Mister Switzerland 2011: SF achieved a market share of only 26.3 percent

TV viewers are increasingly losing interest in the «Mister Switzerland» pageant. Last Saturday night, the show achieved a market share of just 26.3 percent. This is a new low.

Since 2008, the market share has shown a slow but steady downward trend: back then, the market share of the "Mister Switzerland" election was 31.4 percent, in 2009 it fell to 30.9 percent, before finally dropping to 27.7 percent in 2010. Swiss Television points out that market share is not the only deciding factor. However, the show will be analyzed and discussions will be held with all partners, an SRF spokesperson told the news agency SDA. In a few weeks, SRF will decide whether the election will also be given a slot in 2012.

A year ago, the show only achieved a market share of 15 percent in French-speaking Switzerland, whereupon those responsible at French-speaking Swiss television station TSR removed it from the program. At the same time, TSI in Ticino decided to no longer participate in the production.

Deputy Editor-in-Chief leaves the Baz

Urs Buess, deputy editor-in-chief of the Basler Zeitung (Baz), has resigned. As a result, the newspaper continues to face turmoil following the controversy surrounding a consulting contract with a company owned by Christoph Blocher.

Buess did not want to comment further on the move until he had spoken to the BaZ editorial team. This is due to take place on Monday. Buess confirmed information from NZZ am Sonntag and Sonntag that he had resigned.

Urs Buess had previously been seen as a counterweight to editor-in-chief Markus Somm. The former Baz owners Markus Wagner and Tito Tettamanti had appointed the former Weltwoche vice editor and Blocher biographer Somm as head of the Baz last August. Buess became his deputy.

Buess had previously been a member of the Baz editorial team. He returned to the Baz in 2003, after years as head of domestic affairs, member of the editorial board and most recently Paris correspondent for the Tages-Anzeiger. He had already worked for the Baz in the 1980s.

Change and turbulence
According to the two reports in the Sunday press, a discussion between the editorial team, editor-in-chief Somm and BaZ publisher Moritz Suter is said to have taken place before Buess was dismissed last week. However, neither Buess nor the editorial board wanted to confirm this on Sunday. On February 21, the Baz announced the reduction of eight editorial positions for cost-cutting reasons, following a reduction of 22 full-time positions two years ago. The former Baz publishing family Hagemann sold the newspaper and printing company to Wagner and Tettamanti in February 2010.

The fact that one of Christoph Blocher's companies had received a consultancy mandate with the company later caused considerable turbulence in the region. As a result, on November 24, former Crossair founder Moritz Suter took over the company, whose debts at the time were estimated at around CHF 100 million.
