Basler Zeitung: Sans-papiers activists break into editorial office

Sans-papiers activists broke into the editorial offices of the Basler Zeitung newspaper on Wednesday. At around 11 a.m., around twenty people drew attention to issues allegedly suppressed by the media by banging on pan lids, whistling and chanting slogans.

At the same time, the Sans-Papiers collective sent out a media release with the same content as the leaflets distributed on site. It spoke of a "symbolic-theatrical action" that was not directed at the Baz alone, but "at all bourgeois media", which were taking a one-sided "defamatory stance". According to a Baz spokesperson, the activists left voluntarily after five to ten minutes - they had gained unnoticed access to editorial offices that were actually locked. The company is unlikely to press charges. (SDA)

Fairness Commission introduces processing fee

The marked increase in complaints has led the Swiss Commission for Fair Trading to take a radical measure: From January 1, 2012, fees will be introduced for certain individual complaints on a trial basis.

According to a press release issued on Wednesday, complaints to the Swiss Commission for Fair Trading (SLK) have been increasing for years. This has been particularly marked in the case of commercial communication by telephone, fax and e-mail. The increase in this area has amounted to 44 percent since 2008. As a result, the commission has reached the limits of its capacity and can hardly cope with its work with the current resources.

According to the press release, the SLK Foundation intends to introduce a processing fee of CHF 50 per complaint on a trial basis in order to ease the burden. The measure will be limited to one year. This fee does not apply to all complaints, but only to those resulting from commercial contacts by telephone, fax or e-mail. All other complaints, i.e. complaints against advertising in the public domain, will remain free of charge. This is intended to fulfill the main objective of the SLK, namely to ensure fairness in the public domain.

The SLK Foundation also sees this measure in connection with the new regulation that will apply from April 1, 2012, whereby criminal charges can be filed as an alternative to a complaint to the SLK for failure to comply with the star entry in the telephone register.

Markus Somm lets "Arena" show go off the air

Markus Somm has called off a planned «Arena» episode on Basel as a media hub because he does not want to debate with former colleagues. The editor-in-chief of the Baz has issued a statement.

As journalist Philipp Loser of the rival Basel newspaper Daily News reports, Baz editor-in-chief Markus Somm dropped a planned Arena broadcast - because he didn't want any competitors on the show. Vis-à-vis Blick.ch Somm confirmed the report, according to the tabloid's website: He did not want to discuss the matter with ex-employees in the "Arena. "There would have been a risk that internal details would have been discussed. This would have caused problems under labor law.

Shortly after the Arena cancellation became public, Markus Somm issued a communiqué with an personal statement which we naturally do not want to withhold from you:

"The Arena editorial team of Swiss television informed me today that they have canceled Friday's planned broadcast on the situation of the media in general and the Basler Zeitung in particular because I set conditions that they did not want to fulfill. The intention was that I would take part in this edition of the Arena. In order to avoid misunderstandings, I am stating the following:

Only after I had accepted was I informed that employees who had until recently been employed by BaZ were also to appear in the program. For reasons of labor law, it was not possible for me to discuss events at BaZ in public with former employees of the Basler Zeitung, regardless of whether they now work at TagesWoche or at AZ Medien or other publishing houses. The risk that internal information and business secrets would have been divulged in front of the camera with my involvement seemed too great.

I always gladly accept criticism of the Basler Zeitung or of myself and face it without hesitation - as long as I can speak freely without having to take my employer or labor law into consideration. That was not the case here.

I understand that the Arena did not want to respond to this request. I regret that the broadcast cannot take place.

Markus Somm
Editor-in-Chief Basler Zeitung"

Journalistic independence of "Arena" top priority

Swiss Television (SF), for its part, explains the cancellation - or rather the change of the topic of the program - in a communiqué by saying that Somm had tied his participation to unacceptable conditions: He had not wanted to discuss with three prominent Baz alumni who had been scheduled in the front row. The "Arena" editorial team would not give in to any pressure and would decide for itself who would take part in the discussion; the journalistic independence of the "Arena" had top priority.

Last but not least: you vs. yourself

Imagine the following scene: You come home after a hard day at work, open the bedroom door—and find yourself in bed with your own girlfriend.

It's a weird idea, and you won't normally experience this situation. Unless you ride a Honda CBR 1000 RR: then you'll be home faster than you are - provided, of course, that you don't ride a Honda yourself. All clear?
