PR Council: Cannes winner Jung von Matt under investigation

The Jung von Matt agency was awarded a Gold PR Lion in Cannes. Now there are suspicions that the case violated transparency requirements. The German PR Council is investigating.

This principle states that the sender of a PR message must be recognizable. Online campaigns are no exception. According to Wuv.de, the German Council for Public Relations DRPR, the PR industry's self-regulatory body, is currently looking into the Mercedes case "Tramp a Benz" by Jung von Matt. In this case, the blog of the tramper and performance artist Stefan Gbureck had only been "unmasked" after identification by the web community and the intervention of bloggers. To get to the Mercedes agency Jung von Matt, which had registered the web presence, a query of the Internet domain is necessary.

A hearing of the agency on Case "Tramp a Benz" had already taken place on February 14, i.e. before the Cannes closing date, as Wuv.de further writes. A statement from Mercedes-Benz on the case is still pending, confirms the DRPR President Richard Gaul.

Last but not least: Lying through the crisis

A Swiss study on crisis communication shows that organizations can protect their trust through communication. However, simply apologizing publicly may still help to build trust in the USA, but in our culture, social norms such as not lying in a crisis are of greater importance.

A study by the University of Fribourg has now officially proven that communication plays a decisive role in maintaining or losing trust during crises. The study examines the effect that certain communication strategies have on the attribution of trustworthiness to profit and non-profit organizations. This is because trustworthiness is considered a key prerequisite for ensuring that positive reputations are anchored in the minds of media consumers in the long term or are not destroyed by crises for years to come. Over 700 people took part in the study, which systematically examines crisis communication by organizations.

The results provide several key findings: For example, although a public apology certainly helps to build trust in the USA or in Asia, this is not the case in our culture. Even the orientation towards social norms - for example not to lie in a crisis or to comply with the legal framework - is apparently taken for granted in our culture to such an extent that neither of these contribute to the attribution of trustworthiness. However, if these norms are not observed, organizations suffer a severe loss of trust.

What is new about the study is that crises are classified according to their reputational risk. On the one hand, this helps to deploy strategies in a targeted manner according to their impact and, on the other, to view crises from the perspective of public perception. All too often, organizations focus their crisis communication on themselves without paying attention to social norms, for example. The study also distinguishes between companies and non-profit organizations for the first time. This is because different criteria are sometimes applied to NPOs in crises when attributing trustworthiness than to companies.

According to the study, crises affect organizations in two ways: firstly, through the often devastating financial damage and secondly, through the sudden loss of trust and credibility. While financial values are often recovered after a short time, credibility continues to suffer for years afterwards.

New security server to protect the Internet

On Wednesday, June 22, 2011, the first of three new security servers designed to protect the Internet was unveiled at a meeting of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) in Singapore. The other two locations are Zurich, where Switch will put the server into operation in September 2011, and San José, California.

The Packet Clearing House (PCH) servers house special cryptographic keys that are required for the DNSSEC security protocol, which also protects Internet addresses in Switzerland (.ch) and Liechtenstein (.li). The three new security servers in Singapore, Zurich - which is still under construction - and San José (California) house special cryptographic keys that are required for the DNSSEC security protocol. DNSSEC guarantees Internet users the authenticity of websites they visit.

DNSSEC is an extension of the Domain Name System DNS, which serves to ensure the authenticity and integrity of the data of DNS responses. Like an insurance policy, DNSSEC guarantees Internet users that only the website they want to access will be displayed, according to a Switch announcement. Through technical measures, the requesting computer can thus recognize whether the response to an Internet address in the DNS actually comes from the server that is registered with Switch as responsible. At the same time, it is ensured that this response has not been changed during transportation via the Internet.
