EU: Antitrust investigation against Google

The European Union has launched a formal antitrust investigation into Google's online search service. As the European Commission announced on Tuesday, it is examining whether the search engine operator has abused its dominant market position.

The reason for this are complaints from other online search services that they are at a disadvantage in both paid and unpaid search results. The EU competition authorities are also investigating allegations that Google has abused its dominant market position. For example, the US company may have forced its partners to place certain competing advertisements on their own sites in advertising contracts. At the same time, the Commission emphasized that it has not yet been able to prove any illegal activity. Google had rejected the allegations made by competitors.

Last but not least: Orangina's penchant for self-irony

Orangina's new TV commercial is once again full of animal antics. Whether it's a giraffe, a chameleon, a bear, or a big cat—they're all crazy about Orangina and praise the sweet drink as a jack-of-all-trades.

The commercial shows that the range of uses for Orangina is limitless. It is just as suitable as a detergent or cleaning agent as it is for fighting pimples or underarm perspiration. The animal protagonists add a special touch to the commercial. Somehow funny, but sometimes also a little scary. (For example, the car wash scene towards the end of the commercial.) You don't know exactly whether you should look or not. Quite bizarre.

KSB goes out with the VW

Krieg Schlupp Bürge (KSB) has created a series of ads for Volkswagen. These are appearing in the restaurant guide «Basel geht aus.».

The advertisements are intended to show that Volkswagen's vehicle range is just as diverse as the range of restaurants in Basel: there is something to suit every taste. The small Polo for an evening at the Italian restaurant, the Golf GTI for a visit to the Chinese restaurant or the elegant Phaeton for French cuisine. An advertisement also warns against overdoing it: After all, nobody wants to drive home in the very special VW, the police car.

Baspo: Massive growth in sports advertising volume

The sports advertising market has grown rapidly in recent years. In 2009, approximately 109 million francs were invested across various media formats. This is according to a study by the socio-economic research firm Rütter + Partner, which was conducted on behalf of the Federal Office of Sport (Baspo).

At CHF 109 million, sports advertising accounted for 2.7% of the total advertising volume in Switzerland in 2009 (around CHF 4 billion). Most of this was spent in the print media (64%). Electronic media accounted for 21% and posters for 15%. The largest categories in the sports advertising market are sporting events (CHF 40.3 million) and sports tourism/sports facilities (CHF 30.5 million). As the most important advertising outlet, sporting events use the daily, regional weekly and Sunday press as their main type of media. Almost 70 percent or CHF 28 million of media expenditure is invested in these media.

Strong growth since 2000 Decline in 2009
According to the study, the sports advertising market has grown by 69% since 2000. This is above average compared to the market as a whole (17%). The categories of sports tourism/sports facilities, sports medicine, image advertising and sportswear, which have seen growth rates of almost 100 percent and higher since 2000, have contributed significantly to this. The study authors explain the increase with the social trend towards greater fitness and health awareness. At the same time, the sports media have begun to specialize with sports-specific specialist magazines and sports channels.
In 2009, however, the volume of sports advertising fell by 19 percent. The study attributes this to two factors. On the one hand, the difficult economic environment is held responsible for the slump. On the other hand, sports advertising was significantly boosted in 2008 by the European Football Championships held in Switzerland (and Austria) (see chart). This advertising fell away in 2009.

Last but not least: eco-fashion struggles with an image problem

A European research team has studied perceptions of «green fashion.» Apparently, eco-fashion has an image problem in Europe. Interest is low. As if «green» weren’t a big seller!

Eco-fashion is well received by North Americans. It is seen as young and trendy. When Americans think of green fashion, they imagine a young woman whose clothes make her look simple but also sexy. The whole thing is enhanced by organic labels from hip celebrities such as U2 singer Bono. The situation is different in Europe. Here, organic fashion has a conservative image. People who wear organic fashion are generally considered to be wealthy - no wonder, as the stuff is usually expensive, but it's just not stylish. So there is still a lot of image cultivation to be done. More advertising. Like Coop's eco-fashion ad featuring actress and former Miss Switzerland Melanie Winiger. After all, there are enough eco-friendly celebrities out there.
