Erdmannpeisker develops Smart Service motif

Smart is now offering its workshop customers a free and direct battery check. Just in time for the onset of winter, Erdmannpeisker has developed a key visual to promote the new service internationally.

The motif developed by CD Gabriel Peisker and his team demonstrates the performance of regularly maintained batteries in the usual striking way. It shows street basketball players at night, who would be in the dark without the powerful batteries from smart. The various national agencies use the key visual as a POS poster and also develop mailings, flyers and POS decorations based on it.

Press Council reprimands Weltwoche for Roma cover picture

The Press Council has upheld a complaint against *Die Weltwoche* regarding its controversial cover image on the topic of the Roma. The weekly newspaper suggests to its readers that the child pictured is involved in Roma-related crime. The Press Council did not, however, rule on the article itself.

The complaint was prompted by a front page of Weltwoche last April, which featured a small Roma boy pointing a pistol at the viewer. The picture with the caption "The Roma are coming: Raids through Switzerland" illustrated a report on Roma crime. The Central Council of German Sinti and Roma, a Bernese student and 41 co-signatories appealed to the Press Council. In its statement on Tuesday, the Press Council concluded that Weltwoche had not made the context in which the picture was taken visible.

The photo dates from 2008 and was taken at a landfill site on the outskirts of the Kosovan town of Gjakova. There was no reference to this on either the front page or the following pages, writes the Press Council. The newspaper should therefore have labeled the picture as a symbolic image.

Use in a "completely different context"

However, the weekly newspaper had not only omitted the declaration, but had also used the image in a "completely different context". In particular, the Press Council objected to the combination of image and text. In combination with the legends, the picture untruthfully suggested to the readership that the boy depicted was part of Roma criminality.

The ambivalence between the documentary and symbolic function of the image is particularly problematic. Weltwoche had argued that the picture symbolized the "connection between children, crime and neglect". In the Press Council's judgment, this interpretation is not "clearly evident" to the viewer - without knowledge of the background. According to the Press Council, Weltwoche "clearly goes too far" with the layout of the front page. The newspaper should have been careful not to extend the justified criticism of criminal tourists to "all Roma". The generalizing formulation "The Roma are coming" potentially portrays all Roma as criminals.

The picture sparked outrage and strong reactions in Switzerland, Germany and Austria. After several complaints of suspected racial discrimination were filed, the Zurich public prosecutor's office opened criminal proceedings against Weltwoche in June, but discontinued them a month later on the grounds that the Roma were not being disparaged as a people. The Vienna public prosecutor's office also closed a similar investigation against Weltwoche in July.

Clou: Online campaign for Melchsee-Frutt

To mark the upcoming opening of the new Melchsee-Frutt gondola, the Lucerne-based agency Clou has launched an online campaign. Users can virtually fill gondolas with friends.

In mid-December, the new gondola lift connecting the Stöckalp valley station with the Melchsee-Frutt mountain station will go into operation. The old, four-seater gondolas will make way for 30 modern cabins, each of which can seat 15 people (at least on paper, editor's note) and reach the destination much faster. The ski and hiking area in central Switzerland is using the conversion phase between the end of the summer and beginning of the winter season to communicate the advantages of the new, expensive lift, including the new bottom and top stations. The Lucerne agency Clou, which was commissioned to do this, has developed a Website which allows virtual filling of gondolas with friends. The fellow passengers are informed via mail and Facebook invited to board the gondola. Whoever fills the gondola within 24 hours will secure one of 300 day passes for themselves and all passengers. To ensure that the competition remains attractive afterwards, all filled gondolas will take part in the final draw, in which all occupants of the winning cabin will each receive a season ticket.

The viral effect is intended to promote the new gondola and increase awareness of the Melchsee-Frutt tourist region, as Clou writes. Attractive prizes and the low effort for the participants would create an ideal incentive. Advertisements, hanging boxes and TV spots will also draw attention to the competition outside the Internet. Facebook will be used, but is not a requirement for contest participation. The agency is pleased to report that within four hours, 20 of the 370 gondolas opened had already been filled, and after two days, 250 of 1500. The campaign ends on December 9, 2012. (hae)

Webguerillas revives Ricola's trademark

Who invented it? «Rii-co-laa!» The social media campaign «Your Life is a Hit!»—created by the Webguerillas agency—puts a new spin on the world-famous Ricola catchphrase.

The Ricola call was first set to music in 1993. It is one of the best-known acoustic trademarks, according to a media release. In various countries, the Ricola call has been integrated into television commercials: The saunas of Finland, for example, are also well known in Switzerland.

In order to bring this unique trademark to life for all fans and friends of the brand, Ricola is using an attention-grabbing social media campaign. Users can compose their own jingle step by step. Based on the information stored on the user's Facebook profile, an individual song is created.

Alphorn and groupies

Born in the 90s? From Naples? In the end, there would probably be a Ricola call as a Eurodance version with mandolin. Or maybe a Grisons native born in 1979? Then the user can look forward to a disco-funk version with alphorn! Various additional options are available: For example, Facebook friends can be called upon as virtual background singers. The song is also accompanied by an animated video in which groupies also appear. If you want to know what your own individual Ricola song sounds like, you can do so at the Ricola Facebook Fan Page under try out.

Ricola relies on social media

"The Ricola shout-out, which is customized according to the particular information on the user's Facebook profile, encompasses all age groups and thus conveys cross-generational fun with and about Ricola," says Janine Gauch, social media manager at Ricola. "Ricola has arrived on Web 2.0. We want to offer users a playful approach and at the same time give them the opportunity to find themselves in our brand."

With the campaign designed and implemented by Webguerillas, Ricola is consolidating its communication strategy: In addition to classic advertising, the traditional Swiss company is increasingly taking social media into account. From a technical point of view, the app uses the user's profile properties stored on Facebook as a matrix and generates an individual song from it. The finished song can be shared, downloaded and played again at any time.

Last but not least: Sandy, the orange advertising flood

When the flood comes, you should be well prepared. Blick.ch has taken precautions and organized a suitable Orange ad.

Hurricane Sandy announced itself prominently not only meteorologically, but also in the media. For days, trusted channels have been reporting how and why America will sink in the floods. Hajo Schumacher of the Berliner Morgenpost appropriately analyzed: "The horror came in super slow motion. Rarely before in the history of mankind did a catastrophe approach in such a predictable way."

Today, the state of emergency arrived on schedule. Oversized headlines allow for oversized advertising placements. It's good to be prepared - by pure chance, of course. Blick.ch placed a very large orange ad that not only matched the events on the other side of the pond visually, but also in terms of content. The slogan "Take what you need" would have passed as a motto for the "looters in Philadelphia" ("They use the chaos to enrich themselves"). With such a direct invitation, the question "Are there more to come?" is also superfluous." (hae)

Gemi: Adscreen continues to soar

Advertising pressure is on the rise in the TV, Internet, and electronic media sectors. Adscreen remains the frontrunner, continuing its unbroken upward trajectory. This is shown by the latest Goldbach Index (Gemi) for advertising pressure in the overall market and in electronic media.

Adscreen gained another 23 points compared to the previous month and continues its unbroken rise with a total of 608 (585) index points. "The ad screen genre is benefiting from two forces: on the one hand, the general trend towards moving images and, on the other, the emergence of powerful, high-reach networks. Agencies and clients are slowly becoming aware of these networks and are incorporating them into the media mix as an effective addition to existing campaigns," says Dani Hess, Head of Digital Out-of-Home Goldbach Media (Switzerland), explaining the ongoing positive development.

The TV sector also recorded an increase with 604 (602) and the Internet with 652 (649) index points, as well as the electronic media with 607 (605) index points. The radio and teletext sectors suffered slight losses. Radio fell by two points to 416 (418) index points, while teletext lost three points to 88 (91) index points. The overall market reached 236 index points in September, which corresponds to a loss of one point compared to the previous month.

Audience Council: "Schawinski" continues to polarize

The Audience Council had a heated discussion about the talk show «Schawinski,» noting that it thrives on its host and his polarizing style. Overall, the show is described as fast-paced and confrontational. However, the discussions lack depth.

According to the broadcasting concept, Roger Schawinski invites "leading exponents from politics and business to his talk show for a committed, controversial and well-founded discussion". Since the start of the talk format just over a year ago, the Audience Council has noticed an expansion in the range of guests, according to a press release. People from the fields of culture, sport and show business are increasingly being invited. Some Council members welcome this development, while others feel that the opening up of the program is diluting its profile. A majority of the Council regrets that practically no women are invited or accept the invitation. "Schawinski" is a fast-paced, intense and aggressive program, which is well received by many Council members. For other Council members, Schawinski races through the talk, which means that the discussions often remain on the surface.

High level of expertise

The introduction to the talk with the question "Who are you?" goes down well with the audience members. The question has become a brand. A majority of Council members attest to talk show host Roger Schawinski's high level of expertise, good preparation and unmistakable interview style. Schawinski always strives to show the person behind the facts. In this sense, he does not offer his guests a platform to present their achievements, but rather scratches the surface. However, some Council members would like the presenter to engage more with his interviewees. At times, the impression of questioning and confrontation with theses and assertions was created.

Old quotes

The Audience Council is divided over recordings and photos in the program. Some Council members see them as an asset and a welcome change, for others they dominate the talk too much. They are also annoyed by the fact that some of the quotes shown are from many years ago. The references to the "Club" or "Literature Club" at the end of the program are seen as a foreign element. They came unexpectedly and brought the conversation to an abrupt end. The talk show's website is clearly laid out and offers the most important information, including the opportunity to watch missed programs.

Valencia: Communication for "Simsalawin

Following the «Big Win» promotion, Coop plans to surprise its customers once again with the "Simsalawin" sweepstakes. The Valencia agency is handling the communications for the campaign.

With "Simsalawin," Coop is this time offering its customers a sweepstakes in which dreams come true, according to a statement. The trick: customers can decide for themselves what they want to win. Each week, Coop is offering three weekly prizes for customers to choose from, on which they can place their winning codes online, according to their personal taste. These include prizes such as a visit to the Oscars in Hollywood. In addition, a grand prize of 500'000 Swiss francs in cash is raffled off among all participants.

Valencia Kommunikation gave this competition the appropriate name "Simsalawin" and the corresponding visual. This was implemented three-dimensionally and is thus animated to magical effect in the TV spot. In addition to the usual communication advertising media at the POS, 3D columns and F4 posters are used specifically for the communication of the weekly prizes at the POS. "Simsalawin" will run from October 29 to December 1, 2012 at Coop, Coop Bau + Hobby, Coop City and Coop@home.

Responsible at Coop: Thomas Schwetje (Head of Marketing/Services), Sacha Zuberbühler (Head of Advertising), Sibille Berger (Project Manager), Karin Heliopoulos (Head of Media), Stephan Küng (TWMedia). Coundco: Online campaign for Raiffeisen

Last but not least: When the letter carrier rings twice

In a commercial, Media Markt Germany subtly alludes to the universally popular Zalando «Scream» campaign. Although «subtly» is a flexible term (as is “popular,” by the way).

The Media Markt campaign, created by Ogilvy & Mather Frankfurt, depicts the everyday life of a tech-obsessed shared apartment in a sitcom-style series of episodes (laughs included). The slogan holds its own against previous Media Markt taglines: «Crazy people out there, welcome to the price.» For example, the residents play Pac-Man with a robot vacuum cleaner:

You can watch all the episodes on the Ogilvy Germany's YouTube channel Watch them. Almost all of them. Not the best one (yet). It would be obvious that this is a reference to the Zalando “Schrei” campaign if the delivery person weren’t handing over an actual Zalando package with the corresponding print. However, this time the men have reason to cheer, too, because the bearer of the good news has also brought along a huge number of Media Markt packages.

The clip can be viewed at Horizon.net be viewed. The agency has certainly obtained all the necessary rights from Zalando—otherwise, there might be accusations that Ogilvy & Mather had draws on other people's ideas. (hae)
