Communicator of the month: Danielle Lanz

In March, the Swiss advertising agency SW named co-owner Danielle Lanz “Communicator of the Month” for March, on behalf of the entire Ruf Lanz agency. The

Advertising agency Ruf Lanz was voted Agency of the Year by the Art Directors Club Switzerland for the second time in a row in 2010. And at the APG Poster Night at the end of March, Danielle Lanz and Markus Ruf's agency was the big winner: in addition to a silver award, it won gold twice - once the "main prize", the Swiss Poster Award, for "the unholy alliance", the poster for Zurich's public transport company VBZ, which shows the two National Councillors Daniel Jositsch (SP) and Christoph Mörgeli (SVP) sitting next to each other in a streetcar, looking rather annoyed. The claim with which VBZ advertises the high density of stops in Zurich's transport network: "Luckily there's a stop every 300 meters in Zurich". As Swiss advertising appoints people rather than agencies as communicators, Danielle Lanz was chosen to represent the entire agency, according to a SW press release.

Publishers' and journalists' associations on the Bakom study: Future of the media

Publishers' and journalists' associations have differing views on the impact of media concentration on quality and diversity of opinion. This is evident from their statements on six OFCOM studies on the future of the media in Switzerland.

The studies were commissioned by the Federal Office of Communications OFCOM. This was triggered by a postulate from National Councillor Hans-Jürg Fehr (SP/SH). An increasingly commercially oriented media system, a concentration of print and electronic media in a few media houses and an increase in free and tabloid media ultimately lead to a loss of quality, warns the study "Media Concentration and Diversity of Opinion" by the Public Spheres and Society research department at the University of Zurich. It describes the danger of all-round journalism that is oriented towards news processing and neglects quality criteria. There is also a threat of journalists becoming less professional.

The Swiss Media Association VSM describes this assessment as undifferentiated. "The quality of Swiss journalism is far higher than one might assume after reading this study. The Association of Swiss Private Radio Stations (VSP) does not see media concentration as a negative factor for the provision of successful programs. In contrast, the two organizations of media professionals SSM and Syndicom partially agree with the findings of the study. In fact, the quality deficits are a consequence of the downsizing of editorial offices and the deterioration in the working conditions of media professionals.

Syndicom, the media and communications union, also criticizes the lack of a collective employment contract. With regard to the Basler Zeitung, it also criticizes the lack of transparency in the ownership structure of media companies. Both organizations, as well as the VSP, are calling for better training and further education opportunities for journalists and programme makers.

Direct and indirect media funding
Media professionals and publishers agree that indirect press subsidies via tariff reductions should be retained. The VSM would like to see new variants. It warns that abolishing the reduced VAT rate for media would reduce the use of press products. With regard to indirect press subsidies, Swiss Post supports the proposals to introduce a uniform rate system for all newspapers.

However, the VSM is skeptical about direct press funding. It poses risks to media freedom. The VSP also warns against media funding that could increase state influence. In contrast, the SSM can imagine direct support measures - for example in areas with endangered media freedom.
Supply.

The proposal made in the study to dispense with the promotion of the member press (association press) meets with little approval Syndicom and the Members' Press Interest Group reject it. The association organs make an important contribution to democracy and diversity of opinion.

The studies and opinions are to be incorporated into a DETEC report, which the Federal Council intends to discuss before the summer vacation.

KSB and Coop with a wink of the eye on April 1

The price competition between Coop and Migros could do with a bit of fun now and again, according to the agency Krieg Schlupp Bürge. That's why the creatives at KSB made a film for Coop that combines the latest price offensives of the two major distributors. With the better ending for Coop, of course. Because the protagonist of Migros - Mr. Klein - writes down the prices at the orange giant, but he goes shopping at Coop. Because you simply get more for your money there, according to the campaign motto.

China blocks Xing service

In recent days, Xing members in China have been unable to access the company's service at all or only very irregularly. Xing now believes that the Great Firewall of China is blocking the service.

Corresponding tips from members in China have accumulated in recent days. This is what the operator of the network for business contacts writes today on its homepage. In the meantime, technical reasons can be ruled out. Therefore one assumes with now that the service is blocked by the Great Firewall of China.

Lawyers who are based in China have already been called in to solve the problem. However, it will not be easy to reactivate Xing for the 500,000 members in China. The company will therefore contact the German authorities and try to ensure that members in China can use the service smoothly again.

Draftfcb/Lowe Group awakens the desire to travel for BMW

Since the end of last year, Draftfcb Lowe/Group has added a new client to its portfolio: BMW Motorrad. Among the first projects now on display is the campaign for the two new BMW touring motorcycles and their debut at Swiss Moto.

At the forefront of the campaign is the motto that "Riding these machines is so much fun that the two tourers will become the best travel memory". Accordingly, the agency placed one of the new motorcycles in the foreground with a souvenir photo. The Golden Gate Bridge can be seen blurred in the background, the pillion passenger is only half in the picture and the new tourer is clearly the focus. This subject is intended to express the fact that the rider photographed here attached importance to what impressed him most on the trip: his new BMW K 1600 GTL ABS, as stated in a Lowe press release.

The print and online campaign is complemented by an unusual mailing. This was sent out in the form of a real photo bag. It contained a photo for each of the 6 new motorcycles with a short description on the back.

Private radio stations want to restrict SRG

The Association of Swiss Private Radio Stations (VSP) wants the SRG to withdraw from those market segments that can just as easily be filled by private broadcasters. For its part, the SRG would like to form a partnership with private media outlets—it believes this is the way to survive in the online market.

In its statement on the studies published by OFCOM, the VSP pleads for a redefinition of the SRG's mission. In the case of radio programs, it should concentrate on DRS 1 and 2. DRS 2 should also be merged with the second programs of other language regions. SRG should leave the regional journals to the private broadcasters and dispense with DRS 3, Virus, Musikwelle and Swiss Classic, Pop and Jazz. DRS should also continue to do without radio advertising.

SRG does not see itself as an adversary, but as a partner of the private media, as it emphasizes in its statement. Together, SRG and the private sector could muster some critical mass against Google, Facebook & Co. With a partnership, they could strengthen themselves on the Internet advertising market and reduce costs. They see themselves as a sustainable guarantor of an independent Swiss (media) offering. SRG refers to its co-financing of the Swiss Dispatch Agency (SDA), which enables smaller newspapers to offer a complete range of services.

New boss at Coop - Joos Sutter succeeds Hansueli Loosli

The retailer Coop has found an internal successor for Managing Director Hansueli Loosli. Joos Sutter, most recently Head of the Trading Directorate, will become the new boss on September 1, while Loosli will become the new Chairman of the Board of Directors as announced.

Joos Sutter has worked for Coop for many years. In 1996, the Grisons native moved from Ems Chemie to Impo Import Parfümerien as Head of Finance/Personnel, in which Coop held a 50 percent stake at the time. In 1999, he moved to the Coop subsidiary Interdiscount, as Coop writes in a press release on Friday. Sutter has been a member of Coop's Executive Board since January 1, 2010. As Head of the Trading Directorate, he is currently responsible for the Coop City department stores, the DIY+Hobby channel and numerous specialist formats such as Toptip/Lumimart, Import Parfumerien, Interdiscount and Dipl. Ing. Fust.

Sutter is not only taking over as Chairman of the Executive Board. He will also become Head of the Retail Directorate as of September 1. The renewed reporting of the core business to the CEO - as was already the case until 2009 - takes into account the great importance that the supermarket channel has and will continue to have in the future, writes Coop.

The current Head of the Retail Directorate, Philipp Wyss, was appointed Head of the Marketing/Procurement Directorate and Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board by the Board of Directors with effect from April 1. In this role, he replaces Jürg Peritz, who is leaving the company for reasons of age.

The reason for the personnel change is the delegates' meeting on Friday, which elected the former Managing Director Hansueli Loosli as an additional member of the Board of Directors. At the subsequent constituent meeting, the Board of Directors appointed Loosli as its Chairman, as planned.

The most successful projects of the Swiss live communication industry are nominated

On April 19, 2011, in Zurich, the Swiss Expo-Event.Live Communication Association will present the Xaver.11 Award in six categories. Twelve nominations were selected by an independent panel of experts, chaired by Hans-Jürg Rufener, Chief Creative Officer of the MCH Group/Rufener Events.

Under the motto "Learn from the best" and in the form of a showcase, the successfully implemented projects come to the fore and offer all participants a platform for active discussions and an exchange of ideas. The highlight after each presentation round in the respective category is the announcement of the winner with the ceremonial presentation of the Xaver Award. In addition, the project organizers have the chance to take home a Public Xaver, which is determined by an interactive audience vote on site. Claude Nobs, founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival, is already Xaver of the Year 2011. He will be honored at the Xaver.11 event in Zurich for his many years of successful work and will accept the award in person.
