Last but not least: Google storefront as a consolation

Publishers have recently been able to recommend articles on Google's search engine. However, even with this new feature, the disagreements between Google and the publishers have not been resolved.

The "Editorial recommendations" section has been available on the right-hand side of the screen on Google News since Wednesday. Publishers have the opportunity to present five newspaper articles or other content there. However, the peace offer is a consolation for the French-speaking Swiss Publishers' Association for the time being, but the disagreements are far from over. The platform is a showcase for publishers on a purely commercial site, as Daniel Hammer, Secretary General of the French-speaking Swiss publishers' association Médias Suisses, told the news agency SDA on Thursday. Google is thus ensuring that the search engine is used - for the group, the campaign is also advertising. "This is in no way progress or even an agreement in the differences between Google and the publishers," emphasized Hammer.
The conflict between Google and publishers has been simmering for a long time: Swiss publishers accuse Google of using their articles without compensating them (Werbewoche.ch reported).

The internet company Google is looking at the offer from a slightly different perspective: Google is offering Swiss publishers a place to bring together the best of traditional and digital journalism, the company wrote in a statement on Wednesday, according to SDA.

Even if Google's new offering is not the expected "non-plus-ultra" that would end the conflict for publishers, it can still be used. The Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Basler Zeitung and Tages-Anzeiger are among the Swiss-German media outlets touting their five best contents. (uma/SDA)

Blick editorial cadre backs Bleicher

The editorial staff of *Blick* have rallied behind Andrea Bleicher, acting editor-in-chief. In a letter to CEO Marc Walder, they are calling for Bleicher to be confirmed as editor-in-chief.

Persoenlich.com made the letter public on Wednesday evening. Blick confirmed the receipt of the letter, but could not comment on it at the moment, Edi Estermann, head of communications, told the news agency SDA.

The trigger for the letter, was a report in the NZZ am Sonntag, which reported on the impending removal of Andrea Bleicher. According to NZZ am Sonntag, she was to be replaced by business journalist and former Facts editor-in-chief René Lüchinger (Werbewoche.ch reported).

The editorial management, department heads and their deputies of Blick, Blick Online and Sonntagsblick cannot explain the non-confirmation of Andrea Bleicher, as it says in the letter. In their view, there is not the slightest reason to do so. Bleicher had distinguished herself within a very short time, she had also personally given the newspaper a face. "But this fruitful atmosphere of departure is now apparently to end, after only half a year," the letter says. The unanimous reaction to this is consternation. The authors of the letter are not concerned with Lüchinger's professional and human qualities. It is rather a question of whether a change is necessary and what the consequences would be. (SDA)

Grueen.ch: Guide to sustainable cuisine

Grueen.ch is a new restaurant guide with a special focus: it exclusively presents environmentally conscious and sustainably produced establishments that offer vegetarian, vegan, organic and regional dishes.

Right from the start, the conscious connoisseur will find Grueen.ch A whole 100 restaurants, according to a press release. It's not a trend, but a change in thinking: consumers no longer simply want to consume, but to shop and enjoy consciously. The food service industry is responding to this trend by offering organic food and vegan dishes on its menus.

Conscious eaters can now find a list of such establishments in an online guide. Here they can find out where they can eat organic, vegan or gluten-free food and how the establishments are set up in terms of production, recycling, energy, fair trade and the like. The platform also offers news, trends, tips and - particularly pleasing - healthy, sustainable recipes to cook. In this way, Grueen.ch is working to ensure that sustainable food becomes more and more part of everyday life and an integral part of Swiss gastronomy.

With Bio Suisse, the association of Swiss organic farming organizations and its Knospe brand, Grueen.ch has gained an experienced organic partner in the field of sustainability. Valérie Monnin, responsible for gastronomy at Bio Suisse, says: "With this platform, Grueen.ch is helping sustainable Swiss kitchens to create an attractive and informative showcase that will not only delight gourmets."

The platform - a TNT Events project - aims to sensitize, inform and motivate guests to get involved, because the creators of Grueen.ch are convinced that we need to change our nutritional awareness. It is no longer the case that our decisions have no influence on our environment. On the contrary: making conscious decisions about what we eat - or don't eat - helps to preserve our environment for future generations.

ROG and Syndicom condemn house search

Reporters Without Borders (ROG) and Syndicom are protesting against the action taken by the Neuchâtel judiciary against Le Matin journalist Ludovic Rocchi.

His apartment was searched yesterday, Tuesday, and IT equipment and documents, some of which also belong to Rocchi's wife, were confiscated (Werbewoche.ch reported). The Ticino authorities also confiscated Rocchi's laptop on behalf of the Neuchâtel judiciary, as the journalist is currently working at the Locarno Film Festival. The reason for this action is a complaint for defamation and libel against Rocchi, which was filed by a professor from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Neuchâtel. In 2012, Rocchi had reported for Le Matin on a plagiarism affair at the university in which the professor was allegedly involved, according to the newspaper.

As Reporters Without Borders wrote in a press release on Wednesday, the search of a journalist's private premises is a first for Switzerland. It also shows that the judiciary is prepared to do anything to gain access to a journalist's sources - even if this infringes on the freedom of the press.

"Serious attack on investigative journalism"

In a press release, Syndicom also expressed its concern about the freedom of the press and is outraged by this "serious attack on investigative journalism". Syndicom opposes these "disproportionate measures by the judiciary". For the union, the protection of journalists' sources of information is fundamental. Without this protection, the basis of press freedom is at risk. In a country where investigative journalism is already severely restricted, this search of a journalist's private residence appears to be an unacceptable attempt at intimidation. Although a professor at the University of Neuchâtel had filed a complaint against the journalist, the disproportionate procedure of a search at a journalist's private residence - the first of its kind in Switzerland - was in no way justified.

Comedia, which merged into Syndicom on January 1, 2011, had already defended three Sonntagsblick journalists who had been intimidated in the "secret fax to CIA prisons" affair, according to the press release. In April 2007, they were finally acquitted by a military court and received compensation.

Koch Communication: Life is offline

The agency Koch Kommunikation aims to give offline letter writing a boost with a campaign for Die Post—true to the motto: «Life is offline—everything looks better in a letter.»

Koch Kommunikation was commissioned to implement a campaign for the Post Offices and Sales division of Swiss Post, specifically to consolidate the private mailing of A Mail letters and Postpac Priority parcels. Actually, everyone knows it: a handwritten letter is more enjoyable than an SMS or an e-mail. To the recipient, but also to the sender. And yet we are writing fewer and fewer letters. This is now being countered by the campaign.

Koch Kommunikation developed the course of the campaign and implemented all measures. The key visual is a handwritten letter on which typical SMS messages are written in loving pen-and-ink handwriting. True to the core idea of the campaign: "Life is offline - everything looks better in a letter." Advertising media used include ads, posters on public transport and in post offices, ad screen films, online banners and Facebook Ads.

An important part of the campaign is a contest that invites the audience to invent their own news. The texts are published on the campaign microsite Post.ch/life-offline integrated directly into the campaign subject and can be shared with friends via social media or email or printed out. And people can vote for the suggestions. The competition lasts around 5 weeks. After just two weeks of running, over 1,200 entries have been written and around 18,000 visits to the website have been recorded. The closing date for entries is August 29, 2013.

Responsible at Post CH, post offices and sales: Yvonne Wehrli (Head of Marketing Communications), Angela Hächler (Consultant Marketing Communications). Responsible at Koch Communication: Jean-Marc Demeulemeester, Monika Beerli, Sandro Kradolfer (creation); Andrina Speziale, Beatrice Werthmüller (consulting); Claudio Sprenger, Pascal Dürsteler, Sergio Lavanga, Philipp Dettling (programming). Last but not least: Henkel dry

The German company Henkel has stirred up a lot of trouble in the East and angered Ukraine. The toilet block at the center of the controversy: the Bref Duo Stick scented toilet cleaner.

Russian television - which is consumed by many Ukrainians - ran a commercial advertising the toilet cleaner in question. The problem: the product stuck in the bowl looks like the Ukrainian flag. Blue at the top, yellow at the bottom.

bds

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3jDCQxme7M

The result was a (virtual!) shitstorm: the offended ex-Soviets took to Facebook and YouTube to vent their frustration. The explanation given by the responsible Henkel manager Tore Birol that blue stands for hygienic water and yellow for the refreshing scent of lemon (source: SDA) failed to appease the angry Ukrainians. Understandable: there is probably no more unfavorable place for a national flag. So the product was immediately withdrawn from the Eastern market - Russia, Slovakia and Kazakhstan will have to revert to the traditional toilet duck and brush. Incidentally, the Bref Duo Sticks were not sold in Ukraine anyway - as if the clever Henkel marketing department had smelled the lemon-scented roast ahead of time.

The next step will probably be to look for and find new colors. This is unlikely to be easy, as most of the color combinations are occupied by flags. An emergency solution, which is certainly still available: brown/yellow. As a little help, here is an overview of "The flags of the world" (as of 2010).

Media Focus: Advertising market stable

From a full-year perspective, the Swiss advertising market remains stable at the previous year’s level, with modest growth of 0.1 percent (+1.8 million francs). This is shown in the Media Focus Advertising Market Trend Report 2013/07.

In the summer month of July 2013, advertising print was measured at around CHF 275 million. This represents a drop of 2.4 percent (-6.8 million Swiss francs). This is the sharpest decline so far this year. So far this year, the advertising market has developed slightly positively, with advertising print still up 0.1 percent from January to July, according to market research company Media Focus on Wednesday.

Significantly less advertising was placed in July by the telecommunications industry, which saw a drop of over a quarter compared with the same month last year. Foodstuffs were also advertised less - with the exception of sausages and meat: during the barbecue season, manufacturers invested over a quarter more in advertising for these products. (pd/SDA)
