SF: Royal Wedding Reaches 40 Percent Market Share

On Friday, 302,000 people watched Kate Middleton and Prince William tie the knot on SF 1. The special broadcast, which aired between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., achieved a market share of about 40 percent.

The wedding’s viewership figures are on par with those of «Schweiz aktuell.» That program also had a 40 percent market share on Friday (403,000 viewers). That’s a very good figure for this time of day, SF media spokesperson Marco Meroni told the SDA news agency. By way of comparison: The main edition of 'Tagesschau« at 7:30 p.m. achieved a market share of 57 percent (766,000 viewers) on Friday. In French-speaking Switzerland, around 72,000 people (market share: 22.3 percent) watched the wedding ceremony on TSR, as Mathilde Boillat, communications manager at TSR, told the SDA.

The British royal wedding attracted more television viewers than, for example, the wedding of Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria to commoner Daniel Westling. On June 19, 2010, when the event was broadcast, 269,000 people tuned in, according to Marco Meroni (market share: 24 percent).

Freedom of the Press: No Longer a Free Press in Mexico and Egypt

According to a U.S. study, given the dangers and violence associated with drug trafficking, Mexico can no longer be considered a country with a free press. However, there was also a dramatic deterioration in press freedom last year in the Middle East and North Africa.

This is the conclusion reached by the U.S. organization Freedom House in its latest annual report. Egypt, for example, was downgraded to «not free.» Countries such as Libya, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Tunisia continue to rank among those nations worldwide where the state of press independence and freedom of the press is particularly poor. «In 2010, we saw how easily governments in the Middle East resorted to repressing the media,» said Karin Deutsch Karlekar of Freedom Press.

While there have been some breakthroughs in the Middle East earlier this year that give reason to hope the region is moving toward a higher global standard of press freedom, there are also worrying developments, Deutsch Karlekar said. For example, in Egypt, where the armed forces recently restricted media coverage.

Mexico’s downgrade to «not free» was described as surprising. Nevertheless, it stems from the reported attacks on journalists in the country, self-censorship, and the climate of fear fueled by drug trafficking. In addition to Mexico and Egypt, significant deteriorations were also noted in Honduras, Hungary, South Korea, Thailand, Turkey, and Ukraine. However, the report states that it appears the decline, which has persisted for years, is coming to an end. It is not clear, however, whether there will be an overall improvement this year.

The ten countries with the lowest rankings are Belarus, Burma, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. (SDA)

Press council gives right to animal rights activist

The Press Council has approved a complaint by animal rights activist Erwin Kessler against the Tages-Anzeiger. It found a violation of the duty of truth and correction. The article was about slaughtering and butchering.

Under the title "New rules for the license to kill," the Tages-Anzeiger reported on December 1, 2010, about a change in the animal protection ordinance. The article stated, among other things: "No animal may be slaughtered without prior stunning in Switzerland - unlike in the EU, which allows Jews and Muslims to kill ritually without stunning."

Erwin Kessler of the Verein gegen Tierfabriken Schweiz (VgT) then wrote a letter to the editor of the Tages-Anzeiger pointing out that the ritual slaughter of chickens was indeed permitted in Switzerland. Since the Tages-Anzeiger refused to publish the letter to the editor, Kessler filed a complaint with the Press Council.

The latter found in a statement of April 15 that the Tages-Anzeiger had indeed violated the "Declaration of the Duties and Rights of Journalists". The daily newspaper would have been obliged to correct the false report.

The report is about how animals may be killed or slaughtered in Switzerland according to animal protection legislation. The statement that no animals may be slaughtered without stunning in Switzerland is wrong.

The fact that chickens may be slaughtered in Switzerland is not an irrelevant secondary aspect in the overall context of the article - even if the proportion of animals killed in this way is small. (SDA)

Last but not least: The return of the paper clip

The world breathed a collective sigh of relief when Microsoft finally fired that annoying Office assistant, Karl Klammer, years ago. But now the nightmare is back.

The talking paperclip is considered one of the worst inventions in Microsoft's history. It always knew everything better, jumped into the picture for no reason and without being asked, gave unwanted advice and drove users crazy. "Passive-aggressive, at worst simply hostile" was how the inventor of her predecessor Bob later described her behavior. And even her creator today calls her "one of the most annoying characters of all time", according to Spiegel.de. Meanwhile, there are scientific studies on the question of "Why people hate the paper clip", and there is a plethora of videos, texts and cartoons in which Karl Klammer meets a cruel end. In short, the character is hated and despised like no other. Microsoft realized this and removed the paperclip from the scene around six years after its birth. And now the company is resurrecting her once again - as the heroine of the latest Office learning software. She is discreetly hidden away and is usually only displayed as a fixed icon, according to Spiegel.de. But she is said to still have the same clever old sayings in store ... Let's hope that the Karl Klammer character disappears underground again soon

- but then goodbye, please.

Catholic Media Award 2011 for SF-Dok and RSR series

This year, the Catholic Media Award goes to two electronic media productions. The Swiss Bishops' Commission for Communication and Media has honored a documentary series by Swiss Television and a children's program in French-speaking Switzerland.

On the one hand, the award was presented to the seven-part Swiss television documentary series "Kriminalfälle. The 7 Deadly Sins" under the editorship of Helen Stehli Pfister for its very successful examination of the various facets of evil. This was announced by the Swiss Bishops' Conference. According to SDA, the independent jury of the media prize particularly highlighted the article "Wollust unter der Soutane" by Michael Hegglin. This article addressed the scandalous sexual abuse of minors by priests in an exemplary and helpful manner.

The jury also honored the children's program entitled "Les Zèbres" by Radio Suisse Romande. This program has been broadcast for ten years. Hosted by Jean-Marc Richard, the program addresses children's questions about God and the world on a daily basis. According to the jury, Joël Cruchard answers them in a child-friendly way.

The Catholic Media Prize is endowed with CHF 4,000 and will be divided equally between the two winners this year. The public award ceremony will take place on May 24 in Fribourg.
