The Bieler Tagblatt, Journal du Jura and other newspaper products produced on behalf of customers will now be printed at the Bern printing center, as the company announced on Thursday. This will lead to a reduction of 26 jobs in Biel, of which five employees can continue to be employed in Bern. With these steps, the Biel-based media and printing company Gassmann is securing its long-term financial and operational independence as a leading and self-determined printing and media company in the Biel / Seeland / Bernese Jura region and in parts of French-speaking Switzerland, according to the press release. From a personnel perspective, the discontinuation of newspaper printing on the rotary printing press on Längfeldweg in Biel can be described as drastic. According to the media company, a social plan will be implemented for those affected that goes beyond the minimum legal requirements.
The fundamental realignment in newspaper printing came about because the Biel-based media company was faced with the question of whether to replace its newspaper printing and forwarding plant, which was in need of renewal, or to enter into a cooperation. In view of the medium and long-term conditions in the Swiss newspaper printing market, the decision was made in favor of a cooperation. In this context, Medienhaus Gassmann refers to existing overcapacities at new plants. According to SDA, the customer commercial printing business of W. Gassmann AG and Courvoisier Arts Graphiques SA for catalogs, brochures and books is not affected by this realignment. Around 80 employees work in commercial printing at Längfeldweg in Biel. Gassmann intends to invest in this division in the future.
Syndicom criticizes Tamedia
Syndicom is demanding that Tamedia offer all 26 employees affected, not just five, a new job. The union writes this in a communiqué. It is not primarily criticizing Gassmann for not being willing to invest millions of francs in modernizing its production facilities in a printing market characterized by overcapacity. However, it sharply criticized the media group Tamedia for apparently only wanting to offer new jobs in Berne to five of the 26 employees threatened with redundancy. According to the union, Tamedia has enough opportunities within its group not only to take over printing jobs from Gassmann, but also to guarantee a new professional future for all those affected.
We are more than surprised by the announcement in von Gassman's press release that a social plan is apparently to be applied to those affected. A social plan which, according to the CLA for the graphic arts industry, would also have to be negotiated with the relevant trade union, Syndicom. However, such negotiations have not yet taken place. Syndicom is therefore calling on Gassman to enter into negotiations with the union and the works committee as soon as possible.
W. Gassmann AG is an owner-managed printing and publishing company. The company was founded in 1780. At the end of January, the Gassmann Group employed a total of 361 people, 231 of whom worked at W. Gassmann AG, which was affected by the staff cuts.
