Car4you: Expansion and complete takeover by Tamedia

Tamedia plans to acquire 100 percent of Car4you Switzerland ahead of schedule, effective January 1, 2011. The online automotive portal is to be further expanded and integrated into the Classified Online organization.

With this step, synergies, for example in marketing and advertising sales, can be better utilized, writes Tamedia in a press release on Wednesday. In addition, Car4you.ch and Tamedia's media will be further networked. The marketplaces of Edipresse and Tamedia managed in the Classified Online organization include Homegate.ch Alpha.ch, Jobwinner.ch and Jobup.ch and Swissfriends.ch. Car4you.ch ideally complements the portfolio and strengthens Tamedia's position in the promising online classifieds market.

Tamedia acquired a 15 percent stake in the operator of the online vehicle portal Car4you.ch at the beginning of January 2010. The original plan was to complete the takeover by 2013 at the latest. The now agreed, early takeover of the remaining 85 percent will be reported to the Swiss Federal Competition Commission and is subject to its approval. The parties have agreed not to disclose the details of the takeover.

Teleboy Awards 2010: Susanne Wille is "TV darling 2010

The audience has spoken, and at the Teleboy Awards, they’ve determined the winners and losers of the TV year: The winners are Susanne Wille and Sven Epiney, while Roman Kilchsperger is the big loser.

The users of the TV platform Teleboy have chosen the winners in four categories from six nominees each, who will now be honored with the Teleboy Award - presented by Samsung. The winner in the "TV darling 2010" category was Susanne Wille clearly ahead Sven Epiney and Andrea Jansen. Even after 10 years of "10vor10," Wille is still undisputedly Switzerland's most popular presenter.

Roman Kilchsperger had to accept a triple defeat: In the "TV-Liebling 2010" he landed on the second last place, only "glanz&gloria"-Cüplitrinkerin received less votes. Annina Frey. Kilchsperger's new show "Traders" landed in last place in the "Most Exciting New Show" category, while "Deal or No Deal" received the "Finally Gone!" award for the least missed cancelled show.

By contrast, the SF docu-soap "Üsi Badi" was well received: The format was voted "most exciting new program. The controversial show "Jung, wild & sexy" from 3+ was a notable success, taking second place. Sven Epiney, the runner-up in the "TV favorite" category, had his own category at the Teleboy Awards: The audience voted the long-running "5gegen5" the "Best show with Sven Epiney.

Denner may not sell coffee capsules for Nespresso machines

The St. Gallen Commercial Court ruled on Monday that Swiss discounter Denner must remove its new coffee capsules from the shelves. Nestlé has thus successfully defended itself against competition for its Nespresso coffee capsules.

Since mid-December, the Migros subsidiary has been offering four different varieties at an introductory price of 25 centimes per capsule. By comparison, consumers pay almost twice as much for a capsule from Nespresso. The Commercial Court of St. Gallen has now issued a provisional order prohibiting Denner from offering, distributing, selling, advertising, exporting or otherwise marketing the coffee capsules "Denner Expresso Milano, Denner Ehtiopian Dream, Denner Indian Summer" and "Denner Dolce Vita" with immediate effect. The daily newspaper Le Temps reported on the court decision on Tuesday.

The decision also states that Denner may no longer advertise with the slogan "Denner -was susch?" and the claim "Compatible with your Nespresso machine. Denner now has ten days to respond in writing to the decision of the Commercial Court.

"We will use all legal means to defend ourselves against the decision of the Commercial Court," says Denner spokeswoman Nicole Schöwel in response to an inquiry from the SDA news agency. "Denner had clarified the legal situation before launching the coffee capsules.

Denner had successfully entered the coffee capsule business. According to Schöwel, supply bottlenecks occurred time and again. She does not disclose any figures. Despite the growing competition, Nestlé remains the clear market leader with Nespresso. However, the food company has recently repeatedly reacted against the competition by taking legal action.

Advico Young & Rubicam: Eavesdropping in the mountain pub

Advico Young & Rubicam created radio spots for the winter sale at Sportplausch Wider. The music you hear is the kind that usually plays only when locals are hanging out among themselves at the mountain pub.

Winter sports are great, but also very expensive: the prices of ski lifts, restaurants and hotels make visitors from the lowlands despair - and conjure up a blissful smile on the faces of mountain dwellers, who make a killing season after season. The new radio commercials from Advico Young & Rubicam with songs in the typical Musikantenstadl sound confirm these fears: In the mountains, they take great pleasure in using all sorts of tricks to take money out of tourists' noses. Towards the end of the commercial, the consolation: thanks to the sale at Sportplausch Wider, you can at least ease the strain on your battered budget when buying equipment.

Epiphany Conference: Classical media under pressure

On Tuesday, the media industry gathered in Zurich for the traditional Epiphany Conference of the Swiss Media Association. Association President Hanspeter Lebrument emphasized the importance of quality in the media and warned of a growing divide between journalism and the communications industry. IPMZ Director Gabriele Siegert addressed the declining significance of traditional media. The presentation by Roger de Weck, the new Director General of the Swiss Radio and Television Corporation (SRG), had been eagerly anticipated.

The structural change in the media, which has seen the rapid emergence of new portals such as Facebook, Twitter and Google TV, is putting increasing pressure on traditional media to adapt. Despite all the prophecies of doom, publishers are coping well with the changes, according to Association President Hanspeter Lebrument.

"I can't listen to the crisis talk anymore," said Lebrument, President of the Swiss Media Association. For years, the media had been accused of one crisis after another. Recently, it has been said that the media are in a quality crisis. As in other sectors, there are undoubtedly individual failures. However, it is completely inappropriate to speak of a quality crisis in the media. On the contrary: compared to the past, journalists are much better trained today, which has had a positive effect on quality.

This also applies to communication and PR specialists, who, like journalists, have become much more professional in recent years. Lebrument called for no rift to be created between journalism and the communications sector. Rather than invoking a holy war, both sides should talk to each other and work together.

IPMZ Director: Publicity monopoly eroding

Gabriele Siegert (pictured below), Director of the Institute of Mass Communication and Media Research at the University of Zurich (IPMZ), had some words of warning for publishers. The traditional media are losing importance, she said. Their core competence - the production of publicity - is eroding. Media users are emancipating themselves. They want to use media selectively and interactively. Participating instead of just consuming is the solution. Publishers are now just a few of many who offer media products.

From a social point of view, the retreat of many media consumers into the private sphere should be viewed critically. There is a need not only for discussion about personal matters, but also for public dialog. Reporting on political and economic current affairs, classification, context and opinions remain important. "The public is interested in socially relevant topics. And criticism of the media can also be interpreted as a declaration of love. We are not indifferent to the media," said Siegert.

The media will also be an issue at the highest political level in 2011. In the middle of the year, the Federal Council will present a report on the state of the media in Switzerland. IPMZ analyses will also be included in this report.

"Qualité populaire"

The presentation by the new Director General of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG), Roger de Weck, was eagerly awaited. He was informative, diplomatic and willing to talk. When asked by Josefa Haas about his position in the tough dispute with publishers on the subject of online advertising, he said he was open to negotiations. "I am sure that we will find a solution," was his statement on this key issue. With regard to the radio and television program he is aiming for, he promised a "Qualité populaire" and stated that high ratings would not only be achieved with shallow fare. In this context, he expressly praised the "Üsi Badi" series. De Weck wants a closer exchange between the different regions of the country than before. A newly created general secretariat under the management of Walter Bachmann will help him in this. He emphasized that finances are secure in the medium term and that, without any unforeseen events, the year that has just begun could end in the black.

Last but not least: You can believe anything on Wikipedia, almost anything

You can almost always rely on Wikipedia. But there’s a reason why the free encyclopedia still isn’t allowed to be cited as a reputable source in academic literature...

Many Wikipedia articles are just as accurate as their counterparts in the Brockhaus or the Encyclopaedia Britannica. The community of authors often update current events within a very short space of time and usually iron out errors quickly. Nevertheless, the encyclopaedia has not been spared embarrassing mishaps since it was launched a good ten years ago: for example, a Scottish call center employee created an article about himself and quickly posed as a highly decorated war hero. Students declared their quick-footed professor dead. There was also an island off the Syrian coast called Porchesia for just over ten months. And the fact that not only students but also journalists are happy about the platform is confirmed by a hoax from 2009: after Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg was appointed German Economics Minister in February 2009, an anonymous user added his first name. The false Wilhelm was adopted by numerous media outlets.

20 minutes online: Ueli Walther is the new head of news

The new news director at 20 Minuten online is Ueli Walther. The former deputy editor-in-chief of the Sonntagszeitung took up the newly created position on January 1, 2011.

The editorial team of 20 Minuten Online has grown more and more in recent years, Tamedia spokesman Christoph Zimmer told the news agency SDA. He added that the focus must not only be on the strategic development of the platform, but also on day-to-day business. That is why the new position has been created, Zimmer continued, confirming a corresponding report by Klein Report on Tuesday.

Walther, 50, worked until September 2010 as a deputy editor-in-chief and page-maker at the Sonntagszeitung. Previously, he was a page-maker and member of the editorial board at Blick and worked, among other things, as a correspondent in London, Brussels and in the Federal Parliament.
