BSW: Agency ranking 2010 published

BSW Leading Swiss Agencies, the association of Switzerland’s leading advertising and communications agencies, has published its annual agency ranking. There have been only minor changes at the top of the advertising agency ranking. Publicis continues to lead the list, followed by Saatchi & Saatchi in second place. Jung von Matt/Limmat was knocked off the podium by Spillmann Felser Leo Burnett and now ranks fourth.

The ranking of BSW agencies, in which all but a few of the association's members took part, is based on gross operating income (GOP) for 2009. Overall, the members of the largest advertising agency association recorded an 8.1% drop in income in 2009 compared to 2008, while the top 10 agencies recorded a 5.8% drop. By way of comparison, total advertising expenditure in Switzerland fell by 11.4% in 2009 compared to 2008 (source: Swiss Advertising Statistics Foundation).

Ranking advertising and specialty agencies
The 54 advertising and specialty agencies in the BSW 2009 generated a total of around CHF 307 million in gross operating income (GOP), 8% less than the 2008 figure of CHF 334 million. In 2009, they were responsible for advertising money amounting to around CHF 2 billion for their clients. This corresponds to around 2/3 of all advertising investments made via agencies in Switzerland.

Sales growth expected for 2010
However, BSW agencies are optimistic about the future. Based on a survey conducted in October, the association assumes that the majority of BSW agencies will close the 2010 financial year with significant revenue growth. At the end of 2009, the majority of agency bosses were still forecasting stagnation or even another slight decline in income for 2010. Around two thirds of advertising and specialist agencies expect fee income to increase by an average of 7.2% compared to 2009. Media agencies are expecting an increase of 9 percent.
The BSW agencies expect further growth in 2011. A majority of advertising agency bosses expect a 10 percent better result than in 2010 (all participating agencies: + 5.7 percent), while the expectation among media agencies is 6.6 percent.

Klartext: Media magazine examines cooperation with Edito

The media magazine Klartext is holding talks with potential partners regarding organizational or editorial collaboration. These include the Swiss Creative Industries Association, founded in 2009, which is already contributing to the December issue of Klartext, and, in particular, the rival publication Edito, with which the magazine is exploring a merger.

The media magazine Klartext goes back to Comedia's predecessor organization, the Swiss Journalists' Union (SJU). This organization launched the Klartext Foundation 30 years ago and has provided it with significant support ever since. Negotiations are now apparently underway regarding a partnership with the publishing association of rival magazine Edito, which in turn includes the Swiss Syndicate of Media Professionals (SSM) and Impressum. The Klartext Foundation Board is currently in talks with the Edito publishers' association regarding a possible joint venture project, according to a press release issued on Tuesday.
The foundation and the association would publish a joint media magazine as equal partners. The magazine will be launched in spring 2011 at the earliest. A delegation from the Foundation Board is holding talks with a delegation from the association after consulting with its founder, the media trade union Comedia, according to the statement. The project, which is currently being developed, will be submitted to the supporting members of the association, SSM and Impressum, in the near future.

Not much has changed at the top of the agency rankings. Publicis remains in first place, with Saatchi & Saatchi in second place as before. Jung von Matt/Limmat was knocked off the podium by Spillmann Felser Leo Burnett and is now in fourth place.

Times/Sunday Times: 105,000 pay for web offer

Four months after the introduction of the paid-for web service, the British newspapers Times and Sunday Times have taken stock. There are now 105,000 paying customers, they say.

On Tuesday, News International, the British subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch's media group News Corporation, which also owns the British papers, said that around 100,000 people had subscribed to the print and online editions together. In an interview with the British television station BBC, Times editor-in-chief James Harding called the figures extremely encouraging. Online access to the Times costs one pound per day, the digital weekly subscription is two pounds. Since the introduction of the paid-for web service, the total number of Times online and newspaper readers has increased, said James Murdoch, who heads News Corporation's European and Asian business.
Most newspapers continue to make their content available free of charge. Exceptions in the international newspaper industry are the Wall Street Journal, which is also owned by Murdoch, and the Financial Times of the international media group Pearson.

The first module can also be completed in Basel and Lucerne. Text professionals Paul Girard of Girardtext and Stefan Meier, alias Direktmeier, have been engaged to head the examination board.

Radio Freiburg: Dismissed staff representatives file suit

Two journalists who were dismissed from Radio Fribourg last February have filed a lawsuit against their former employer. They are claiming abusive dismissals.

The media union Comedia and the professional association Impressum made the lawsuit public on Tuesday and announced that they supported the two media professionals. Once again, it has been shown that shop stewards and staff representatives in Switzerland must be better protected against abusive dismissals. According to the two professional associations, the two journalists, as part of a staff delegation, wanted to convey the editorial team's point of view to the Board of Directors. At the center of this was a conflict over structures in local radio. As a result, the Board of Directors dismissed the two due to a mutual loss of trust.

Good start for the smartphone from Microsoft

The Windows Phone 7 has been available in Switzerland since late October and appears to be in high demand. Although sales lag behind those of Apple's iPhone, sales of the Microsoft smartphone are significantly higher than those of Android smartphones at their launch.

The launch of Windows Phone 7 was very positive, a Swisscom spokesperson told the business newspaper Cash, which had made enquiries with various retailers. The modern user interface and ease of use were convincing. Consumers also wanted something "fresh". No retailer wanted to comment on the figures. However, they did suggest that sales were above expectations. How well the Apple rival product is really received in Switzerland should now become clear in the Christmas sales.
