Bertelsmann Reorganizes Direct Group

The media company Bertelsmann has reorganized the Direct Group's operations. Following the sale of its French operations, which was completed at the end of May, the Direct Group will be dissolved as an independent division of Bertelsmann effective June 30, 2011.

After that, the four divisions RTL Group, Random House, Gruner + Jahr and Arvato will remain. The club and direct marketing businesses in the German-speaking countries, Spain and Eastern Europe will in future be managed organizationally under Corporate Investments, for which Bertelsmann Executive Board member Thomas Rabe will be responsible, as New-Business.de writes on Wednesday. Corporate Investments includes BMG's activities in the music rights business as well as the Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments BDMI and Bertelsmann Asia Investments BAI funds.

At the same time, strategic options are being examined for the Eastern European book distribution businesses in Russia, Ukraine, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. These include a possible sale. According to New-business.de, the CEO of Direct Group, Fernando Carro, will remain responsible for Direct Group. He will also take on additional tasks within the Group, including the development of growth opportunities in Central and South America and Spain.

ADC presents yearbook 2011

On Thursday evening, the annual opening reception for the latest ADC Yearbook will take place in Zurich.

Like last year, the ADC Yearbook consists of two books. In the first book, the award-winning works are honored in the usual manner. In the second book, two artists from outside the industry put their personal views on paper. "La deuxième chance" is the title of the work by Linus Bill and Adrien Horni. They used works that fell by the wayside during the judging process and which inspired their artistic imagination.

Info and reference: Werd Publishers Zurich or in bookstores.

The vernissage is on Thursday evening, June 16, at 6:30 pm at the Christophe Guye Gallery, Dufourstrasse 31, in Zurich.

What two neighbors do for the new coffee machine, for example, is shown in the new TV spot from Inhalt & Form, in which things get really busy. The agency hired a stunt crew especially for the production.

Press Council: Advertising and editorial section insufficiently separated

The Swiss Press Council has upheld a complaint filed by the Associazione Ticinese dei Giornalisti, a chapter of the journalists’ association Impressum, against the Corriere del Ticino. The newspaper had printed a cigarette advertisement in the middle of an editorial page without clearly distinguishing the advertisement visually and/or conceptually.

In March 2010, Corriere del Ticino published a circular colored cigarette advertisement ("Where friendship happens") with a diameter of approximately 15 centimeters in the middle of an editorial page. The Associazione Ticinese dei Giornalisi complained to the Press Council about the violation of the requirement to separate the editorial section from the advertising.

The plenum of the Press Council considers this requirement to have been violated in the specific case. It is true that the cigarette advertisement is recognizable to the readership on closer inspection even without additional conceptual labeling or visual demarcation. However, due to the unusual placement of the advertisement in the middle of editorial articles, readers would be misled, at least at first glance, since the eye would almost inevitably fall on the advertisement when opening the page. Such "text field ads" tend to counteract the separation of editorial and commercial content. All the more reason to demand clear conceptual and/or visual identification.

Scholz & Friends: Brand campaign for Sunrise launched

A few days after the unveiling of the new brand slogan «Everything for your day. Sunrise,» Sunrise Communications launched its new public campaign on Monday. It was developed by Scholz & Friends Zurich.

The new campaign kicks off with an image spot that invites customers to experience a day full of warmth and energy, creativity and freedom, proximity and reliability with Sunrise. The TV spot with sunny Swiss summer impressions stands for a new orientation of brand communication, which in the future is to stage the importance of the Sunrise brand more than before. The focus is on the company's promise to reliably give its all at all times to ensure that customers have a good day. The new brand song is the title "Sunrise" by American songwriter and performer Brandon Heath. The melody is also the basis for the new sound logo and ringtones.

The first motifs of the new print campaign appear at the same time as the new image spot. The images show how the private communications provider's services, products and rate plans help customers to realize their ideas, goals and wishes. The image motifs will subsequently be supplemented by product and price campaign motifs.

The new communication line will shape the entire orchestrated brand presence in the future, from classic communication to POS, online media and internal communication, according to the agency. Simultaneously with the new spot on TV and in cinemas, the new print and poster campaign will also be seen in all high-reach Swiss media.

Pixel disco: Jack Black on the VBZ streetcar roof

In collaboration with Warner Bros. Pictures, Pixeldisko has finalized a tram-roof advertisement for the movie «Gulliver’s Travels» and, without further ado, strung the lead actor onto the roof of the VBZ trams.

Although the work has been flickering across local cinema screens since the beginning of the year and the booked advertising period has expired, the main actor Jack Black is still allowed to make his rounds through Zurich. "The attractively realized motif prompted us to present this eye-catching streetcar roof advertisement as inspiration for other advertisers," says Daniel Andres, Head of VBZ Traffic Media, commenting on the work.

Press Council: No discrimination by Blick am Abend

The Swiss Press Council has rejected a complaint lodged by the Swiss gay rights group Juso Schweiz against Blick am Abend. It considers it problematic, but not discriminatory in this specific case, to use generalized clichés about homosexuals in a lifestyle report about summer fashion.

In June 2010, Blick am Abend reported on summer fashion trends from Milan. The items of clothing and fashion accessories shown in the article "Achtung Männer, Tunten-Falle!" were divided into the two categories "cool" and "gay" and commented on as to whether they could be worn "without hesitation" or were not recommended. Gaynossinnen Juso Schweiz, a working group of Juso Switzerland, complained to the Press Council about the "homophobic and discriminatory" report, which gave a positive rating to garments for "real men" and a negative rating to those for "gays".

The plenary session of the Press Council discussed the complaint controversially, the supervisory body said in its statement. Together with the title, the report conveys the message to the readership, based on generalizing prejudices about homosexuals, to be careful when choosing clothes not to walk around the way gays supposedly typically dress. With this thrust, the report suggests to a certain extent that gays are not real "men" and thus collectively degrades the minority of homosexual men. For a minority of the Press Council, the report is therefore discriminatory.

A majority of the Press Council finds the use of generalized clichés about homosexuals problematic. However, the report in the free newspaper does not focus on the contrast between "gay" and "non-gay", but rather on the assessment of current fashion trends from the subjective perspective of a journalist. Blick am Abend had therefore not exceeded the relatively high threshold for discrimination.

Last but not least: The retro high tech brewery

What are a bodybuilder, a heavy metal drummer, and a few technicians doing in a former printing plant? They're brewing the new Hahn Super Dry together...

For its latest commercial, the Australian beer brand traveled back to the 1980s together with Publicis Mojo Sydney. An old printing factory was transformed into a "retro high-tech brewery" designed with great attention to detail. A production process with music from Knight Rider, cassette recorders and other achievements of the time. The CEO, who taps his beer directly from the helicopter, rounds off the whole thing. Creating advertising for beer must be great.
