Last but not least: Oh plastic bag!

Ubiquitous and international, disposable yet indestructible—the plastic bag epitomizes our global society. And now it’s making its way into the museum.

Whether cult or garbage, loved or frowned upon, it divides minds, polarizes and reflects our consumer behaviour. It reinforces status and identity, disrupts ecology, is collected lovingly or with environmental awareness, tells cultural history and is a current theme in art and design: the exhibition "Oh plastic bag!" opened at the Gewerbemuseum Winterthur on Saturday, June 2. For the first time in this interdisciplinary form, the exhibition shows over thirty international positions from contemporary art and design and at the same time tells selected cultural-historical, aesthetic and political plastic bag stories with collections from Germany and Switzerland. It is curated by Ida-Marie Corell and Susanna Kumschick.

Facebook users can vote on data policy and rights

Following protests by Facebook users against the planned changes to the privacy policy and terms of service, the world's largest online network has backed down. It is allowing its members to vote on the proposals.

Members would now have one week to cast their vote. This was announced by Facebook on Friday. The vote comes after more than 7,000 users submitted comments on plans published in mid-May. For the vote to be binding, however, at least 30 percent of all active registered users must participate in the vote - according to recent Facebook membership figures, that would be 270 million people. Facebook is using a special app for the vote. Voting will continue until June 8 at 6 p.m. Central European Summer Time.

Facebook's proposed changes, in addition to numerous clarifications and clarifications, include that some information could be retained longer than it is now. "We will retain data for as long as necessary to provide services to users and others," Facebook wrote. In its new proposals, Facebook has already partially addressed user comments, communications chief Elliot Schrage wrote in a blog post. In it, he also held out the prospect of further developing users' ability to help shape the rules. Facebook has repeatedly come into conflict with data protectionists and politicians over its handling of user information. (sda)

Second Swiss Media Forum on media, business and politics

The second Swiss Media Forum came to a close on Friday, with 340 participants from the media, business, and politics gathering at the KKL. The organizers gave the event a positive review.

"We heard inspiring presentations and had controversial discussions," said Forum President Andreas Binder. Highlights were the appearances by Jill Abramson, editor-in-chief of the New York Times, and Joschka Fischer, former German foreign minister. Abramson promoted the paywall, saying it was the only way to finance quality journalism online. Joschka Fischer warned of the dramatic consequences of Greece leaving the euro: politicians and the media had not yet recognized the seriousness of the situation. Fischer pleaded for a political union and a fiscal union, and he drew parallels with the USA, where individual states would have gone bankrupt in the 18th century if the federal government had not been founded to guarantee the solvency of the member states.

Poor quality of online media
In his speech at the Swiss Media Forum, Fischer warned politicians not to become dependent on the media like Christian Wulff. "If you ride up in the elevator with the Bild newspaper, you'll ride back down in the elevator with it," he said. He finds party journalism boring and considers the American Fox News channel, for example, to be a "propaganda channel". Politicians often overestimate the influence of the media, he said. "The media is important, but you can also win election campaigns against the majority of the media, as the red-green party in Germany proved in 2002." Fischer criticized the new media and social media. "I question whether politicians really need to be active on social media. It doesn't make them any better." The quality of journalism in the printed press is still significantly higher than on the Internet. "Take a look at the reader comments on online portals. People often just empty their stomachs." Fischer longs for the good old readers' letters page, which is managed by an editorial team. "Today, they only filter out what is unlawful."

The journalist as street musician
Fischer often feels sorry for journalists: "It used to be a respectable profession. Today, the journalist reminds me of a musician at the fair who plays the accordion and has to play the monkey at the same time." Fischer went on to say that it was devastating how the foreign editorial offices had been thinned out. Quality is suffering. "If there is a journalistic race to the bottom, then the quality of political debate and ultimately democracy will also suffer." This can already be seen in the Bundestag. There is no young politician in any party who primarily distinguishes themselves through their foreign policy expertise.

SFLB: Advertising that reaches 1.67 million households

Spillmann/Felser/Leo Burnett has developed a specialized campaign for regional free newspapers that highlights the benefits for advertisers at a glance. As a result, regional free newspapers can be found in approximately 1.67 million Swiss households.

This also makes the publications very interesting for advertisers. This is because the regional free newspapers are conveniently delivered to readers' homes past the stop-advertising sticker, SFLB said in a press release on the campaign.

The subjects can now be seen as banners and advertisements in the trade press, in the regional free newspapers and on Gratiszeitungen.ch.
