A little less than a year ago, in its cover story of February 18, 2011, Werbewoche wrote extensively about the phenomenon of reports. After Dominomania, Oceanmania and Stickermania, Migros infected its customers with "Nanomania". Anyone who bought 20 francs from the orange giant received a small game figure as a gift. Collecting and playing with the colorful nanocapsules became a mega-hit. The idea was developed at Wirz. "An agency could hardly wish for a better task," said CD Hanspeter Schweizer, delighted with the "carte blanche" to conjure up a completely new and cross-media campaign from a simple metal capsule. At Wirz, the 48 figures were given different colors, names and a family. Initial games were also developed. These were intended to encourage kids to upload further game options for the Nanos on a specially launched platform. This led to a veritable fever on the Internet.
The Real store in Germany has now apparently also been infected by this. Anyone who buys 15 euros in one of the more than 320 department stores in Germany receives a Nano figure as a customer gift. At Real, however, these are called "Funky Beans" and instead of 48, there are only 30 exclusive figures. At first glance, these seem a little cheaper than the creations from Wirz and Migros.
The Zurich agency is surprised. "We can't say for sure whether the campaign in Germany is a copy of our Nanomania," explains CD Hanspeter Schweizer. Wirz maintains that the campaign with the game capsules was developed as a premiere. "As far as I know, Migros was the first retailer in Europe to acquire a license for these plastic beans in 2010: from Nebus, a Dutch company specializing in special promotions," explains Schweizer. All ideas beyond the naked capsule were then developed at Wirz. The project manager at Migros has not yet been able to comment. However, it is known that Nebus wants to market the capsules in question internationally.
"Real Funky Fever" started on January 2, 20112 and runs until mid-February. The campaign was developed - or adapted? - the campaign was developed - or adapted? by the Goldener Hirschen agency in Cologne.

Commentary by Roman Reichelt, Senior Project Manager Market Development at the Federation of Migros Cooperatives:
"It is true that 'Nanomania' as such is an in-house creation of the Migros Cooperative Association in collaboration with two external partners. We only bought the license for the plastic container with the iron ball inside. What we printed on it - i.e. the fact that we developed 6 peoples and our own planet - was unique in the world in this form. Wirz Werbung was responsible for the artwork and advertising.
As the underlying toy (the plastic shell with ball) can be purchased by any retailer or promotional agency worldwide and repainted and distributed by themselves, it was clear to us that someone abroad would try to reproduce the success of Nanomania in their own country. We have taken note of the campaign by real,- Germany and consider it a compliment that the Nanomania design was certainly the inspiration for one or the other. Beyond that, however, it is not our place to comment on the marketing measures of another retailer."
Comment from a Werbewoche reader:
"The Nanos (possibly a different name) already existed before it was used at Migros. It was already used in Holland by a chain of stores. Same packaging, same size, just different design and possibly different quantities. It's not so tragic who invented it, the main thing is that the idea is good."
