Ratings debacle: Kantar Media takes a stand

Richard Asquith, Global CEO of Kantar Media Audiences, comments on the "misleading and inaccurate claims that have been made in the media in recent weeks".

Kantar Media Switzerland, part of the international Kantar Group UK, has developed the much-discussed TV panel in collaboration with Mediapulse, which has been the subject of heated debate since its launch at the beginning of 2013. On Tuesday, the Global CEO of Kantar Media Audiences made a written statement:

"In close collaboration with Mediapulse and the Swiss television industry, we have developed a world-leading television ratings measurement system that meets the challenges of changing media consumption behavior. There is no doubt about the validity and accuracy of our measurement data, which we have been transmitting to Mediapulse on a daily basis since the beginning of 2013.

The new panel differs significantly from its predecessors and brings with it significant improvements, such as the inclusion of households that are not listed in the telephone directory or only watch TV online, as well as those with "newer" TV sets with DVB tuners, which were not previously included. It is therefore not surprising that some broadcasters have seen significant changes in their ratings. We believe that the previous ratings were influenced by shortcomings in panel composition and measurement systems.

The system used by Kantar Media complies with the GGTAM(i) guidelines, uses state-of-the-art measurement equipment and is based on our global experience in conducting audience measurement in countries such as China, Scandinavia, Russia, Spain and the UK. Since the beginning of 2013, two independent audits have been carried out, which have confirmed that the new Swiss quota measurement system works precisely and reliably and that the measurements are carried out in accordance with international standards.

We categorically reject unsubstantiated allegations that the independent experts (who were selected and instructed by Mediapulse or reported to Mediapulse) have any financial connection with Kantar. We will vigorously defend our position against those who spread such false statements.

It should be noted that the Uvek (Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications) recently announced that the Kantar Media measurement devices used by Mediapulse meet the legal requirements. In its assessment, the Uvek also recommends that the data be passed on to customers and published on the market.

Kantar Media is proud of the service we are developing in Switzerland with Mediapulse and look forward to the day when this data can be published and we can work with the industry to improve and develop this service."

Lürzer's "200 Best Digital Artists Worldwide" Archive

More and more often, advertisers are creating images that artfully blend photography and illustration. The renowned trade magazine Lürzer's Archiv has collected outstanding examples and published them in the publication "200 Best Digital Artists Worldwide.

An elephant and a sumo wrestler pressed into a cube, a cat in a boxing ring, an elephant carrying safari statists on its back. There are no limits to the imagination when it comes to "digital imaging." With the help of the computer, images are created in which photography and illustration merge.

The trade magazine Lürzer's Archiv has picked out the best from 5'000 digitally created images and is devoting a special publication to the advertising motifs. The jury, consisting of Michael Jostmeier (Technical University of Nuremberg), Anne Telford (foreign correspondent at Communication Arts) and Chris Christodoulou (CEO of Saddington Baynes), selected 516 works for the publication "200 Best Digital Artists Worldwide". The images, created entirely or in part on computers, are presented on 416 pages. They come from 200 digital artists from 33 countries, including some from Switzerland: Scheffold.Vizner, Fluxif, Linus Schneider, Michael Meier, Oliver Schmid, Vasp Datatecture, Rohner Retouch, Daniel Belet / DB Retouching.

For example, two motifs of the Zurich public transport company were included in the selection. They were conceived by Ruf Lanz and then realized to a high standard in close collaboration with Patrik Rohner/Rohner Retouche (subject Schlemmertram) and Linus Schneider/Pixelprinz (subject Prime Tower).

Christian Wanner leaves Leshop.ch

CEO and co-founder Christian Wanner will step down from his role as chief operating officer of the Migros subsidiary LeShop.ch at the end of September 2013, but will remain on the board of directors.

Together with entrepreneurs Alain Nicod, Jesús Martin Garcia and Rémi Walbaum, Christian Wanner founded LeShop.ch at the age of 27 in a commercial space in Lausanne. The team was strengthened in 2000 with Dominique Locher (Marketing and Sales), in 2003 with Marcelo Alé (IT) and in 2004 with Sacha Herrmann (Finance, HR and Logistics). The partnership and acquisition of the majority of shares in 2006 by the Migros Group marked the beginning of a multi-year phase of innovation and triggered an expansion with annual growth averaging 30 percent. Under Christian Wanner, the Leshop.ch team developed new concepts for online grocery with a great deal of pioneering spirit. These included the establishment of two logistics centers, the introduction of express shipping of frozen products and supermarket apps for tablet and smartphone. The most recent coups were the opening of the first Leshop.ch Drive pick-up center in Studen BE last October and, in partnership with SBB, the birth of Leshop.ch Rail with pick-up points at Zurich and Lausanne stations.

Christian Wanner will devote himself to new projects after taking some time off and will remain active as an entrepreneur. "Together with my long-time GL colleagues Dominique Locher, Sacha Herrmann and Marcelo Alé, we were able to awaken this special Leshop spirit, a Feu Sacré, in many employees and partners. Now I'm looking forward to passing on this fire and know that the foundation for a successful future is solid, so that we can continue to inspire our loyal clientele with plenty of convenience."

"Nothing": effectiveness of online advertising shown

In recent days, the Swiss Media Association and Comqed have demonstrated the effectiveness of online advertising—with the mysterious and wide-reaching «Nothing» campaign.

In Switzerland, the amount of advertising that is placed online is still disproportionate to the attention that online media has been receiving for some time. In addition, some advertisers still see online campaigns more as "click" advertising; branding, on the other hand, only takes place online to a limited extent. The Swiss Media Association, whose members operate the Swiss news sites with the widest reach, therefore decided to launch a generic marketing campaign for online branding.

As a classic mystery campaign, Comqed Dialog realized "Nothing" in advertisements and on online banners of the major media houses. The subject was so simple that, according to the press release, many advertising managers at the media companies asked whether it was a misunderstanding. On mouseover, the online banners changed from "Nothing" to "Nothing seen", "Nothing happened" or "Nothing learned". The banners linked to a landing page where you could leave your email address if you were interested in the resolution.

After a week of mystery phase, which raised many questions in the industry (over 5,000 subscribers on the landing page alone on the first day), the almost 2,500 most important marketing managers in Switzerland received a physical dissolution mailing. "Seen nothing? - If you can't even see anything, what can your advertising do?" was the central message of the mailing. The thousands of viewers on the online platforms were proof that online branding is seen well after all and that it's not just the click rate that counts.

This will be followed in the following week by an online solution campaign, which will also solve the puzzle for the previously puzzled "Everyman". Mailing recipients can become part of this campaign and receive banner free space worth 5 times CHF 100,000 as part of the competition.

Last but not least: Tweet map

Maps showing where and how much people have tweeted allow us to draw interesting conclusions—especially when they've been tracking vast numbers of tweets since 2009.

Miguel Rios, Visual Insight Manager at Twitter, spoke at the internal blog has published interesting maps showing geotagged tweets. As an extremely large number of such messages have seen the light of day since 2009 and each tweet is marked with a dot, not only the maps but also cities, roads and differences within urban centers can be identified. Even individual busy sea routes become visible. If there are many points at the same location, the color changes. Incidentally, all maps can be displayed on Flickr and can be enlarged to the original size by right-clicking. (hae)

275 years of history at a click

The archives of L'Express and L'Impartial are fully accessible online. L'Express was founded on October 2, 1738; in 2013, it celebrated its 275th anniversary, making it the oldest French-language newspaper in the world to have been published continuously.

To celebrate this extraordinary history, all published issues of the Express and its sister paper L'Impartial, which was founded on 1 January 1881, have been digitized. All issues of the two titles from their foundation until February 2013 are publicly accessible online. The new issues will be continuously digitized and gradually put online. With the 275 years it covers, this project is a milestone in the history of the Swiss press. No fewer than 1.5 million pages are available at the click of a mouse.

According to the press release, it took the cooperation of several partners to make the project a success. Under the leadership of the publisher of the two titles, the société neuchâteloise de Presse (SNP), the Bibliothèque publique et universitaire de Neuchâtel, the Bibliothèque de la Ville de La Chaux-de-Fonds and the Swiss National Library were involved. The project was financially supported by the Loterie romande and the Banque cantonale neuchâteloise.

Partner & Partners: Campaign for the Cancer League

Partner & Partner created the «5 a Day» print campaign for the Swiss Cancer League. The seven ads encourage people to enjoy fruits and vegetables through declarations of love.

According to the press release, the subjects will be as diverse and colorful as the people, languages and cultures of Switzerland - and like the varieties themselves. The fact that the appearance of "5 a day" is so fresh and colorful is not least thanks to the new campaign manager Barbara Jöhr. "The aim of the new campaign of '5 a day' is to position fruit and vegetable consumption as a healthy lifestyle - without any schoolmasterly overtones. We want to inform the Swiss population about the benefits of a healthy diet in a fun way," explains the 34-year-old, who joined the Cancer League from Kambly last fall.

The posters for the new campaign for "5 a day" will hang almost exclusively as backlit posters throughout Switzerland for two weeks from the beginning of June. Other advertising media have been created in collaboration with licensee Coop: Flyers in the fruit and vegetable department at the Coop, banners on the Coop website, and ads in the Coop newspaper communicating a contest. "5 a day" is a campaign to promote vegetable and fruit consumption by the Swiss Cancer League. The aim is to raise awareness and inform the Swiss population.

Cannes Lions: exhibition and book on the most influential campaigns

As part of the 60th anniversary of the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity, the organizers are launching an exhibition and a book titled «Game Changers» about advertising campaigns that have significantly transformed the advertising industry.

The Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity, which is taking place for the 60th time this year, is launching an exhibition and a book entitled "Game Changers" on advertising campaigns that have significantly influenced and changed the advertising industry over six decades. These include campaigns such as "Think Small" by Volkswagen and the "Launderette" laundromat ad by Levi's. The accompanying book "Game Changers: The Evolution of Advertising", published by Taschen Verlag, also addresses the context in which these campaigns were created - enriched with reports from important personalities such as Lee Clow, Chairman of TBWA or Sir John Hegarty, Worldwide Creative Director & Founder of BBH Global.

The exhibition will take place from June 15 to 22, 2013 at the Palais des Festivals and will be open to delegates and the public. After the Festival, the exhibition will be presented at various locations around the world. The book "Game Changers: The Evolution of Advertising" will be available for the first time at the Festival in Cannes and in bookshops and online from late summer. Further information is available at Gamechangersatcannes.com to find.

Humor instead of cavalry - this is how German politics laughs

Copywriter and concept developer Hans Peter Brugger and advertising director Ralph Kappes collected the favorite jokes of German politicians. Now the two Swiss men have published them in book form.

Politics is a serious, even statesmanlike matter. But it doesn't always have to be that way. For a new book, two Swiss authors have asked top German politicians to tell their favorite joke. Following the example of the successful first book in the Series ("Die Lieblingswitze des Schweizer Parlaments", published in the autumn of 2011) is the counterpart to this, a witty snapshot of the German political landscape in the 2013 election year. The book by Hans Peter Brugger and Ralph Kappes proves this: Despite all the bad news, German politicians have not lost their sense of humor - not even towards Switzerland, Peer Steinbrück or not. The authors have been able to elicit their personal favorite joke from over 80 top German politicians - including federal ministers, prime ministers, members of the German Bundestag and deserving ex-politicians.

It is amusing to read in two respects. Firstly, the jokes, and secondly, who contributed which ones. "Tell me your favourite joke and I'll tell you who you are", as Goethe once said. The similarities and differences between the favorite jokes of top politicians on both sides are also interesting from a Swiss perspective. For example, the Basler-versus-Zürcher joke by National Councillor Eric Nussbaumer (SP) from the 2011 Swiss edition has found an equivalent in the favorite joke of MP Wolfgang Bosbach (CDU), which pokes fun at the rivalry between the two German cities of Cologne and Düsseldorf. And while the Swiss parliamentarians focused on the Swiss' shrewdness, the Germans are proud of their economic and technical achievements. Of course, there are also a few jokes about their political opponents. The jokes range from subtle to hearty.

The book "The favorite jokes of German politicians" is published by Münchner Riva publishing house has been published. It is available in bookshops throughout Germany and Switzerland. So that campaigners, voters as well as us and the German ex-pats don't lose their laughter, as it says in a press release.

Last but not least: Welcome to your vacation

A man stranded on a deserted island reaches for the bag of Snacketti that has drifted ashore on his little island. In his excitement, he doesn't realize that this «lifesaver» might have its own pitfalls.

Advico's TV commercial is a continuation of the concept "We do everything for the best potato chips": At the end, the stranded man meets two potato chips experts who have suffered the same fate as him when testing the Snacketti:

The animated story was produced by Kompost. The TV commercial will run on Swiss television and IPTV from June 3. The accompanying ad, poster and POS advertising material tell the same story: "Watch where you eat your Snacketti". A vacation mood is created. (uma)
