Last but not least: Oops, they did it again

The German online magazine Netzpiloten.de is searching for the biggest social media blunder of 2011. The winner of this less-than-flattering title will be presented with the «Oops! Award» in mid-December.

This year's choices include the "Bundestrojaner" snooping software scandal, the poultry manufacturer Wiesenhof attempting to discredit an ARD documentary with an unusual defense video on YouTube, the "Tramp a Benz" campaign by Jung von Matt for Mercedes-Benz, the Pril design competitionthe fuss over Weleda's possibly embellished Facebook figures, the campaign by the Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken who wanted to march with Occupy, Schlecker's communications disaster and Burson-Marsteller's paid anti-Google campaign for Facebook.

> Further information on the nominated missteps/voting

The "Oops! Award" was launched last year by Netzpiloten. With a twinkle in the eye, the aim is to draw attention to missteps on the web. The winner at the time was WeTab. Its managing director Helmut Hoffer von Ankershoffen had praised his own product, which was heavily criticized, to the skies in the Amazon online store under two pseudonyms. And clearly deserved the Oops award. Yikes!

Rod: Party photographers wanted for Tillate.com

Rod Kommunikation has launched a recruitment campaign for the nightlife portal Tillate.com, which has been part of the 20 Minuten media group since the beginning of the year.

Wanted are party photographers who have the distinctive Tilllate style in their blood, the agency said in a statement. The basic idea is visuals away from the party action in the unmistakable posing style. For example, the grannies who pose erotically and lasciviously in the coffee party photo. And the family picture, in which the posing is big and attitudinous, for all it's worth. Or the two bulldogs licking the sexy chick in their midst with relish.

Responsible at Tilllate.com/20Minutes: Mathias Bamert (Head of Product Management), Dominic Beurer (Deputy Head of Marketing 20 Minuten). Responsible at Rod: Ondrej Maczko, Michael Kathe, Angelo Mabellini, Michael Benz, Donovan Szypura. Photography: Jonathan Heyer. Image processing: Felix Schregenberger.

Last but not least: Mexico's Zetas drug cartel sets its sights on chatrooms

The Mexican drug cartel Los Zetas is known for its brutality. Now, it appears to be one of the first organized crime groups to specifically target Internet users in an effort to stifle online reporting.

Three users of the chat room "Nuevo Laredo en Vivo" have been found dead in recent days. A fourth alleged victim was discovered decapitated on Wednesday. As all visitors to the chatrooms post under pseudonyms, users of the chatroom were unable to confirm the identity of the bodies, as SDA wrote on Friday. However, despite such precautions, users are easily vulnerable. This is because the Zetas can track them down based on the traces they leave behind. This is no longer just a confrontation with the government, but a frontal attack on the public, says Jorge Chabat, an expert on security and drug trafficking at the Center for Economic Studies in Mexico City, according to SDA.

Traditional newspapers have often been attacked by Mexico's drug cartels. For example, by throwing explosive devices into their offices and threatening, kidnapping or killing reporters. This violence against journalists in the state of Tamaupilas, where Nuevo Laredo is located, has prompted the local media to self-censor. In this way, citizens are left alone on social networks with their desire to distinguish facts from rumors. Comments about the activities of the Zetas and other cartels in the city of Nuevo Laredo on the border with Texas are possible in the chat room. To get information, the residents have to resort to such chatrooms: Where gunshots can be heard, where cars have been seen with supposed observers from the drug cartels and which streets are safe to drive on.

Now the cartels have obviously learned that such websites have a much higher readership than the small local media. According to SDA, Erick Fernandez, professor of communication at the Ibero-American University in Mexico City, is observing a new behavior of the criminal forces in the country. It looks as if organized crime wants to prevent normal citizens from spreading reports of violence in real time, Romero said. "The intimidation has a multiplier effect". But some of the internet users refused to back down despite the beheadings and warnings from the Zetas. "Anon5182" wrote in the chat room: "I'm willing to sacrifice my life if the soldiers are guarding my information... and if the risk is good for something"

Unfortunately, despite increased security awareness and warnings not to disclose personal information, Internet users remain highly vulnerable. This is according to Matt Harrigan, head of a security company based in San Diego, according to SDA. This is because the information path via cookies, server addresses, login and account information is easy to make visible. It is therefore easy for the Zetas, with all their money from the drug trade, to follow the trail of chat participants.

Disney with record business in 2011 mainly thanks to family programs and ESPN sports channels

Disney is more successful than ever this year. The company's coffers were filled primarily by revenue from Disney's family programming and the ESPN sports channels.

But ABC's full program also generated higher advertising revenues recently. More people flocked to the theme parks and vacation clubs, booked cruises on Disney ships, tuned in to the Group's television channels or bought Mickey Mouse souvenirs.company boss Robert Iger spoke on Thursday in Burbank, California, according to SDA, of the record business that Disney had done in the entire financial year (to October 1).

Turnover rose by 7% to 10.4 billion dollars in the final quarter. Compared to the same period last year, profits even improved by 30 percent to a bottom line of 1.1 billion dollars. After rivals News Corp. and Time Warner had already made more money with television commercials, Disney's performance exceeded analysts' expectations. The entertainment giant now has an annual turnover of 40.9 billion dollars and an annual profit of 4.8 billion dollars.

Disney's area of both concern and hope is digital media. It continued to record high losses of 94 million in the final quarter.
