Analysis: Center-right camp strengthened in the media

Die Medien sind in dem letzten vier Jahren weiter nach rechts gerückt. Dies zeigt eine von Medienprofessor Roger Blum durchgeführte und von der Zeitung Der Sonntag publizierte Analyse.

Four years ago today, Der Sonntag published the left-right positioning of the most important Swiss print titles for the first time. At that time, it became clear that Weltwoche had moved from the right-liberal to the right-wing camp. Beyond that, however, the majority of the press remained left-liberal. Now, Roger Blum has updated the left-right diagram and established the following: Basler Zeitung, Blick and Der Bund have moved to the right since the 2007 elections. This means that for the first time since the 1990s, which tended to be left-liberal, the majority of the media are once again positioned on the center-right. According to the analysis, the Tages-Anzeiger, Südostschweiz and Sonntagsblick are on the left-liberal side. Alongside the Basler Zeitung, the NZZ, NZZ am Sonntag and Neue Luzerner Zeitung are positioned on the right-liberal side. A detailed chart with the classification of the most important Swiss print titles into the categories "Left", "Left-liberal", "Center", "Right-liberal" and "Right" can be found in the current issue of Sonntag.

The results are based on the analysis of comments and articles on seven referendums in the last legislative period and do not claim to be scientific.

Last but not least: Being dead for a good cause

A British taxi driver—who has been dead since January of this year—volunteered to take part in an unusual experiment: After his death, he was mummified in the style of the Egyptian pharaohs.

The scientists in charge, led by a forensic pathologist, prepared the corpse in the same way as the Egyptians did 3,000 years ago. They removed the internal organs except for the heart and brain and placed the body in a salt bath for a month. They then dried the corpse in a specially equipped room and wrapped it in linen cloth to protect it from light and insects. According to Spiegel.de, the documentation of the whole thing will be shown on British television on Monday.

Do people really want to see it? After all, it's for a good cause - science will certainly be pleased. And it's not really bad for the mummy either - it makes no difference to him, the man is said to have said before he died. He won't feel it. Hopefully he really won't feel it, the looks of the countless people sitting in front of the TV, drinking beer, eating potato chips and watching him grow older and older.

New York Times: Over 40,000 paying online subscribers gained

One of the most exciting experiments in journalism seems to be working: The New York Times has gained 43,000 paying subscribers for its website in just three months.

At the end of September, the renowned newspaper had a total of 324,000 readers who are willing to pay for content on the Internet. Other media companies had previously failed with their payment models. "We have made significant progress in our efforts to generate robust revenue from our online business," said CEO Janet Robinson on Thursday in New York.

A regular monthly subscription costs between 15 and 35 dollars, depending on whether the reader wants to use the website, smartphone or tablet apps. The New York Times also reportedly made more money with online advertising.

Since March, readers have only been able to click on 20 articles on the New York Times website for free, after which they have to log in. The newspaper is currently offering trial subscriptions of 99 cents a month. According to company boss Robinson, the drumbeat for online subscriptions has even boosted demand for the printed newspaper. The New York Times is currently advertising with television commercials.

Due to falling advertising revenues at the newspaper, however, the turnover of the entire New York Times Group fell by 3 percent to millions of dollars (483 million Swiss francs) in the third quarter. Thanks to cost savings, however, the media company got out of the red and posted a bottom-line profit of 16 million dollars. In the same period of the previous year, a loss of 4 million dollars was recorded. (SDA)

UBI upholds complaint by Gadaffi lawyer against RTS

In the "Mise au Point" broadcast on March 20, 2011, the then President of the Geneva government François Longchamp accused Charles Poncet - lawyer for Muammar al-Gaddafi's son Hannibal Gaddafi - of being a traitor to his country. Poncet criticized the RTS for not giving him the opportunity to respond to the accusation. The UBI has now found a violation of Article 4 of the Federal Law on Radio and Television, Poncet told the news agency SDA.

This article of the law stipulates, among other things, that editorial broadcasts with information content must "present facts and events in an appropriate manner" so that "the public can form its own opinion". According to RTS, the allegations made by Longchamp were certainly interesting and were therefore broadcast. However, they were already known. In addition, the accusations had been relativized in a journalistic context, said Jean-Jacques Roth, member of the RTS management. The UBI took the view that the public was not as familiar with the dossier as the journalists and had therefore taken the allegations seriously, Roth continued. "We take note of this," he added.

The UBI is an extra-parliamentary commission of the Swiss Confederation. In response to complaints, it must determine whether radio and television broadcasts have violated provisions on the content of editorial programs or whether there has been an unlawful refusal of access to the program.
