No satire: Press Council reprimands Ticino party papers

The Press Council has upheld a complaint against the Ticino SP newspaper *Confronti* and the Lega Sunday newspaper *Mattino della Domenica*. The council found that, through their satirical publications, the newspapers had violated human dignity and infringed on privacy.

These were two different publications, according to the Press Council. However, both had in common that they had triggered a great echo and a debate about the freedom of the press and the limits of satire in Ticino in 2012.

Questions for Boris Bignasca

In March 2012, the monthly magazine of the Ticino SP published an article with ten fictitious questions for Boris Bignasca, son of the late Lega founder Giuliano Bignasca and author at Mattino della Domenica. Boris Bignasca was called various names and described as a child from a dysfunctional family. Among other things, it was claimed that his father had abandoned his mother when she was pregnant with him - and subsequently failed to pay alimony. According to the Press Council, Bignasca's privacy had been violated. The fact that the attacked person himself published the article online does not change this. The Press Council added: "Even if Boris and Giuliano Bignasca express themselves pointedly in public, they do not completely waive the protection of their privacy.

Death wished

Boris Bignasca, however, is himself pilloried on the second part of the complaint. In April 2012, he published in Il Mattino, in a satirical column, the sentence directed against the writer Giovanni Orelli: "We eagerly await the next publication under the name of Giovanni Orelli. In the obituaries." The Mattino newspaper itself acknowledged the sentence as a "slip" at the time, writes the Press Council. Giuliano Bignasca, then editor-in-chief, had explained that it was a single unfortunate sentence in a satirical vessel. Boris Bignasca drew consequences at the time and resigned from the Lega.

Satire has limits

Satire is allowed to exaggerate, exaggerate and distort, writes the Press Council. But there are limits to what is permissible. These limits are exceeded, among other things, when the human dignity of individuals and groups is intolerably diminished. The right to life is the core of human dignity, it said (SDA).

Last but not least: it's finally match day again!

This year's «Nickelodeon Play Day» will take place on June 12, 2013. The children's channel wants to encourage its target audience to play outside. What sounds like a socially critical joke is actually meant seriously.

This is the fourth time the day has taken place. At 1 p.m. sharp, the flickering babysitter switches off the picture and calls on viewers to be active themselves - possibly even outside in the fresh air! The broadcaster's online offering is also being Communication offline during the active window. Until 5 p.m. - then the wait is over and Spongebob takes over again.

As most children do not even know what they could do with the free time provided by the broadcaster, the Nickelodeon.ch useful ("cool") tips for bridging the gap. So far there are two, maybe there will be more - there's still some time until the big day. One of them: "Make a kite" in eight steps. First step: "Take a piece of paper (no matter what color) and cut out the shape of a diamond". Anyone who voluntarily spent a moment or two in the fresh air as a child knows that after this well-intentioned introduction, you can confidently put the project aside and get back to more functional things like the TV or iPad. Tears, anger and disappointment would be the result of the doomed construction. Sooner or later there will be a kite-flying documentary on somewhere anyway, so you won't miss anything. By the way, if you try to get a recording early enough, it's a great way to bridge the media-imposed broadcasting break and the little ones learn something in the process!

The "Nickelodeon Play Day" is an idea of the US parent channel, which has been organizing the event since 2003. In Northern Europe, the collective children's activation will also take place simultaneously in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands and, for the first time, Poland. (hae)

NZZ Media Group: Own marketing as of 2014

The NZZ Media Group will market the print media of its companies on its own from 2015. Publicitas will thus remain the exclusive marketer of the NZZ Media Group only until the end of 2014, according to a joint announcement on Wednesday.

After years of successful cooperation with Publicitas on an exclusive basis, the NZZ Media Group considers it crucial to be able to react autonomously to the rapid changes in the advertising market in the future, Polo Stäheli, CEO of the NZZ Media Group, is quoted as saying in the statement. That is why it is switching to self-directed marketing. Publicitas remains the preferred partner of the NZZ Media Group in the marketing of advertising space, the statement continues. It will work as a non-exclusive marketer for titles such as Neue Zürcher Zeitung, NZZ am Sonntag, St. Galler Tagblatt and Neue Luzerner Zeitung after 2014, it adds.

Publicitas remains present in the regions

Publicitas will maintain its sales organization in the Zurich, St. Gallen and Lucerne regions, as Managing Director Alain D. Bandle explains in the communiqué. Publicitas will continue to offer its partners a nationwide sales network. In addition, Publicitas will introduce a standardized advertising management system for all media types from 2014. Among other things, this will allow even more effective processing of the customer market. (SDA)

Xeit looks behind the scenes of VBZ for 24 hours

The Xeit agency has created a microsite for VBZ where users can take a 24-hour look behind the scenes at Zurich Public Transportation.

VBZ moves Zurich - 24 hours a day. The employees of Zurich Transport guarantee public mobility around the clock. Many aspects of this are well known to Zurich residents: They use streetcars and buses in the city every day and buy tickets at the points of sale. But what happens when the streetcars roll into the depot, what are the tasks of a streetcar maintenance worker and what exactly does the nocturnal track builder do at VBZ?

By means of a timeline as navigation, users can navigate on the Microsite View, listen to and experience everyday work reports from 24 VBZ employees. Through text reports, photo stream, videos and social media live stream, one is close to the people. The storytelling allows an open approach to topics such as "shift work" and does not gloss over anything, according to a statement. More unpleasant sides of the professions are also mentioned, such as cleaning work in the streetcar or the emergency deployment of ticket inspectors in the event of an accident. Potential applicants can thus take a look behind the scenes and get an attractive opportunity to get to know the professions of their possible future employer better.

The Swiss online full-service agency Xeit created the creative concept, designed and programmed the microsite. A mobile site was made especially for mobile users, with customized user guidance.

Wirz Group with stable sales and new partners

Wirz was able to slightly increase its consolidated revenue once again in 2012. With the appointment of Michael Waeber as the new CFO and Andi Portmann’s promotion to CD, two more senior executives became co-partners in Wirz Partner Holding.

At its Annual General Meeting, the Wirz Group was again able to present pleasing figures this year: Sales rose again slightly last year by 2.3 percent from CHF 25.3 million to CHF 25.9 million BBE (gross operating income). The two long-standing core companies Wirz Werbung and Wirz Corporate were both able to post further growth, and Wirz Wietlisbach Dialog, which was newly formed at the end of 2011, also made a significant contribution to Group sales in its first independent year, according to a statement.

In terms of new business, the past year was again quite impressive: A total of seven competitor presentations were won and a total of twelve new customers were welcomed, including the BSI Group, Denner, Energie Service Biel, Migros Ice-Tea, Orior, Rahn, Roadcross and Shikar (Witena). Since the founding of Wirz Partner Holding 38 years ago, it has been part of the Wirz corporate culture that senior employees can participate in the Group and its success as co-shareholders. This year, these are Michael Waeber, the new CFO Group, and Andi Portmann, new CD at Wirz Werbung.

Waeber joins from SFLB, where he was part of the agency's original founding team eleven years ago and sought a new challenge on the entrepreneurial side following its sale to the Leo Burnett network. He succeeds Rinaldo Poltera, who left the Wirz Group after more than ten years. Portmann has been a successful, award-winning copywriter/conceptualizer at Wirz Werbung for three years and was recently promoted to Creative Director (Portrait from the Werbewoche print edition). According to the statement, he has made a significant contribution to Wirz moving up to second place in Werbewoche's Swiss creative rankings this year under the leadership of ECD Philipp Skrabal.

Geri Aebi, CEO Wirz Group, is extremely pleased about the additional Wirz partners: "They once again confirm the attractiveness of our partner model, which is probably unique in the Swiss agency landscape. Each new Medien Information 2 co-shareholder strengthens the entrepreneurial base of the Wirz Group and thus the identification and motivation of the management level." He sees the reasons for the consistently positive business performance not least in the Group's special constellation: "With our three companies operating under one roof, we offer a wide range of communications services and, thanks to joint management, can network them quickly and easily for every customer need." Since customers are once again increasingly looking for the communicative general contractor as an interlocutor who develops the best strategic and conceptual solutions with them across disciplines, the owner-managed Wirz Group with its now over 140 employees is decidedly confident about the future.

ASW celebrated 50th anniversary

The ASW Alliance of Swiss Advertising Agencies celebrated its 50th anniversary last weekend. With more than 90 members and guests in attendance, the celebration at the venerable Grandhotel Giessbach near Brienz was a grand affair.

On Friday, the first item on the agenda was a short general meeting, followed by a lavish aperitif with a wonderful view of Lake Brienz. The guests then made their way to the Salon Belle Epoque, where an elegant dinner was held in a sophisticated setting. The evening was hosted by entertainer Michel Gammenthaler, with musical accompaniment provided by Paul Haag & The Horns Plus.

Of course, the anniversary celebrations also included a few awards, as detailed in a press release. The old and new ASW President Michael Waldvogel presented the three "longest-serving" ASW agencies Ecknauer + Schoch (Herisau), JJM Monnin (Hombrechtikon) and Weiss Communication + Design (Biel) each with a bottle of exquisite champagne. All three agencies have been with ASW for 33 years or more. ASW members Markus Ender and Andy Ruf, who were born in the year ASW was founded and are also celebrating their 50th birthday this year, also received a bottle of fine bubbly each. And last but not least, one of the younger ASW members, the himmelblau agency from Burgdorf, was presented with its admission diploma.

On Saturday morning, two different excursion programs were tackled. While the planned hike on the Axalp had to be rescheduled without further ado to a visit to the Giessbach waterfalls due to a closed snow cover and completely soaked slopes, almost 30 advertisers took the boat to Brienz and visited both the Swiss Woodcarving Museum and a woodcarving workshop. Shortly after 2 p.m., both groups met again at the Grandhotel Giessbach and were seen off by the Board of Directors.
