New Bernese online magazine is launched

On Friday afternoon, the new online magazine Journal B went live with its first articles. Under the sections “Politics,” “Culture,” and “Everyday Life,” the editorial team plans to post new articles from the city and region of Bern online every day.

Journal B is an exclusively online publication that features stories from the margins or behind the scenes
The creators announced on Friday morning that they wanted to showcase the news. The plans also include guest columns, audio, and video segments. The five-member editorial team selects topics based on subjective criteria. However, the stories should relate to the Bern area and take the interests of the online community into account. The "B" in the name stands for Bern, but also for "B-side," meaning background stories, said Editor-in-Chief Beat Kohler to the media. While daily news isn't ruled out at Journal B, it certainly isn't a focus.

Thanks to substantial grants from various foundations, Journal B’s launch is secured through the end of 2014. Future funding will be provided primarily through membership dues from the Berner Onlinemedien association, which serves as the magazine’s sponsoring organization. Advertising revenue and donations will also contribute to this funding. The board of the sponsoring association includes, among others, SP City Council member Thomas Göttin and former City Council member Urs Frieden (Greens). The initiative committee includes numerous cultural figures as well as representatives from the left-wing and Green camps.

However, the press release goes on to state that the journalists are politically independent and not bound to any particular ideology. According to the magazine, it aims to contribute to the diversity of opinion in the federal capital. The editor-in-chief is Beat Kohler, who previously worked for the Jungfrau Zeitung in the Bernese Oberland. (sda)

Apps with Love

Apps with Love helped shape the online magazine. The goal was to create an innovative online medium that is second to none in terms of design, functionality, and usability, the company said in a statement on Friday. Journal B is intended to stand out through its originality and memorable graphic elements, becoming a recognizable brand. To enhance the user experience, the project began with an analysis of reading behavior in a traditional newspaper. Apps with Love then translated these findings into a layout specifically optimized for display on smartphones, tablets, and desktops.

For the layout concept and design, the startup is working closely with designers Alice Kuhn and Manu Schibli of Malice Berlin. Their team has experience designing magazines and newspapers for print as well as for online media.

Blue Spirit creates new sujets for the Ersparniskasse Schaffhausen

Ersparniskasse Schaffhausen wants to highlight its close ties to the region and its people. It is doing so with new campaign themes as part of the rebranding launched in 2008.

Back then, it was important for the bank to prove its independence and demonstrate values such as trust, solidarity and reliability in the turbulent banking sector. The traditional financial institution would like to recall these values in a still challenging environment, Bluespirit said in a press release on Friday. In the current campaign, Ersparniskasse Schaffhausen is once again using poster and print motifs to dramatize the bank's proximity to the people and how it offers people in the region more opportunities - no matter how unusual these may be. It is increasingly targeting the private customer segment.

Advico Y&R and the comeback of Jörg Abderhalden

Thanks to Bifidus and Advico Y&R, former Swiss wrestling champion Jörg Abderhalden is giving it his all once again. He’s making a comeback under the motto «I can never have enough immunity.».

In the follow-up to the existing Bifidus advertising campaign, Jörg Abderhalden takes on a whole crowd of children, who of course do not bring him to the ground. As a successful former wrestler, Jörg Abderhalden still has enough strength - or rather defensive powers - to emerge victorious from this "fight".

The campaign created by Advico Y&R is now running in various print media

Gruner + Jahr International Media Sales markets new clients

In line with its growth strategy, Gruner+Jahr International Media Sales (IMS) has expanded its market position by adding new clients. Since mid-2012, the Swiss subsidiary has taken over the marketing of all titles published by Gruner+Jahr’s French subsidiary, Prisma Média.

These include Capital, Gala, Geo and Prima. IMS takes over the global marketing of the print and digital offerings of the entire portfolio of its subsidiary Gruner+Jahr Netherlands (Vogue; Jan and Glamour Holland). IMS is also strengthening its portfolio in the business and decision-maker titles segment with the marketing of Financial Times Deutschland FTD in all G+J offices.

By marketing additional G+J portfolios, the publisher is increasing its local market relevance and strengthening its offering for pan-European campaigns, according to a Gruner + Jahr press release. At the same time, this positioning takes into account the current brand development that international budgets are increasingly being awarded on a pan-European or global level and are less isolated to individual countries.

Murdoch broadcasting group BSkyB may continue to broadcast

The BSkyB broadcasting group, which is partly owned by Rupert Murdoch's US media group News Corp, will be allowed to continue broadcasting in the UK. Investigations into the wiretapping scandal surrounding News Corp. have not produced any evidence that BSkyB is also involved.

Sky is "fit and proper" to retain its broadcasting licenses, the media commission Ofcom declared on Thursday. Murdoch's media empire holds 39 percent of BSkyB. Employees of the former British Murdoch scandal newspaper News of the World are alleged to have tapped the answering machines of numerous celebrities and politicians and bribed police officers. In the wake of the scandal, Murdoch closed the newspaper without further ado.

Ofcom stated that there were no indications that Sky journalists were using similar methods to obtain exclusive news. However, the Media Commission is still investigating two cases in which Sky claims to have hacked email accounts. Ofcom also found no breaches at Murdoch's son James, who resigned as head of BSkyB in April. However, the commission criticized the former chief commercial officer of the News of the World for "his repeated failure to respond on his own initiative" to the scandal. (sda)
