TV channel Al-Jazeera banned
Moroccan authorities have banned the Arab television network Al Jazeera from conducting any activities in the country and have revoked its correspondents' press credentials.
The Ministry of Communications declared on Friday in Rabat that the broadcaster had repeatedly violated the journalistic rules of seriousness, accuracy and objectivity. Al-Jazeera had damaged Morocco's image and the interests of the North African kingdom with its irresponsible reports. The Moroccan government had repeatedly complained about the critical reporting of the Qatar-based satellite broadcaster. Two years ago, for example, Al-Jazeera had to discontinue a news program about the Maghreb states that was broadcast from Rabat.
A few weeks ago, the broadcaster protested against the Moroccan authorities' refusal to issue accreditation to two of its reporters. Among other things, Al-Jazeera has reported on social grievances in the country and the conflict in the Moroccan-occupied Western Sahara.
