Imprint dismayed by layoffs at Le Temps

Le Temps is laying off staff to save money. This has now been officially announced by the publishing house. The journalists' association is dismayed by the decision.

This threatens to severely weaken the newspaper's capacity and thus its quality, according to a press release issued by Impressum on Wednesday. The collective labor agreement (CCT de la Presser Romande) stipulates that staff must be consulted in the event of economic redundancies in order to propose alternative measures. If more than five employees are affected, a social plan is also required, which must be negotiated with Impressum (Art. 10 CCT). The Journalists' Association is prepared to enter into negotiations in close cooperation with the Editorial Board and the Staff Committee.

According to SDA, the director of Le Temps, Valérie Boagno, announced on Tuesday on RTS radio in French-speaking Switzerland that the newspaper would be laying off staff. It is still unclear how many people and which areas of the company will be affected.

News agencies AP and dpa agree on cooperation

The U.S. news agency Associated Press (AP) and the DPA (Deutsche Presse-Agentur) agreed to a partnership on Wednesday. Going forward, DPA will market AP articles and photos in Germany and Austria and will also offer AP articles to customers in German-speaking Switzerland.

These rights were previously held by DAPD Media Holding, which was renamed HQTA in mid-October. The latter had ceded the rights for German-speaking Switzerland to the news agency SDA. The AP image rights for Switzerland are held by
of the Keystone photo agency.

The French agency Sipa, which also belongs to HQTA, owns the rights to AP services in French-speaking Switzerland. It announced the closure of the French-speaking Swiss office at the end of October. At the same time, the AP will be given the opportunity to use DPA texts and images for its own reporting. The cooperation is to begin on January 1, 2013. (SDA)

Skype investigates reports of security vulnerability

Following reports of a security vulnerability, the online communication service Skype has disabled the password reset feature. Russian hackers had previously published instructions online on how to hijack other people's Skype accounts using only their email addresses.

The password reset function played a central role in this. The matter is currently being investigated, the Microsoft-owned service explained on Wednesday.

According to the latest figures, Skype has over 250 million active customers. The service allows users to call and text each other over the Internet. Microsoft bought Skype for around 8.5 billion dollars (Werbewoche.ch reported) and is currently making the service the central communication platform in the Windows world. (SDA)

Last but not least: Advertisers launch the "other" children's book

Ludek Martschini (illustrations) and Andreas Troxler (text), both of whom run their own advertising agencies in Lucerne, want to launch a «different» children’s book. They are looking for 150 supporters for this project.

The story revolves around a clumsy horndog. He leaves home when he accidentally knocks over a bucket of water. There is a shortage of water in the village. So his mishap is all the worse. Not his first. After another incident, he decides not to be a burden to anyone and leaves home. In the nearby forest, he encounters the cheeky little fellow, who sets a trap for him. They become friends and set out to solve the mysterious riddle of the great drought in the village.

The book is to be financed via crowdfunding and supporters who each support the project with 50 francs. They need 150 supporters, i.e. 7,500 francs for an initial print run of 300 copies. Anyone who would like to support the two can do so on their website, among other places, and will receive an invitation to the vernissage with a culinary feast and live drawing by Ludek Martschini, as well as a limited edition of the children's book "Hornochs & Frechdachs" when the project is realized. Potential printing and publishing partners are currently being evaluated.

The project is also linked to Facebook. Interested parties can also support the children's book by purchasing a Hornochs supporter T-shirt. The exact design will follow. But if you've always wanted to stroll through the Christmas shopping zones with a newly created design on your clothes, it will look something like this:

Ringier Axel Springer Media rejects accusations against Blic

Ringier Axel Springer Media's Serbian media outlets, particularly the daily newspaper Blic and its staff, have faced allegations in recent weeks. The owner and publisher of the daily newspaper Blic rejects the allegations leveled against the paper.

The editorial staff of Blic under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief Veselin Simovic meets the strict journalistic standards of Ringier Axel Springer Media and is exemplary for critical, independent journalism in Serbia and editorial integrity. This is what Ringier Axel Springer Media wrote on Presseportal.ch on Wednesday. There is no influence of advertisers on the editorial reporting of Blic.

Allegations to the contrary are groundless. They would be aimed at intimidating an independent medium. "Blic will resist these attempts with the full backing of Ringier Axel Springer Media and its shareholders and will continue to defend the European standards of a free press in the future," the statement continued. The currently observable reluctance of state and semi-state advertisers will not change anything in this regard. In this context, Ringier Axel Springer recalls the high value of press freedom in the European community of values. It appeals to all those responsible in Serbia to settle political disputes with the power of argument and not with economic or personal repression.

UPC Cablecom: Basic encryption lifted

All households served by UPC Cablecom now have free access to digital television. This is because the cable network operator lifted the basic encryption on Wednesday.

In addition, UPC Cablecom is now also making an Internet connection with 2 Mbit/s available to cable connection customers who do not yet have an Internet subscription. This was announced by the cable network operator in a press release on Wednesday. The "Mini" offer has also been significantly upgraded: more than 100,000 subscribers now have 70 instead of 55 TV channels to choose from and also benefit from various additional functions.

On October 16, 2012, Cablecom announced that it would remove basic encryption for digital television as of January 1, 2013 (Werbewoche.ch reported). As the technical preparations have now progressed faster than planned, the new service is being introduced with immediate effect, the cable network operator continued in the press release. This means that all 1.8 million households now have access to the new basic digital service.

Koller Internet becomes Webstobe

Following the internal succession plan at Koller Internet in Appenzell at the end of 2011, the online agency is now rebranding. Despite its new identity, the agency continues to collaborate with its partner firm, Koller Werbung.

At Webstobe, everything revolves around the World Wide Web. "We are at home on the Internet. That's why the name Webstobe seems just right for what we do and where we work," says Paddy Gloor, owner of the agency, describing the idea behind the new brand.

Eight people with different specializations work at the Appenzeller Webstobe for clients from all over German-speaking Switzerland. They continue to be supported in terms of content and design by the Koller Werbung creative team.
