Dirty Angel: Freelancer and Ma.Ma.Pictures raise awareness for Greenpeace

The National Council elections are just around the corner. Greenpeace, together with a team of freelancers and Ma.Ma.Pictures, is launching the «Drecksengel» campaign to highlight the urgency of climate and environmental protection.

4_Drecksengel_Keyvisual_1

On October 20, 2019, Switzerland will elect a new parliament - and thus has the opportunity to achieve a change of direction. Every citizen can have a say in who sits in the National Council and Council of States and what will be done in Switzerland in the future to protect the climate and the environment.

The Greenpeace campaign strikingly shows the consequences of climate change in Switzerland: A little girl lies on the ground and looks reproachfully into the camera, because she has to make her snow angel in the dirt.

In order to prevent this gloomy future scenario, the population is not only called upon to go to the polls, but is also offered concrete assistance in the posts of the spots, banners and stories: with a reference to the online election aid Ecorating.ch. Here, voters can see which parties and candidates are actually committed to environmental concerns.

Advertising month of September weakens year-on-year

In September, advertising spend in the Swiss advertising market totaled 641.2 million Swiss francs (gross), representing a slight decline compared to the same month last year. Nevertheless, September was the third-strongest month of the current year in terms of advertising spend.

statistik-analysieren

Only in the months of March and May was more invested in advertising. Cumulatively over the first three quarters, advertising print stands at 5283.8 million gross francs and is thus still slightly up on 2018 (+2.2%).

Telco sector pushes ahead of pharma & healthcare

The financial sector was responsible for the highest advertising expenditure (gross) of all sectors in September. As a result, it is holding off the runner-up Construction, Industry, Furnishings in the year to date (YTD), but the gap to the second-placed services sector also remains large.

The top sector Leisure, Catering, Tourism was responsible for the second-highest gross power print in September, thereby consolidating its lead in the annual ranking. Of the top 3 sectors, only Leisure, Catering, Tourism was able to increase its value compared with the same month last year. The service industry (-8.5%) as well as the financial industry (-10.3%) decrease the advertising pressure, compared to September 2018.

The only castling within the industry rankings YTD took place in September between Pharma & Health and Telecom.

Federal elections make themselves felt

The biggest increase compared with the same month last year was in political campaigns in September. This was to be expected in view of the upcoming parliamentary elections on October 20. With the FDP and SVP candidates for the National Council, two representatives of initiatives & campaigns are also among the ten most advertised products of the month.

Looking at the percentage increase in advertising pressure YTD, political campaigns are in second place. Still ahead is the tobacco industry, whose representatives increasingly promoted e-cigarettes in the summer months of this year.

Three industries provide high advertising pressure

In addition to initiatives & campaigns, the vehicle sector also accounts for two of the top 10 products, with the Peugeot 3008 SUV Leasing and the Toyota Corolla Hybrid. Also generating particularly high advertising pressure in September were two telecommunications products, Swisscom Business Solutions and the M-Budget Mobile Maxi subscription. These made a decisive contribution to the telecommunications sector narrowly overtaking Pharma & Health.

Media mix

The integration of Search data, Desktop (January 2017) and Mobile (July 2017) into the Media Focus advertising statistics has led to a significant increase in the share of Internet in the media mix. Since January 2018, Search data has also been collected for French-speaking Switzerland (Search share: 85% DE/15% FR).

Swisscom wins Clear Channel's Digital Out-of-Home Award

For the first time, Clear Channel is honoring the best digital out-of-home campaign. The winner is Swisscom with its «Speed» campaign.

Award

Over the past year, around 350 campaigns were viewed and evaluated according to the criteria of message, creative idea and use of the medium. This resulted in a shortlist of 15 campaigns.

The jury, consisting of Christoph Marty, Diego Quintarelli, Kathrin Petrow and Anna Wierdemann from Clear Channel, headed by brand expert Markus Gut from Farner, selected the winner. The most convincing campaign was Swisscom's "Speed" campaign, conceived and implemented by Serviceplan.

Markus Gut from Farner on the winning campaign: "The campaign is a deserved winner of the Digital Out-of-Home Award 2019. The digital posters make skilful use of the technical possibilities. For example, the subjects match the locations and the animation visually shows the benefits of the offer. In addition, the campaign is attractively implemented in terms of image and layout."

Domino's celebrates Walter White's unforgettable pizza toss

The «Breaking Bad» sequel «El Camino» premiered on Netflix on Friday. Domino’s Pizza capitalized on this momentum and is celebrating Walter White’s unforgettable pizza toss with a promotional campaign that’s a little out of the ordinary.

gut-saolocation-1

Anyone who has seen "Breaking Bad" can certainly remember this scene: After a frustrating conversation with his wife Skyler, Walter White, the main character of the series, throws the XXL pizza he brought with him onto the roof of his house in a rage and with a lot of momentum. The fact that this scene was in the can after the first take doesn't make it any less amazing.

To honor this memorable moment in the series' history as well as the film release of "El Camino," Domino's Pizza São Paulo set up a scavenger hunt. Pizza boxes and their contents were placed on the roofs of various Domino's branches for pizza fans to find and photograph.

If the picture was uploaded to Instagram with the hashtag #Saymyname - another Walter White reference - the winner would win free pizza for an entire year.

gut-saopaulo-location-0

The Gut São Paulo agency is responsible for implementing the advertising campaign. "For a brand, the most important thing is to be part of pop culture," says Bruno Brux, Executive Creative Director at Gut São Paulo. "That doesn't mean that the brand has to participate everywhere - but certainly in those points that have to do with the brand itself. And that's what we tried to do with our campaign for Domino's."

Zug affair: Weltwoche author acknowledges verdict

Philipp Gut, deputy editor-in-chief of Weltwoche, has decided not to appeal a ruling by the Zurich High Court to the Federal Supreme Court. He is therefore guilty of multiple counts of defamation at the expense of the former Green cantonal councillor in Zug, Jolanda Spiess-Hegglin.

bezirksgericht-gut

Following the Zurich District Court, the Zurich High Court also found Gut guilty of defamation in mid-June (Werbewoche.ch reported). Gut had written that the former Zug cantonal councillor Jolanda Spiess-Hegglin had only made up the alleged defilement by SVP cantonal councillor Markus Hürlimann in order to cover up her infidelity.

The High Court sentenced Gut to a conditional fine of 60 daily rates of CHF 130 each with a probationary period of two years. Gut must also pay Spiess-Hegglin CHF 2,500 in satisfaction and compensation for her legal fees.

The higher judges therefore confirmed the district court's ruling from May 2017, finding that Gut did not have sufficient evidence to support his claim. The Weltwoche-The author always claimed that his article was correct and factual. He had good sources and stuck to the core statements of the text.

Nevertheless, he has now decided not to appeal to the Federal Supreme Court. This was reported by various CH Media publications on Tuesday. A spokesperson for the Zurich High Court confirmed to the Keystone-SDA news agency that the ruling became legally binding on October 2. (SDA)

How to counteract odors with statistics

With clever graphics, WWP Turkey is waging a war on bad odors in its print campaign for Febreze.

febreze_egg_ads

In the simple and expressive campaign for Febreze, WPP Turkey made use of statistics. Three "odor diagrams" are used to explain the effects of bad smells on human behavior. According to the diagram, bad smells have a negative influence on our memory and affect our good mood. In addition, we move away more quickly when a place smells bad.

The usual pie chart was replaced with less appetizing alternatives for this campaign. Moldy cheese, old eggs and onions represent the explained facts visually correct. Despite the "stinky" message, a successful campaign.

Kind regards for SolidarMed: Cooperation that works

In a comprehensive rebranding process, Freundliche Grüsse revised the corporate identity, website, donation magazine and claim for the Swiss aid organization SolidarMed.

1_SolidarMed_PM_Uebersicht

The Swiss aid organization SolidarMed improves basic medical care in rural Africa by working with the population. In various workshops, Freundliche Grüsse worked with the NGO to develop a new brand positioning and revise the corporate identity. The aim was to position the NGO, which is known to a rather small target group, more clearly and to prepare it for future, digital challenges.

In the flood of broad NGO communication in Switzerland, smaller companies often get lost. Through a collaborative process, the new visual identity was formed. Whether in Switzerland or on the ground in Africa, the red triangle creates a bracket that runs through all of SolidarMed's communication and sets the brand apart from other players.

With the development of a positioning paper and corporate purpose, the aid organization can also clearly distinguish itself in terms of content. The new claim "Cooperation that works" unites SolidarMed's corporate values, methodology and positioning and will be used in campaign communication in the future.

Two zombies have the best day of their "life"

All I want to do is have a little fun before I die—again. DDB New Zealand has created a commercial for Lemon & Paeroa that depicts a not-quite-normal day in the life—or rather, non-life—of two zombie friends.

Meanwhile-in-New-Zealand...-0-34-screenshot

At the latest since Michael Jackson and all the zombie blockbusters, series and video games that have been presented to us in recent years, we know: Zombies are brainless, will-less, vicious and dangerous creatures that have little to do with the human they once were.

For Lemon & Paeroa, DDB New Zealand has for once not fallen back on zombie stereotypes and - with music by Sheryl Crow - shown that the former humans can have a little fun after all.

With the campaign, DDB New Zealand wants to show that Lemon & Paeroa is "refreshingly different" - and can even reawaken the zest for life in the undead.

The campaign is running in New Zealand on TV, cinema and social media. The film was produced by Sweetshop and directed by Damien Shatford.

Internet: Streaming is kids' favorite hobby

Half of Swiss children under 14 use the Internet, and every fourth child surfs daily. As part of the "NET-Metrix-Base Trend" study, the Internet usage of 0- to 13-year-olds in Switzerland was examined.

people-2564425_1280

As part of an online survey, around 4,000 people provided information on how the children in their household use the Internet. Data was collected on around 1,500 children.

The older, the more intensively online

Not surprisingly, teenagers are more active on the web than toddlers. While 91 percent of 10- to 13-year-olds are online, 15 percent of 0- to 4-year-olds are as well. Among kindergarten and primary school children (5- to 9-year-olds), 53 percent surf the Internet at least occasionally.

Every fourth child surfs daily or almost daily. But the proportion of frequent Internet users also increases with age: while only 10 percent of children up to age 8 surf the Internet daily, 39 percent of children aged 9 to 11 and 73 percent of young people aged 12 to 13 are daily Internet users.

Streaming, search engine usage and games

Streaming is the preferred activity online: 67 percent of young Internet users watch videos on the Web (for example, on YouTube), watch TV online or listen to music online.

52 percent of Web kids research information in search engines. Among 10- to 13-year-olds in particular, using search engines is their main activity on the Internet (78 percent). Online games round out the top 3: Half of young Internet users like to play games on the Net.

Tablet remains most popular

While adults prefer the smartphone, the tablet remains the most popular device among children: It is used by 54 percent of young Internet users to surf the Web. Smartphones are mainly used by older children: 70 percent of children who use a smartphone are at least 10 years old.

The NET Metrix Base provides basic data on the number and structure of Internet users. It includes sociodemographic characteristics, information on Internet user groups, locations and frequency of Internet use, and use of various types of offerings on the Internet, etc. Since 2013, trend stuein with variables on the use of mobile devices, streaming offers, social media, online shopping and online gaming have been collected.

For the study, around 19,000 online and telephone interviews are conducted annually in private households in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

On Your Way In No Time - Fortunately

Unpleasant encounters, social contrasts—in its commercials for the Copenhagen Metro, the Danish agency Hjaltelin Stahl humorously captures everything we recognize from our own daily experiences with public transportation.

Hurtigt-videre...-dagen-derpå-0-38-screenshot

The 17 new stations on the Danish capital's metro network will significantly increase the number of daily commuters - and thus the likelihood of running into a celebrity, or indeed someone less popular, such as your ex.

However, there are numerous other unpleasant scenarios in public transport. In the Danish agency's spots, you don't have to understand Danish to know what's going through the young woman's mind, for example, when she sits down - (more or less) fresh from the exit - in the middle of a loud and motivated group of scouts.

In such situations, you only want one thing: to get out of here fast! And therein lies the core message of the advertising campaign: "Fortunately, you'll be on your way soon." With only a few minutes between stops, you'll be at your destination in no time. Let's hope for the best!

Swiss Club for Science Journalism with new board of directors

Angelika Jacobs of Keystone-SDA and Martin Amrein of NZZ am Sonntag form the new co-presidency of the Swiss Club for Science Journalism SKWJ. On September 27, they were elected to head the association at the General Assembly in Bern.

amrein_skwj

Climate change, 5G, animal testing - topics related to science are more present than ever. That's why it's essential for media companies to employ specialized journalists who bring expertise to the table.

"Science journalism has to do more than just convey knowledge," says Angelika Jacobs from the science department of the Keystone-SDA news agency. "While research institutions and researchers themselves are very active in communicating and imparting knowledge, it is the job of journalists to research in the interest of the public and to critically illuminate topics from different angles," adds Martin Amrein, science editor at the "NZZ am Sonntag".

The two journalists form the renewed board of the SKWJ, which aims to promote independence and quality in science journalism in Switzerland. "In times when editorial offices are being downsized and communications departments are being expanded, this is particularly important," says Amrein.

The SKWJ board wants to face the structural change in the media realistically and with foresight. "Media contributions on scientific topics have long since come not only from science departments," says Jacobs. In the future, the club therefore also wants to increasingly involve media professionals from other departments who are regularly confronted with science topics.

Amrein and Jacobs replace Olivier Dessibourg, deputy editor-in-chief of Heidi.news, after seven years as SKWJ president. Most recently, Dessibourg headed the organizing committee of the World Conference on Science Journalism in Lausanne. Huma Khamis from the French-speaking Swiss radio station RTS was elected as the new vice president. Moreover, with Arian Bastani, a freelance journalist is now once again represented on the board, which consists of seven people.

Founded in 1974, the association now has around 380 members. In addition to journalists, the SKWJ also includes associate members from the communications sector.
