News Corp wants to swallow British television group Sky

Murdochs Medienkonzern News Corporation will den britischen Tochtersender British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) vollständig übernehmen.

News Corp already holds 39 percent of the television group and now wants to acquire the remaining 61 percent. The price of 700 pence per share represents a 17 percent premium on Monday's closing price. The US media group originally offered 675 pence per share and increased its offer to 700 pence following talks with BSkyB. It was agreed to work together to facilitate a transaction, News Corp said. According to BSkyB, the offer does not reflect the value of the company. It is prepared to accept an offer if it exceeds a value of 800 pence per share.
According to the information provided, it was also agreed that News Corp would refrain from a hostile takeover, for example by purchasing BSkyB shares. This is to apply until two months after the regulatory authorities give their OK or until the end of 2011 at the latest. A complete takeover of the most important British subscription TV group would be one of the largest acquisitions in the history of the Murdoch Group.

European Court: Berlusconi favored Mediaset Group

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's Mediaset group must repay millions in state aid. This was decided by the European Court of Justice on Tuesday. According to the judges, the Italian government unilaterally favoured the Mediaset Group, which specializes in digital terrestrial television, and disadvantaged satellite providers during the switchover to digital television in 2004.

Under the Berlusconi government, the Italian state paid consumers a subsidy of 150 euros for the purchase of digital TV decoders, which are necessary to receive digital television. According to the Italian media, the Berlusconi family even controls the production and distribution of such decoders through their companies. The television provider, together with other TV broadcasters and cable operators, must now repay millions in state aid. An upper limit of 110 million euros has been set for the expenditure.
With their ruling, the judges confirmed a decision by the EU Commission. The competition authorities had already rejected the aid as unlawful in 2007 following complaints from satellite broadcasters. The Mediaset Group, which owns Canale 5, Italia 1, Rete 4 and six pay-TV channels, had taken legal action against this in Luxembourg. An Italian court must now decide on the amount of the repayment.

VW: Advertising exclusively on the social web

Volkswagen is completely foregoing traditional advertising for the launch of its Polo GTI sports compact car. Instead, the automaker is relying entirely on Facebook.

There is not even a microsite for the new VW model on the Volkswagen portal. The link "Experience on Facebook" leads directly from the VW homepage to the social web, where there are videos on the subject of acceleration in an English-language Polo GTI section within the VW fan page. According to Volkswagen, these are intended to "convey the joy of speed without encouraging people to drive too fast on the road". The motto of the social web campaign is "Fast Lane - Driven by Fun". The current campaign was created by Tribal DDB.
