SDA with new logo - change in the Board of Directors

The Swiss News Agency (SDA) has revamped its logo. The new design is intended to reflect modernity and dynamism.

As part of the new umbrella brand, the sda companies news, sports information, information technology and distribution will in future appear under a uniform logo. The name SDA is underlaid in each case with a bar that has a different color depending on the company. This was announced by the national news agency on Wednesday.

To emphasize the Swissness of SDA as a national news agency, the same red is used for the bar in the logo as for the Swiss flag. Under the bar, the words "Die Nachrichtenquelle" ("The news source") are written in each of the three national languages. The old logo dates back to the 1970s. It would have looked dusty due to the retro look, the agency continued in the statement. The new brand identity is intended to strengthen SDA's identity and its positioning in the media market. The new appearance was developed by the Lumina agency.

German newspapers: Lawsuit against ARD's "Tagesschau" app

Eight German newspaper publishers are taking ARD's "Tagesschau" app to court. They see the state broadcaster's online offering as unlawful competition.

On Tuesday, a complaint was filed with the Competition Chamber of the Regional Court of Cologne, said Christian Nienhaus, Chairman of the North Rhine-Westphalia Publishers' Association, at the Medienforum NRW in Cologne.

In addition to the Waz Mediengruppe, of which Nienhaus is Managing Director, the plaintiffs also include Axel Springer Verlag, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Medienholding Nord, the publishing houses M. DuMont Schauberg and Lensing-Wolff as well as Rheinische Post. The publishers are of the opinion that the text portions offered by the "Tagesschau" in addition to videos and audio contributions compete with the newspapers. Nienhaus argued that such free offerings from the ARD and ZDF broadcasters, which are financed by license fees, were destroying the market for publishers. The broadcasters had already rejected the criticism at the weekend. The "Tagesschau" app is a piece of software that brings the content of the "Tagesschau" online service to smartphones and tablet computers.

Publishers in Switzerland are also criticizing the online offerings of state television. At the end of March, they presented a legal opinion. According to this opinion, SRG's online offering is not part of the public service remit. (SDA)

Press Council: Complaint against Tages-Anzeiger partially approved

The Swiss Press Council has partially upheld a complaint filed by the Swiss Freethinkers' Association (FVS) and its Valais chapter against the *Tages-Anzeiger*.

In November 2010, the Tages-Anzeiger reported that a "freethinker group" was planning a "Bible and Koran burning" in front of the Federal Palace. The group, which includes the "controversial Valais teacher and president of the Valais section of the Freethinker movement Valentin Abgottspon", would go one step further with this action than with its recently demanded "Bible censorship for children and young people". A day later, the newspaper corrected the previous day's account ("Freethinkers strongly condemn Bible and Koran burning"). Nevertheless, the FVS and its Valais section complained to the Press Council.

The court concludes that the newspaper violated its duty to tell the truth because it should not have relied on the assertion of two informants that the president of the Walliser FreidenkerInnen supported the planned burning of books without consulting Abgottspon. By publishing the corrective retraction, however, the Tages-Anzeiger had fulfilled its duty to correct.
