Foreign media report on Swiss elections with little interest
Foreign media outlets showed little interest in reporting on Sunday's federal elections. Where longer articles did appear, the focus was on the SVP's losses.
"Swiss stop the advance of the right-wing populists", headlined Sueddeutsche.de. "The seemingly unstoppable advance of the right-wing populist Swiss People's Party (SVP) has been halted for the time being. According to political observers, its influence on day-to-day politics is likely to wane." Also Time Online sees "the populists slowed down". In neighboring France, only the left-wing Libération reported in detail on the elections: "The right has suffered a setback," wrote the newspaper. Nevertheless, the elections did not result in any upheavals. In Switzerland, which has been largely spared from economic problems, around two thirds still voted on the right, wrote the Libération correspondent from Geneva. The Financial Times reports in its online edition that the parties to the right of the center were the big losers in the elections - the center parties benefited. The elections were a "rare disgrace" for the SVP, which had been growing steadily for almost a quarter of a century. (SDA)
