Yahoo gains thanks to the search engine

After a long period of stagnation, Yahoo's business is slowly picking up under its new CEO, Marissa Mayer. Fourth-quarter revenue rose 2 percent to $1.35 billion.

One reason was higher revenues from the search engine; by contrast, revenues from graphic advertising shrank slightly. Profits, meanwhile, fell by 8 percent year-on-year to $272 million on balance due to the costs of the ongoing corporate restructuring.

She was proud of what she had achieved, Marissa Mayer said on Monday (local time) at the company's headquarters in Sunnyvale, California. For the year as a whole, she said, it was the first time in four years that Yahoo had increased its revenue.

With its business figures, the internet cornerstone exceeded analysts' expectations. After trading hours, the share price rose by more than 3 percent. In the past, Yahoo had often disappointed. That is why the board of directors had poached the model manager Mayer from rival Google in the middle of last year. She wants to make Yahoo one of the top addresses in the Internet business again. To this end, she has gathered a team of new managers around her, closed unprofitable areas and wants to bind users to Yahoo again with new services. The group also owns the photo platform Flickr. Publicitas and SWA: "Advertising Barometer Switzerland

The findings from the first wave of the «Swiss Advertising Barometer» suggest that the advertising market will remain stable in the first half of 2013. The «Swiss Advertising Barometer» is an initiative of SWA and Publicitas.

Around one-third of Swiss advertisers plan to increase their advertising investments (above the line) in the first half of 2013 compared with the second half of 2012. Likewise, one-third expect to reduce their media spending. At the same time, the results point to continuing budget shifts between the individual media types. However, the stabilization is being driven by very different investment trends within the individual media types. While the online advertising channel (display, search, classified) with 67 index points and cinema with 59 points can expect a positive investment mood, print media with 39 points and radio with 37 points have to reckon with a negative mood. However, the dynamics behind these trends can only be assessed in a time comparison with the second wave of the "Advertising Barometer Switzerland," which will go into the field in summer 2013.

In addition to spending on the media types mentioned, the "Advertising Barometer Switzerland" also records advertising investment below the line. With an index value of 54, positive investment sentiment can also be observed for this advertising area at the beginning of 2013.

The "Advertising Barometer Switzerland" is a joint initiative of the Swiss Advertising Clients Association SWA and Publicitas. The barometer is intended to serve as an instrument for the industry to be able to continuously record investment sentiment among advertising clients in Switzerland. "The results of the "Advertising Barometer Switzerland" supplement the existing data on the Swiss advertising market with prognostic information that allows advertising-financed media in particular to reduce planning uncertainty," says Mirko Marr, project manager of "Advertising Barometer Switzerland" Publicitas. The "Advertising Barometer Switzerland" adds value to the advertising market, says Roland Ehrler, Director of SWA.

The findings of the "Advertising Barometer Switzerland" are based on a survey of a standing panel of a total of 40 advertising clients, who together account for around a quarter of gross advertising spending in Switzerland. The survey covers the actual net advertising spend in the previous semester and the forecast net figures for the following semester. The current and first survey was conducted in December 2012. The "Advertising Barometer Switzerland" uses a diffusion index to calculate investment sentiment. This index expresses the ratio of advertising clients increasing, decreasing or leaving their advertising budgets unchanged, and thus indicates the direction of an expected change. Index values above 50 indicate a positive development, index values below 50 a negative development.

Last but not least: Counter-publicity to television

85-year-old cabaret artist Dieter Hildebrandt wants to explore new avenues on the Internet. His project, Stoersender.tv, is set to go live in March.

According to Hildebrandt, he wants to create a counter-public to television with the half-hour programs. "I have said goodbye to television," he told the daily newspaper Neues Deutschland, according to SDA. The internet gives him the opportunity to act more freely and independently. "You can see that something is emerging that leaves the beaten track." Together with journalist Stefan Hanitzsch, he has already raised seed capital of 125,000 euros. In addition, colleagues such as Georg Schramm, Frank-Markus Barwasser alias Erwin Pelzig and Gerhard Polt are said to have already pledged their support.

The German comedy scene in a mixture of comedy, corny jokes and criticism, "mature and crazy", will soon no longer have to be laboriously collected on Youtube.com, but can be found with concentrated power on Stoersender.tv. (uma)

ADC "Evergreen": Honoring two great campaigns

On Saturday, the ADC’s new «Evergreen» cubes were awarded for the first time. Like gold, the award is worth seven points. Ruf Lanz and Wirz were honored to receive them.

Unlike the "conventional" ADC cubes, the "Evergreen" award stands not for individual creative ideas but for creative consistency over a longer period of time. A campaign must be based on the same central idea for at least three years and deliver correspondingly successful results in order to receive the new award. The agencies Ruf Lanz and Wirz were the first to receive the dice for the campaigns Die Mobiliar and VBZ. Both campaigns have been running successfully for years, are anchored in people's minds and have left a lasting mark on the client's image.

"Not so pleased since the first cube".

The VBZ campaign "Umsteigen lohnt sich" by Ruf Lanz has been running since 2002 and surprises with new creative ideas every year - in corporate communications, market communications and even in personnel marketing. According to Scope Qualitative Research, the campaign has corrected VBZ's image, which was previously perceived as dusty. Today, VBZ is perceived as a fresh, contemporary company and is regularly voted the most popular municipal institution. The VBZ advertisements are experienced by the public as humorous and innovative - some even collect them. Ruf Lanz accepted the "Evergreen" at the ADC Gala together with VBZ's Head of Corporate Communications, Heinz Vögeli.

Creative Director Markus Ruf's joy is correspondingly great. "Not since I won the first ADC cube in 1989 - the special text prize for a Swatch campaign - have I been so happy about a gold cube," Ruf told Werbewoche.ch. Over ten years of creative consistency, for which he thanks not only all the creatives involved, but also VBZ and its advertising manager Heinz Vögeli - for the "truly fruitful collaboration."

Cross-media damage sketches

The insurance campaign for Die Mobiliar, which has built up great popularity throughout Switzerland with its damage sketches, has been around even longer - 15 years, in fact. The basic concept, which Jean Etienne Aebi invented with the agency Aebi, Strebel in 1998, was then continued by Publicis and is now managed by Wirz, has outlasted three agencies. While at the beginning of the Aebi, Strebel and Publicis era the campaign was mainly played out in advertisements, on posters and on television, from 2005 onwards Wirz increasingly implemented a cross-media approach. In addition to 22 TV commercials, 226 ads and 181 posters (source: Wirz), the company also developed apps for iPhone and iPad or dressed Zurich streetcars with damage sketches. (hae)

Büro Troxler: Lozärner Beer vs. Eichhof

To mark the current occasion, Büro Troxler has developed a motif for Lozärner Bier, which confirms the intention of Lozärner Bier to produce its own brewery in Lucerne in the future.

Heineken Switzerland is relocating the bottling of Eichhof beer to Chur by the middle of the year. This news shocked beer drinkers in the Lucerne region on Wednesday. The reason for the move is to optimize the capacity utilization of the Chur bottling plants. At the same time, the Lozärner Bier microbrewery is looking for a suitable location for its own brewery in the canton of Lucerne.

It is currently produced in the canton of Bern in cooperation with Aare Bier in Bargen, according to a press release. This is set to change in the foreseeable future. "We have found two suitable water sources and are planning to relocate the brewery to the canton of Lucerne," says Daniel Stalder, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Lozärner Bier.

The agency Büro Troxler reacted quickly and realized these two facts as a caricature. With a wink, the aim is to indirectly strengthen the image of Lozärner Bier and win over new fans. The subject is only used on the Facebook channel of Lozärner Bier used. The subject was illustrated by Roger Landolt, with the idea and concept coming from Andreas Troxler.

Closure of the Baz printing plant definite

The closure of the Basler Zeitung's printing plant is now final: The board of directors made this decision following the conclusion of the consultation process, as the company announced on Monday. 72 employees will be laid off.

During the consultation process, no feasible proposals for the loss-free continuation of Zeitungsdrucker Schweiz were submitted, the statement said. The Board of Directors has therefore decided on the definitive closure of the Basler Zeitung Medien Group's printing plant as of March 31.

Affected are 96 employees of the printing plant as well as the staff restaurant at Hochbergerstrasse in Basel, which will also be closed. Eleven employees will be offered early retirement, while ten employees will be offered a job at the Tamedia printing center in Zurich, where the Basler Zeitung will be printed in the future. Three apprentices who will complete their apprenticeship in 2013 will also be taken on by the Tamedia printing center, the statement added. However, 72 employees will lose their jobs. A social plan is available to those affected, according to the statement (Werbewoche.ch reported). (SDA)
