Swisscom TV: on-demand TV content increasingly popular

TV content on demand is becoming increasingly popular: in the first half of this year alone, Swisscom TV customers accessed more than three million films and live sports events.

This means that the number has almost doubled compared to the same period last year, Swisscom writes in a press release. In order to meet increasing customer demand, the Teleclub on Demand offering is being continuously expanded. Customers can currently choose from around 5,000 titles, including more than 1,000 in high-definition (HD) quality.

Publigroupe: Digital division grows by eight percent

Publigroupe posted a net result of CHF 14.9 million in the first half of 2011. The operating result improved from CHF 11.3 million to CHF 13.8 million. Total sales fell by 11 percent, while the digital segment grew by 8 percent.

Calculated at constant exchange rates, the increase was as much as 20 percent, as the advertising marketer announced on Monday. The company is less successful in the traditional advertising marketing business, as the figures show. In the first six months, the operating loss at EBIT level widened from CHF 3.7 million to CHF 6.2 million. However, part of the loss is attributable to write-downs in connection with the withdrawal from the television advertising business. Publigroupe had ceded the television marketing business of the Prosieben Sat.1 and 3+ groups to another company.

Overall, Publigroupe's operating profit grew by 23 percent to CHF 13.8 million in the first half of the year. The increase was mainly due to cost reductions, the company wrote. Nevertheless, the Group was unable to prevent a significant drop in profits of 44 percent to CHF 14.9 million. According to the press release, the low exchange rate of the euro against the Swiss franc had a particularly negative impact on the half-year result.

Search & Find most successful

The Search & Find division was the most successful, contributing CHF 7.2 million to the operating profit. Experience shows that the division achieves a better result in the second half of the year. Overall, Publigroupe expects to improve on the 2010 operating result in the current financial year.

Publigroupe slipped into the red in 2008 due to the poor performance of the advertising marketing business. Thanks to restructuring measures, which included cutting a total of 750 jobs, the Group managed to return to profit last year.

Cases before the Fairness Commission: accuracy of an advertising statement

Anyone who makes a claim in an advertisement must be able to prove that it is correct, even if it is not defined by law. Otherwise, the claim is unfair.

A consumer was annoyed by the statement of a nuclear power plant, which spread the claim in a radio commercial that it generates CO2-free electricity. This claim was misleading. Viewed as a whole, nuclear power produces twice as much CO2 as hydroelectric power plants. The respondent argued that this was political and not commercial communication and therefore did not fall within the scope of the Swiss Fairness Commission, SLK. However, the Second Chamber of the SLK accepted the complaint because electricity is indeed a commercial good and is also marketed accordingly. It did not agree with the opinion of the AKW, which argued that it was not possible to check the correctness of the criticized statement because it was not defined by law. The SLK disagreed. It could not be that advertisers could use this argumentation to circumvent, so to speak, the requirement for the correctness of a statement. In its decision, it wrote: "The respondent is obliged to prove the accuracy of its own advertising statement. It has not met this burden of proof." Accordingly, the Board considered the statement in question to be incorrect and thus unfair within the meaning of Art. 3 lit. b UCA.

The events and leisure magazine *Event.*, launched by Ticketcorner, will be published as a magazine of *Schweizer Illustrierte* starting with the September issue, which comes out today, Monday. The new editor-in-chief is Christoph Soltmannowski.

Event., the Swiss event and leisure magazine with the highest circulation of 235,000 copies, is now the official magazine of Schweizer Illustrierte. Ten times a year, Event. reaches all 185,000 subscribers of Schweizer Illustrierte. Ticketcorner continues to act as presenting partner for Event., sending the magazine to the members of its Member Club and displaying it at its advance booking offices. As before, the leading Swiss event organizer Good News is also involved, providing a share of the advertising acquisition.

As part of this repositioning, there will be a change in the editorial team: Antje Babbe will be succeeded with immediate effect by long-time Ringier employee Christoph Soltmannowski, who helped develop the concept of Event's predecessor magazine "more" back in 2008 and was its editor-in-chief for the first six issues.

New Zealand news agency NZPA ceases operations

The New Zealand news agency NZPA will cease operations at the end of August after 132 years. The agency was a victim of technological change and media consolidation.

Two Australian media groups bought up most of New Zealand's newspapers. The papers in each chain exchange news with each other, so the need for an independent agency has dwindled. Attempts to attract new online and radio customers have not been successful enough in recent years. Most recently, the agency still had 42 employees. NZPA's latest announcement goes on the wire on Wednesday. (SDA)

Slovakia: One subscription for all online media

Nine Slovakian media companies have joined forces to finally earn money with their online publications, as Bloomberg reports. For 2.90 euros a month or 29 euros a year, users can consume the content of all media.

According to the press release, the aim of the model developed by Piano Media is to persuade 1.5% of Slovakia's 2.5 million Internet users to subscribe within a year. By 2015, this figure should rise to five to 15 percent. In the first month, the payment platform generated a modest 40,000 euros. The profits are divided between the individual services depending on the number of users. Piano Media keeps 30 percent of the revenue. One participant told Bloomberg that the monthly revenue could already replace one of the top 10 advertising customers. In the longer term, Piano Media also wants to implement the model in neighboring countries.

SVP changes election campaign ad because of publishers

Some newspapers have rejected the SVP's advertisement for the "Stop mass immigration" initiative - the SVP has therefore changed the title.

General Secretary Martin Baltisser confirmed a report in Südostschweiz and the Aargauer Zeitung on Saturday that the SVP had made the adjustment under pressure from the newspapers. The advertisement originally stated in the plural: "Kosovars slash Swiss!" This was the result of uncontrolled mass immigration. An incident on August 15 in Interlaken BE is described. However, some newspapers only accepted the advertisement with the headline in the singular: "Kosovar slashes Swiss!". According to Baltisser, the SVP considers the original version to be correct. However, they decided pragmatically and accepted the change because it made no difference to the content. The SVP argued that there were two Kosovars at the scene of the crime, even if only one of them had injured the Swiss man with a knife.

The plural version of the advertisement appeared in the St. Galler Tagblatt, whereupon the newspaper apologized for the fact that the "inflammatory subject found its way into the paper in an uncontrolled manner". It defamed an entire ethnic group across the board. (SDA)
