Migros is the strongest brand in Switzerland

Brand Asset Valuator, Switzerland's most comprehensive brand study, surveys Swiss consumers about their perceptions of brands. The strongest brand in Switzerland in 2013 was Migros, followed by Toblerone and Google.

In addition to a contemporary understanding of brand communication, Migros' success goes hand in hand with a change in values among Swiss consumers toward more idealism. Status and materialism, on the other hand, are becoming less relevant, according to the survey. With the Club School, the Culture Percentage and nature parks, Migros assumes responsibility towards society and shows with the launch of Generation M that it also intends to do so in the future. Migros is thus bridging the gap between idealism and concrete action, and has been successful in doing so.

Within the top 20, brands of digital origin are shaking up the establishment; in addition to Google, Wikipedia and Microsoft Office are now also among the strongest brands in Switzerland. YouTube even makes it into the top 10 among the youngest consumers.

Overall, the top 20 continues to be dominated by traditional and quality Swiss brands such as Lindt, Rivella and Zweifel, which are represented by a total of 14 brands. With Swiss Post and SBB, two public-sector institutions are in the top 20 this year, the former again, the latter for the first time. Prominent drop-outs in 2013 include Nivea, Cailler and Ricola.

Changing values: The Swiss are becoming more idealistic

The Brand Asset Valuator not only evaluates brands, but also determines consumers' value attitudes. This results in seven psychographic consumer segments. According to the survey, reformers made significant gains this year. For them, the focus is on personal development and social awareness. Reformers prefer quality brands that stand for values and philosophies. Idealism is consequently gaining in importance.

This is also reflected in the study by the fact that statements such as "Money is the best measure of success" or "I admire people who can afford expensive cars and houses" lose significantly in agreement compared with 2011, while statements such as "I regularly pay more for environmentally friendly products" or "I avoid brands with low moral and ethical values" enjoy significantly higher agreement. The increase among reformers is at the expense of the materialistically oriented aspirers. Status is losing relevance in Switzerland.

bav3

This is shown by the results of the Brand Asset Valuators of Y&R Group Switzerland. Since 1995, 1,500 consumers have been surveyed at two-year intervals on their perception of more than 1'100 brands on brand dimensions.

Advertising spending up in April

The Swiss advertising market grew slightly in April. Compared with the same month last year, advertising spending increased by 1.5 percent. According to Media Focus’s calculations, total spending amounted to 419.7 million Swiss francs.

At 14.7 percent, the increase in advertising expenditure to promote food products was particularly striking. This was attributable, among other things, to the milk processor Emmi, which made a significant contribution to the increase in advertising for its new product Jogurtpur (Werbewoche.ch reported) moved up to the top ten advertisers in Switzerland in April. Jogurtpur came fourth in the ranking of the most advertised products, as Media Focus further announced on Tuesday. According to the report, McDonald's restaurants, Swisscom TV and the Ford Focus were the only products to see more advertising. Adding up the first four months, 2013 advertising sales were down 0.2 percent year-on-year. (SDA)

Last but not least: Trainee embarrassments

With their cringeworthy recruitment videos, some companies have earned a place in the history books of cringe. Scholz & Friends Berlin is now adding its own take on the topic with an apprentice rap.

Who hasn't seen them - the videos in which trainees and department heads rap and sing to test the limits of what is acceptable. They pander to the young in order to recruit new talent. Such attempts often end in derisive ridicule from the target group. A few years ago, for example, BMW sent decades of inline six-cylinder reputations down the drain with its "Praktikum Rap":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VM36TAo6i5o

Sparda Bank probably made the worst contribution musically - and attracted a lot of attention. However, it would be presumptuous to speak of calculation in this case.

The German supermarket chain Edeka also inspires with profound lyrics - even in the intro ("I have to honestly say, I agree with you!")

McDonald's at least invested in a professional production - but it didn't hurt the embarrassment.

Just to name a few examples. Scholz & Friends has now taken advantage of the trainee rap cult and used it for the image campaign "The craft" has created a recruitment song that has nothing to hide from its great role models. (hae)

Template builder: Help for agencies

Agencies shouldn't leave Office templates to their IT departments—that's the view of Jonny Wüthrich, who has been supporting advertisers and graphic designers with Microsoft Office templates since early 2013.

Based on layout specifications, precisely tailored Word, Excel and PowerPoint templates are created for the customer's daily work. This enables agencies to ensure that their newly designed appearance is actually implemented. At the same time, customers are offered practical added value, such as the Template builder writes in a press release. "The focus is on the exact implementation of the CD and the greatest possible user-friendliness. The documents are structured in such a way that the customer can do as little wrong as possible," says Wüthrich. He thus offers a solution to an apparently widespread problem.

Exxtra brings portraits to the mountain for Audi

Exxtra is launching a Facebook contest for Audi in which the winners will become works of art: their portraits will be projected onto SAC huts.

For its 150th anniversary, the Swiss Alpine Club SAC has engaged the renowned light artist Gerry Hofstetter. Through the competition of event sponsor Audi, everyone can now become a part of the light art installation "Hütten im Alpenglühn". Exxtra has created a Facebook contest which makes the winners a part of the concept - and thus art: Anyone can participate via the Audi fan page and upload a photo of themselves. Then ten portraits personally selected by the artist will be projected onto an SAC hut within the art campaign. The whole thing will be immortalized in a documentary film and an illustrated book.

Gerry Hofstetter is on tour through the Swiss Alps from April to October, where he illuminates 26 SAC huts with his light art at dusk.

Responsible at Audi: Erich Hunold (Head of Marketing Audi), Barbara Wernli (Head of Advertising Audi). Responsible at Exxtra: Daniel Bieri (ECD), Sandro Kümin, Dominik Sigrist (creation), Marion Lim (text), Robert Seidl, David Suppiger (programming), Susan Baumgartner, Rahel Güttler (consulting).

The Bad Bonn Kilbi festival is not only characterized by a lot of music, but also grants the pilot project "Where the hell is the press?" guest rights. Under this title, the Federal Office of Culture is launching a mentoring program for young music journalists from 23 to 25 May.

"Where the hell is the press?" offers six music journalists at the start of their careers practical training and further education, as detailed in a press release. The music journalists Ane Hebeisen (Der Bund) and Yann Zitouni (RTS) have been engaged as mentors. Together with the participants, they will design and run the independent festival blog from May 23 to 25, 2013 Wherethehellisthepress.netwhich offers alternative reporting to the Bad Bonn Kilbi 2013. The participants Eva Hediger (Winterthur), Laurent Küng (Lausanne), Louis Rossier (Fribourg), Andreas Ruf (Olten), Fabienne Schmuki (Zurich) and Pascaline Sordet (Lausanne) were selected as part of a call for entries.
