Vaud: ban on sexist posters planned

The cantonal parliament of Vaud wants to ban sexist posters on public property. On Tuesday, it instructed the government to draft a corresponding law.

A motion by Green MP Sandrine Bavaud was adopted by 82 votes to 30 with 11 abstentions. This affects 177 locations in the canton where posters are displayed. Similar regulations already exist in France and the UK. In Switzerland, the canton of Vaud will play a pioneering role in this respect, said State Councillor Jacqueline de Quattro in the Grand Council. (SDA)

SRF launches "Less is more" quiz show

Starting in August 2012, SF 1 will air the new game show «Less Is More.» In this early-evening show, three pairs of contestants compete against each other. They must figure out which answer 100 people gave least often in response to a question.

The aim of "Less is more" is to score as few points as possible, as SRF reported in a press release on Wednesday. In the run-up to the show, 100 people were asked questions such as: "Name a former Federal Councillor". 79 people answered with "Adolf Ogi", two people named "Josef Munzinger". The team that finds out which answer was named the least wins the round and a sum of money. According to the announcement, the game has been running very successfully on BBC 1 for some time.

"Less is more" is produced by B&B Endemol and will start in August 2012 in the slot of "5 against 5". The 6.15 p.m. slot on SF 1 will be filled variably. The aim is to present exciting program formats to the television audience on an alternating basis. Head of Entertainment Christoph Gebel: "'Less is more' is a fresh quiz in a proven slot for games. This is in line with SRF's strategy of increasing variety and trying out new program formats."

The host of the show "Less is more" will be announced at a later date. Candidate couples for "Less is more" can register now at broadcasts.sf.tv/less-is-more/news/overview.

Kim Dotcom released from custody

Megaupload founder Kim Schmitz, alias Kim Dotcom, has been released from custody. A New Zealand judge ruled that he was not a flight risk as his assets had been frozen.

Schmitz also had an interest in remaining in New Zealand because of his family, argued Judge Nevin Dawson according to SDA. As a condition, the 38-year-old is not allowed to use the internet and must remain in his property in Auckland. Schmitz's lawyer, Paul Davison, said his client was determined to continue fighting the US charges. These have "no substantive basis whatsoever".

Three other people responsible for the now closed online storage service who were arrested together with Schmitz had already been released earlier. The four had been arrested by the New Zealand police on January 20 at the request of the US authorities for Internet piracy.

The judge's decision on Wednesday is a setback for the US judiciary, which is demanding the extradition of the four people responsible for Megaupload. In the current proceedings in New Zealand, extradition to the USA is to be heard from August 20. The hearing is expected to last three weeks. If Schmitz, who comes from Kiel, is brought before a US court, the former internet hacker could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

The USA accuses those responsible for Megaupload of having turned the platform, which has since been shut down, into one of the largest hubs for illegal copies of films and music. The rights holders have suffered damages of more than 500 million dollars as a result. The defendants deny the allegations. Megaupload was an online storage platform for all types of files. Anyone who uploaded a video, for example, received a link with which it could be accessed. This mechanism was often used to distribute illegal copies of new movies or music albums.

Schmitz and his managers claim to have taken the usual measures against abuse and online piracy, similar to the Google video service YouTube. The US investigators, on the other hand, accuse the Megaupload operators of not only tolerating the practice, but also favoring it and profiting from it.

Last but not least: Male discrimination

A promotional video for the children's aid organization Plan plays only when a woman is standing in front of the billboard. Men see only a link to the Plan website.

The men are thus to experience what it means to be excluded. Women, on the other hand, enjoy a 40-second film. This shows three 13-year-old girls from Great Britain, Mali and Thailand who talk about their lives. Under the slogan "Girls Only", the campaign aims to draw attention to the restrictions on women in many parts of the world.

This is made possible by an HD camera with facial recognition installed at a bus stop on London's Oxford Street. The campaign costs around 35'000 euros and is to run for two weeks.

On the website Plan-uk.org you can see the film in full length - also for the poor, discriminated men.

Last but not least: Ambiguous plush object

What do we have here? Is this object really a huge, cuddly plush penis, the likes of which we can't even imagine?

No, we give the all-clear: It's just a dog, a normal, cute, living dog. According to Bild.de, the photo is currently being circulated thousands of times on the Internet. Because it is so beautifully ambiguous. The dog will probably not notice anything of all the hullabaloo about his little self - and will continue to take a nap à la Phallus from time to time. He is right.

Gentle relaunch for Tele Südostschweiz

Tele Südostschweiz is giving its look a fresh new look. This Wednesday, February 22, 2012, the revamped visual identity will go on the air.

The in-house designers worked on the new look for around six months in collaboration with the TV production company SO Emotion, as detailed in a press release. Dozens of new advertising bumpers and program tips were animated and set to music. Their motto is: Elements from the mountain world. Hissing fog, rumbling landslides and spraying water fountains run through the graphic elements.
All countdown animations, which show when the next program will appear, have also been revised. Not only have they been visually and acoustically spiced up, the texts are also new: "The weather follows" doesn't really whet the appetite for more. For this reason, a total of over 100 new information texts have been created for each program, which are displayed alternately before the broadcast. One example: "It's going to be bright and beautiful... when weather presenter Andrea Berry appears on screen. We can't do anything about the rest of the forecast". Additional music was created for each countdown animation, based on the program's signet. Over 20 pieces of music had to be rearranged for this.

The appearance of the weather and news programs has been slightly adapted. In particular, more space has been given to the background images, the so-called 'macros', in the news.

TSO new on Wilmaa.com

TSO is also the first licensed regional broadcaster to be available on Wilmaa.com. The news for the cantons of Graubünden and Glarus as well as all other broadcasts can now be followed live anywhere on the internet. In the course of the year, the revised homepage will also go live, and work is already underway on an app.

Euro RSCG Zurich: Campaign created for Swiss Post International

Swiss Post International is now launching a new expertise campaign for its B2B division, developed by Euro RSCG Zurich.

While the former brand campaign previously focused symbolically on the company's values, the new campaign is aimed very specifically at the services of Swiss Post International and its employees. In the two new motifs "Rubik's Cube" and "Chess", the campaign communicates how employees tackle every international shipping task, no matter how complex, and always find the best solution.

The campaign starts immediately. The subjects will be used internationally in various special interest magazines, as posters at trade fairs and as online banners. For the first time, a floating banner will also be used on the Financial Times homepage, presenting the "Rubik's Cube" subject in animated form.

Responsible at Swiss Post International: Domenico Pereira (Head of Communication), Therese Leibinn (Brand Management). Responsible at Euro RSCG Zurich: Alexander Holtz, Tom Seinige (CD), Wolfgang Bark, Tim Boin (text), Marietta Albinus, Tom Schicker (AD), Anne-Marie Pappas, Martin Bettler (graphics), Cara-Anne Specker (art buying), Nicolas Baechtold (web project manager), Peter Schäfer (strategy), Walter Tagliaferri, Franziska Schmid, Milena Elias, Lucia Staub (consulting), Stephan Schacher (photographer), Frank Bodin (overall responsibility).

Share to grow further

OMD Switzerland is reaching its limits. In order to be able to grow further, it is splitting up its customers and will serve them in two separately managed subsidiaries in the future. A name change was also necessary: OMD Switzerland is now called Omnicom Media Group.

With a market share of around 22 percent of the Swiss media business, Switzerland's largest media agency OMD has been standing in its own way lately. "Some clients didn't even invite us to their pitches anymore because we were already handling one of their competitors," reported Chairman of the Board Peter Kettiger at yesterday's press conference. In other words, OMD, which has grown much faster than the Swiss advertising market over the past five years, has reached the limits of its growth in this country. But the Zurich agency is internationally networked and belongs to the advertising holding Omnicom, which has made provisions for such situations: Since 2005, Omnicom has been building up a second, worldwide media network alongside OMD with PHD . PHD - the three letters stand for the British founders Pattison, Horswell and Durden - therefore already opened its own Swiss branch at Thurgauerstr. 54 in Zurich last December (see also OMD strengthens with new brand). The office is thus the 74th PHD branch in now 63 countries. PHD Switzerland is headed by 44-year-old Dominik Hofstetter, who previously managed OMD's Sky unit. With Hofstetter, the entire twelve-strong Sky team, including almost 20 customers, is also moving to PHD. With one exception: Sky customer Apple is being transferred to OMD North because it does not fit into the PHD network for competitive reasons.

Sky team is a perfect fit for PHD

Hilary Jeffrey, president of PHD Europe, Middle East & Africa, said he was pleased that PHD can now offer customers in Europe "nationwide support." He said PHD is focused on providing clients with exceptionally creative and innovative media solutions. "The team in Switzerland is a perfect fit for our culture and philosophy and is an excellent addition to our network family," Jeffrey said. In addition, Hofstetter's team was already serving some international clients who are also with the PHD network (Peugeot and Citroën, for example).

OMD Switzerland becomes Omnicom Media Group

However, the launch of OMD's sister agency PHD necessitated a restructuring and a change of name: OMD Switzerland has been operating under the new name Omnicom Media Group since the beginning of the year. However, the ownership structure remains unchanged: 51.25 percent of the share capital remains in Swiss hands, the rest is international capital. The Omnicom Board of Directors also continues to consist of Peter Kettiger (Chairman), Geri Aebi and Matthias Kiess, while the Omnicom Executive Board consists of Manfred Strobl (CEO), Beat Krebs (COO) and Marion Wagner (CFO). However, Omnicom now has two public companies under its control, which it owns 100 percent: OMD AG, again with Strobl as CEO, and PHD with Exective Managing Director Hofstetter. Both companies are operationally independent, Kettiger emphasized, but they purchase services such as IT, purchasing, and accounting from Omnicom. "So they will operate separately in the market and will also compete with each other to some extent, but in the background they can still take advantage of the large purchasing volume or draw on certain specialists," Kettiger explained.

Is the separation of OMD and PHD strict enough?

The "trick" of launching a second agency in order to retain or gain competitors among clients can certainly work: The sister agencies m&m and mm&b in Glattbrugg have been practicing this successfully since the mid-1990s - but there with two CEOs who report separately to the board of directors of the m&m group. The situation is different at Omnicom: Strobl, who as OMD CEO should be Hofstetter's competitor, is at the same time as Omnicom CEO his superior. Hofstetter reports to him, not to the Board of Directors. Is the "Chinese Wall" between PHD and OMD really "tight" enough? Kettiger, Strobl and Hofstetter answer in the affirmative. And the Sky customers who are now switching to PHD seem to see it the same way. But whether Strobl's dual function will be appreciated by potential new customers remains to be seen.

PHD Switzerland among the top 10 agencies

Either way, the switch of OMD's Sky unit to PHD has consequences for the RECMA ranking, which previously showed a billing volume of EUR 422 million for OMD Switzerland. According to Hofstetter, PHD Switzerland will now deduct around EUR 100 million from this figure. According to the 2011 ranking, OMD thus remains the largest Swiss media agency, but is now closely followed by MediaCom with 301 million euros. Further down the list, however, there would be shifts, with PHD Switzerland coming in behind Mediaedge:cia (€102 million) in 8th place, ahead of the m&m Group with €79 million).
