World Press Photo 13 with new record attendance

The World Press Photo 13 exhibition came to a close in Zurich on Sunday. Presented by Keystone, this year’s selection of the world’s best press photos drew more visitors than ever before to the Folium in Sihlcity.

During the approximately three-week exhibition at the Folium, 6'368 visitors viewed the approximately 160 award-winning images, according to the statement, and were thus able to review the worldwide events of the past year. World Press Photo 13 is thus the most successful of the six editions presented in Zurich for Keystone. The photographs - especially the winning image by Swedish photographer Paul Hansen - gave rise to lively discussions and left a lasting impression on many a visitor. The guided tours through the exhibition with Nicole Aeby, Freelance Photography Consultant, and Lea Truffer, Picture Editor, gave participants another in-depth look at the work of press photographers and proved extremely popular.

The two fringe events with renowned photographers were also well attended: American Eugene Richards presented his work "War is Personal," which documents fates tied to the war in Iraq. Swiss Christian Lutz spoke about his photographic exploration of the theme of power. Keystone is thus extremely satisfied with the success of the entire event this year and would like to thank the Leading Partners Canon and Baumann & Cie, Banquiers as well as the media partners NZZ am Sonntag and Persönlich for their support. The organizer is already looking forward to presenting World Press Photo again next year.

Last but not least: lip gloss at the wheel, that will be expensive

In Mexico, many car accidents are caused by women applying makeup. In a selfless effort, Mini—with the help of Publicis—has made it its mission to teach the fairer sex a lesson...

...who are unlikely to forget it any time soon. Probably not the car manufacturer either. Whether Mini will find its way into the subconscious in a positive context, however, is written in the stars - or somewhere in a textbook on advertising impact research. However, the message is likely to have made a lasting impression on people's minds. Or at least in the still hearts. (hae)

Unikat and Manifesto let rock for Lidl

Lidl Switzerland is the main sponsor of this year's Greenfield Festival in Interlaken. Unikat and Manifesto have produced a commercial for the event.

This year, Interlaken will once again be the venue for the Greenfield Festival. Launched in 2005, the event is the largest conceptual rock festival in Switzerland. This year's edition will feature Rammstein as headliners with a fire choreography. Lidl Switzerland will also make an appearance as the main sponsor. The retailer will be present on the festival grounds with a tent branch - equipped, among other things, with a wide range of barbecue food. The Küsnacht agency Unikat has developed a film on this topic, which will be shown at the time and at the open air itself. Raphael Werner on the client side and Daniel Meier on the agency side are responsible for the film, which was produced by Manifesto.

Studio Marcus Kraft: illustrated book for Gc Watches

Studio Marcus Kraft produced a large-format coffee-table book featuring photographs by Pino Gomes for the Zug-based watch brand Gc. The book was presented at Basel World.

New York-based photographer Pino Gomes took portraits of over 100 people in more than 25 countries for the watch brand Gc. The resulting images show up-and-coming personalities who have already achieved considerable success in their professional fields. The two-year photo project is now documented in the illustrated book "Smart Luxury Moments", which was officially presented at Basel World 2013.

Studio Marcus Kraft conceived, edited and designed the large-format work. "The design of the book is very straightforward: two image sizes, landscape-format black and white images and only one font style. The paper produced especially for the book, the black pages and the wrapping paper also give the book a very unique character," says art director and designer Marcus Kraft.

The 240-page illustrated book has a print run of 4,700 copies, was produced in Switzerland and is distributed worldwide exclusively by Gc.

IAB Switzerland: Successful year 2012

At its annual general meeting, IAB Switzerland, the trade association for online advertising, gave a positive assessment of 2012: the launch of the «IAB Academy,» expansion of the office, events, and new partnerships. The association also welcomed two new board members.

At the General Assembly on May 23, 2013 at Au Premier in Zurich's main railway station, the President and the entire Board of Directors were discharged, as detailed in a press release. Meanwhile, the association can look back on numerous successful events, publications and healthy finances. For example, the "Digital Marketing Award" remains the central industry event. The "Public Affairs" specialist group is being relaunched as the "Data Protection" specialist group. It aims to promote self-regulation in the industry through education and information.
Catrin Rubenson, CEO of Admazing, and Rolf auf der Maur, lawyer and partner at Vischer Rechtsanwälte, were unanimously elected as new members of the Board. At the same time, Simon Morton and Roger Baltensweiler are stepping down from the Board. IAB President Ueli Weber warmly thanked them for their energetic commitment to the founding and development of IAB Switzerland.

Foundation of the IAB Academy

In spring 2012, the "Digital Marketing for Beginners" diploma course was successfully launched as part of the IAB Academy and has since been completed by over 140 people. The program will therefore be expanded this spring and supplemented by two-day seminars and in-depth courses. The current topics are Digital Campaign Management, Mobile Marketing and Social Media. The IAB is thus responding to the needs communicated in the industry and closing another gap in the training market.

Expansion of the office

In order to accommodate the expanded program, the IAB has strengthened the office with Kristina Kaiser and Raphaela Höhn, who have been focusing on the IAB Academy's continuing education program and promoting cooperation with other schools since January 2013. In addition, Marina Domazet has been working as a project manager since March 1, 2013 and supports all other IAB projects and the work of the various specialist groups in her role.

IAB Switzerland with national and international appearances

IAB Switzerland was once again represented this year with a highly frequented stand at the Swiss Online Marketing Fair (SOM) in Zurich. On July 11 and 12, 2013, the "Werbeplanung.at Summit" will also take place for the fifth time at the Hofburg in Vienna, where IAB Switzerland will be prominently represented as a partner with nine speakers. Finally, in September, visitors to the "Digital Marketing Exposition & Conference" (Dmexco) in Cologne can look forward to a Swiss pavilion, in which IAB Switzerland will play a key role.

Close cooperation with associations

Closer cooperation with the SWA, BSW, IGEM, smama and BVDW associations is also new. The cooperation with the BSW, the association of leading advertising, media and communication agencies in Switzerland, is reflected in the joint specialist group for agencies, which published the guidelines for evaluating a digital agency in April 2013. IGEM, the interest group for electronic media, is also an enrichment for IAB Switzerland. Both associations are committed to the development and promotion of digital media, in particular digital television, and advertising communication. The IAB is in constant contact with the SWA, the Swiss Advertising Clients Association, and is a member of the SWA's "Online" specialist group. In collaboration with Smama, the "Swiss Mobile Association", the IAB publishes the Mobile Compendium 2013 and launches the new IAB Academy course "Mobile Advertising & Marketing". As a further sign of cooperation, this year's "Digital Marketing Award" will be held on November 21 at Kaufleuten Zurich in close collaboration with the partner associations.

Notch Interactive: Campaign for Search.ch

Search.ch can make life easier for users. This is the focus of Notch Interactive's new campaign. Diego shows us all the things you can do with the portal.

Notch Interactive has designed and implemented the new interdisciplinary campaign for the directory and service portal, as detailed in a press release. The campaign focuses on Diego, a young man who makes his way through life with the help of Search.ch. The website's applications and services help him to get out of one or two everyday situations. Search.ch therefore provides moments of success in life. And that's why Notch Interactive has developed a special claim for the campaign: "For more Yesss! in everyday life".

Diego's experiences are presented as infomercials, short anecdotes from his life, in short films. The aim is to show users in an entertaining way which services on the website make everyday life easier. Diego also appears in short TV commercials in which he interacts with the website in surprising ways. The campaign will also be promoted with web banners and advertisements in all parts of the country.

Lesch+Frei makes theater again

As it did in 2007, the Einsiedeln World Theater Society has entrusted Lesch+Frei with developing all communication initiatives for the 2013 Einsiedeln World Theater.

The basis for the open-air performance since 1924, the date of the first Einsiedeln World Theater, is "The Great World Theater," a myth play by the Spanish poet Pedro Calderon de la Barca. Author Tim Krohn and director Beat Fäh are responsible for the production, which is about the question: "How far may man intervene in creation?"

This question was also the briefing for the agency. It quickly became clear that such a topic allows for the most diverse interpretations, as it says in a press release. But it also became clear that it is very demanding to advertise a play whose content the audience does not know. With Schiller, all it takes is an apple, with Goethe a skull and crossbones, and the audience knows that we are talking about William Tell and Faust. This is not the case with the Einsiedeln World Theater - it is rewritten for each performance.

The written word is then also the main element of the campaign. The headlines on and in the individual advertising materials are all taken from Tim Krohn's manuscript and, even in their brevity, say a lot about the content and style of the performance. The visual appearance is intended to exude a theatrical atmosphere and is consistently carried through all advertising materials.

Responsible at the Einsiedeln World Theater:Peter Kälin (President of the World Theater Society), Gerhard Kälin (Marketing and Communications). Responsible at Lesch+Frei Zurich: Natasha La Marca (AD/concept), Peter Lesch (text/concept), Irene Stutz (consulting), Barbara Meier and Désirée Guzzo (DTP and image editing).

SRG launches new platform

SRG Deutschschweiz has launched "SRG Insider. The platform is intended to provide young people interested in the media with interesting information about the sponsor, the company and the program, as well as offering opportunities for dialog.

In addition, registered users can participate in promotions and raffles, as SRG writes in a statement on Tuesday. Registration is free and open to people up to the age of 34. According to SRG, the opinions of young users are particularly sought after: questions on media, corporate and programming policy are regularly put up for discussion and surveys are launched on behalf of the Audience Council, which monitors broadcasts on Swiss radio and television every month. The online offering is supplemented with a weekly selection of "young" program tips.

Sensitize young people to the topic of "public service

The platform "SRG Insider" was born out of the need to draw the attention of a younger target group with an interest in the media to the activities and offerings of SRG SSR and SRG Deutschschweiz and to raise awareness of the issue of "public service", according to the statement. The new online offering is part of the multi-year "Blickwechsel" action program, which SRG.D launched in 2011 to play its civic role more effectively. The platform is also intended to attract new members to SRG.

Press Council reprimands Blick and Telebasel

Blick accused a Zurich-based restorer of fraud. The Press Council ruled that the restorer should have been given a chance to be heard—and that he should not have been photographed without his consent. Telebasel also violated the privacy of a neighborhood activist.

In several articles, the newspaper Blick has made serious accusations against a Zurich restorer. He allegedly received down payments but never delivered the ordered furniture. The Press Council now holds that the craftsman should have been heard before publication. Furthermore, the craftsman does not have to put up with being photographed in his store from the street. Without the consent of the person concerned, this would only be permissible if there was an overriding public interest. But this is not the case, because the photo does not serve to document the controversial business practices of the craftsman, as the Press Council writes in a statement published on Tuesday. This also applies if the image is anonymized for publication with a black bar.

Protection from admission, right to comment

According to the Press Council, the right to one's own image protects not only against unauthorized publication, but under certain circumstances even before the picture is taken. It is not acceptable, for example, to ambush someone at their front door, take a picture against their will and then put a bar on it to protect their privacy, writes the Press Council. In addition, Blick should have confronted the craftsman with the serious accusations before publishing the article. Admittedly, the newspaper has already published most of the accusations in earlier articles, together with the statement of the person concerned. According to the Press Council, however, it would have been obligated to include his point of view in the new articles as well. The restorer would have had to be heard on new allegations anyway.

In its statement, the Press Council concludes that Blick has violated the right of the person concerned to his own image. In addition, the person concerned should have been heard before the article was published. In contrast, the newspaper neither violated the duty to tell the truth nor distorted information or otherwise violated the "Declarations of the Duties and Rights of Journalists.

Telebasel violates privacy

Telebasel has harassed a neighborhood activist with a running camera and thus violated her privacy. The Press Council has partially approved a complaint, as it announced on Tuesday. The woman is defending herself against a construction project; she had refused an interview. Admittedly, a local television station is allowed to record a politically active person in the picture, if this goes in a public function to a public event. However, it is not permissible to "ambush" the person at the front door and continue to harass her if she makes it clear that she does not want to give information or be filmed.

The person concerned is taking a stand against the large-scale project in Basel's Kleinhüningen Rhine harbor, which has been apostrophized as "Rhinehattan". She is also a member of a state support group for it. Telebasel filmed once in front of a building where this group was holding a meeting and once in front of the woman's front door. Because the woman had previously declined an interview request sent by e-mail, it was "disproportionate" to follow her with the camera afterwards, the press council states in the communiqué. (SDA)

Last but not least: Happy Birthday, Evening View

Blick am Abend, the print version of the quality press’s worst nightmare, is celebrating its fifth anniversary—and it’s not just the Young Community that’s growing up as time goes on.

On June 2, one of Switzerland's biggest free newspapers celebrates its birthday (only 20 Minuten, the Coop Zeitung and the Migros magazine have a birthday according to Mach Basic 2012-2 more readers). Throughout the anniversary week, the newspaper will surprise its 633,000 readers with campaigns. Monday's edition, for example, showed all the people involved on the cover - from intern Elena Z. to column godfather Helmut G. (who now apparently wears a beard). Without irony, a likeable bunch! Inside the magazine, celebrities congratulate on the anniversary - ex-Miss Amanda Ammann is probably the only person who has ever appeared in the paper both in real life and as "Schnügel des Tages" (represented by her dog). Someone should try to imitate her.

bam-umschlag

On Tuesday, a "Schwiizerdüütsch" edition will follow! The first daily newspaper ever in this language, as Ringier announced on Monday. Finally something in dialect again, after all, the Swatch annual report was published almost three months ago. And we are also looking forward to the announced "best front pages of the last years". Ob "The ugly German"(2009) will also be there?

Anyone who commutes would not want to (ex-)miss this newspaper. After all, objectively speaking, the longer it goes on, the better it gets. This can also be seen in the sales figures (conveniently called "readership figures" among free newspapers). It's not yet five years ago that you were begged by friendly animators to take pity on a copy. It was not uncommon for cheap commuters spoiled by 20 Minuten, Heute, .ch, News and Metropol to think they were in the wrong movie as far as content was concerned. Piles of newspapers left lying around the next morning - it doesn't get any bleaker than that (Mach Basic 2008-1: 259,000 readers). Today, you have to get up early (from your office chair) to grab a piece of the blackberry-colored gold at Zurich main station. Nothing runs after 5 p.m. on some days - noun is no longer really omen.

And so one has almost become one with the contents over the years. Together with the single woman who is looking for a tall Southerner with well-groomed hands - and the single man who is on the lookout for an athletic blonde with a slim figure and beautiful eyes. With Mr. Glogger, who puts the world in order by e-mail. With the pictures of the day, which are subtitled more originally today than in the past. With the joke of the evening, which is at least consistently unfunny. With the heartwarming Schatzchäschtli love vows, which are not even corrected by the editors out of respect for the fascinating text message language of youth when obvious typos happen ("Askim han dich so krass gern will dich nkme verlkre hsch mer so guet dur die ziet ghulfe und Bisch mer Au jetz no e Mega stktz Love you so Blond & Brknette").

It seems as if the former problem child of the oversaturated commuter market has grown up. And with it, its steadily growing readership. Even the young community has become more mature and wiser, as Vreni (43) from Emmen recently proved:

vreni

So let's hope for another five years. At least. In times of paywalls and subscription price increases, people will one day be grateful to the free press for being able to call up at least the weather and the news of the day free of charge.

Thomas Häusermann

Evoq: Annual report realized for the University of Zurich

This is the fourth time Evoq has produced the University of Zurich’s annual report. Based on the corporate design introduced in 2010, Evoq is responsible for the report’s design and layout.

This year, the image section of the current report focuses on the university's research priorities in the area of interdisciplinary cutting-edge research, according to a press release. Under the title "Lighthouses of Knowledge," photographer Ursula Meisser created full-page portraits of researchers and their research areas - depicted by wall projections. In addition, the entire university management is now presented on a double page. The supplementary flyer with facts and figures has been revised and made even clearer this year. The new overview and access maps take into account the complex geographical situation.
