Press Council: Undercover research by "K-Tipp" journalist defended

Journalists are allowed to conduct undercover research if there is sufficient public interest in the reporting. This is the conclusion reached by the Press Council in the case of a "K-Tipp" journalist who attended two information events for controversial personality courses.

In November 2009, the journalist took part in two information evenings at the "Business Academy". Although she did this under her real name, she did not disclose her profession. She then published an article in the consumer magazine "K-Tipp" entitled "Das Business mit den Träumen" (The business with dreams) about the company's business practices. The article stated that the company was selling personality courses for CHF 6,800 under a different name, namely "Corporation Unlimited". The company lured interested parties with the promise that they could earn up to 8,000 francs a month with little effort by referring new customers.
The Press Council has now rejected a complaint by the "Business Academy" against the journalist's undercover approach. "Undercover research is permissible in exceptional cases if there is an overriding public interest in the information researched and if this information cannot be obtained in any other way," the Press Council wrote in a press release on Tuesday.
In this case, both conditions were met. As the "Business Academy" has been litigating against the "K-Tipp" for some time, the journalist would probably have been thrown out of the room immediately if the investigation had been open or the event would have taken a different course, argues the Press Council. It also rates the information value of the investigation as high: Warning the public about the dubious, legally controversial business model of the company based in the Caribbean is important. There is a large gap between the company's self-portrayal and the external portrayal of various consumer protection media.

Last but not least: RTL II without "Big Brother"?

«Big Brother» fans are in for a rough time. Just because RTL II wants to offer higher-quality content in the future, the hit show is set to be canceled. That's some big news!

RTL II sold its new concept as a "quality offensive" in August. The channel was actually successful with docusoaps such as "Frauentausch" and the "Big Brother" show. The makers thought they could deliver even more embarrassment and launched three formats of this type this fall: "Abenteuer Afrika Deutsche Teenies beissen sich durch", "Das Tier in mir" and "Tattoo Attack Promis stchen zu". Presumably a bit too much, as the formats didn't really catch on with the audience. The answer is now more quality, and "Big Brother" obviously no longer fits the bill. According to the industry service Kontakter, the start date has been postponed indefinitely. But there is reason for hope: voyeurism and embarrassment will still be available on RTL II thanks to existing and newly launched programs. From now on, it will simply be of a slightly higher quality. The channel's distinguishing feature will therefore remain largely unchanged.

On the Daihatsu Youtube Channel Youtube.com/daihatsudating the films "Partner Dating" will be shown. In three interactive viral spots, the main actors Zoe, Marc and Natalia can be seen presenting themselves to the audience in a partner dating situation. They sit opposite the camera and ask the viewer more or less indiscreet questions. These are intended to clarify whether the unknown counterpart is the perfect partner or not. After each sequence, there is a choice of "yes" or "no" answers, each of which leads to the next sequence. "Say yes to your new partner" is the final message; this refers to the two 4×4 special models Terios and Sirion "4seasons". The films are also available on Mydaihatsu.ch where the special models are also presented. Daihatsu is also present with Internet banners on various news portals. The chat dating questions appear there as a pop-up dialog in the middle of the screen.

Last but not least: With Tipp-Ex against lewd websites

News from the Valais education sector. For once, the issue isn't about crucifixes, but rather a book that leads students to inappropriate websites. The response from Valais: Prevent the discovery of these links by using Tipp-Ex.

According to Blick, CVP State Councillor Claude Roch has instructed secondary school teachers in Valais to eliminate the links mentioned in the "Schritte ins Leben" teaching aid "using Tipp-Ex or other solid adhesive materials". Sites such as Feelok.ch, Tschau.ch, Lilli.ch and Mysize.ch are a thorn in his side. Sites that educate young people about sex but are probably less prudish than State Councillor Roch and the right-wing citizens' initiative IG Sorgfalt, which incidentally tracked down the links, would like.
Ironically, the very attempt to conceal the links is likely to make pupils even more aware of the websites. What's more, the whole spectacle is completely pointless these days. If the young people are really interested in the websites, they are likely to use Google to jump to the publisher's website or the Blick article, where the links are available. And it's even more likely, which IG Sorgfalt probably didn't expect, that they will come across other, even "worse", "related" websites via Google. And you can't do anything about that with Tipp-Ex.
