1's business is performing better again thanks to a surge in advertising revenue. The TV group returned to profitability in the first quarter with a net profit of 21.2 million euros.

A year ago, there had still been a deficit of EUR 1.7 million. Revenues at the ProSieben, Sat.1, Kabel Eins and N24 stations rose seven percent to EUR 416.7 million. Group revenues increased by five percent to 658.4 million euros. Like industry leader RTL Group, the Group struggled last year with the biggest slump in TV advertising revenues in the history of commercial television. The broadcasting group countered this with tough savings and massive staff cuts.

JvM/Limmat: Fresh campaign for Migros Bio

Migros recently launched a new organic label with new packaging and a new look. Jung von Matt/Limmat created a campaign for it.

Under the motto "Nature knows what's good", a film and print motifs were created in which Migros' organic products receive the unreserved appreciation of nature. In the film, a woman cycles through a village and through nature with her organic shopping. Someone is always whistling after her. Or so she thinks, but in fact there is a much more natural cause behind the whistles. The film was directed by Vikings, who were also responsible for directing the Migros commercials "Chocolate", "Kartoffelnasen" and "Farm der Tiere". The film can now be seen throughout Switzerland in cinemas and on TV as well as on the Internet. The print campaign with motifs created in the Garrigosa studios in Barcelona will appear in the relevant print titles throughout Switzerland.
