Three BBC journalists arrested and mistreated in Libya

Three BBC journalists were arrested and mistreated while covering the events in Libya. Among other things, they were subjected to a mock execution.

According to the broadcaster on Thursday, the men were beaten and then released after 21 hours in custody. The three reporters, a Palestinian, a Briton and a Turk, were arrested by Libyan soldiers on Monday at a checkpoint ten kilometers south of the embattled town of Sawija. They were then taken to a barracks where they were mistreated by soldiers of Libyan ruler Muammar al-Gaddafi and members of the secret police.

The British Foreign Office called the treatment of the BBC team abhorrent. The Libyan leadership had invited journalists to the country to see the truth. This had now become blatantly visible. The British Guardian also reported on Thursday that its editorial team had lost contact with its correspondent Ghaith Abdul-Ahad. The journalist from Iraq had been reporting from Libya for the past two weeks. He last reported on Sunday from Al-Sawija, a heavily embattled city in the west of the North African country.

A journalist from Brazil who was arrested by Libyan government troops was released on Thursday. Her colleague Andrei Netto was released from a prison near the capital Tripoli, the Brazilian newspaper Estado reported on its website, according to SDA. Netto is said to be in good health and is currently staying at the Brazilian ambassador's residence in Libya. He will leave the country on Friday, Estado further reported.

Teens spurn online friendship with businesses

Social networks like Facebook are not as effective as one might think at building brand loyalty among teenagers. It is not uncommon for Facebook to be hailed as a good communication and marketing platform for companies seeking to advertise.

However, the reality for the high-spending teenage target group is quite different. They do not want to be friends with brands on the social network, as the market researchers at Forrester Research found out. Younger Facebook users are not willing to become friends with companies on social media. As teenagers in particular spend a lot of time on social networks, many companies are present on Facebook and the like. According to the study by Forrester, only six percent of twelve to 17-year-old US web users are looking to get close to brands. This figure is twice as high among consumers aged between 18 and 24.

According to the study, young Facebook users are not generally averse to market companies and their products. However, direct contact with the companies is largely undesirable. According to the teenagers surveyed, brands should simply not be present on social media. If they are present, young users expect more attention and interaction from companies.

Jay is an experienced journalist who works very carefully, said a spokesman for the news agency on Friday. His expulsion was unacceptable. The Iranian authorities gave no reason for the expulsion.

Numerous foreign journalists had their press cards revoked in mid-February after reporting on an opposition demonstration. Since July 2009, international media have been officially banned from reporting on protests and contacting opposition members. (sda)
