S1 to make a profit as early as 2016

According to Schweiz am Sonntag, S1 wants to be in the black in three years - with a mini-budget, Publigroupe money and an older target group.

Four months ago, Schweiz am Sonntag made the TV plans of Hardy Lussi and Mike Gut public (Werbewoche.ch reported). Now the newspaper is publishing Further background information for the planned launch of S1.

The aim is to target the growing, affluent "50+" target group, which, unlike younger sections of the population, is TV-savvy. According to the TV makers, their competitors are SRF and Sat 1. Every weekday evening there is a theme - feature films, documentaries, cooking - or comedy on Sundays, as a direct attack on SRF's market share with "Giacobbo/Müller". In the afternoon, children's programs, sales shows and cooking formats are shown. From 5 to 6 pm, the popular helicopter camera flights over Switzerland will be shown, as they used to be on SRF ("Swiss View"). For cost reasons, news and political programs will be omitted - with the exception of Filippo Leutenegger's "Politarena".

According to research by Schweiz am Sonntag, two million francs are to be provided by Publigroupe and Publicitas in the form of a loan. The share capital is only 250,000 francs. According to a projected income statement, a profit of 850,000 francs is already expected in 2016. According to the newspaper, industry experts consider this to be "very ambitious", if not "utopian". Looking to the future, S1 is expected to generate a profit of 6.3 million francs in 2018 - with 13.4 million francs in advertising revenue from TV commercials. Costs are currently being kept low: The low-cost broadcaster currently employs nine staff (SRF: 1600). (hae/SaS)

Walder: "Bleicher was not burnt out".

Ringier CEO Marc Walder speaks with the NZZ am Sonntag about the reasons for Andrea Bleicher's dismissal and about new sources of revenue for the media company.

According to Walder, Bleicher was not convincing in business and politics, as well as in social issues - in contrast to the remaining three relevant Blick subject areas (sports, news and entertainment). Bleicher had turned down "a very good offer." Lüchinger brings great experience in the previously neglected areas - as does his deputy Andreas Dietrich.

As for the role of Frank A. Meyer in connection with the removal of Bleicher, Walder leaves questions unanswered. Ringier has "precisely defined processes" for how decisions are made. He and Michael Ringier had ultimately decided in favor of Lüchinger - whom Meyer did not even know personally. Meyer was "not involved. Nevertheless, Walder admits that Meyer played a strong role in the background at Riniger. "The most important journalist who has ever worked in this company" often calls, criticizes, inspires and sometimes annoys - but decisions are made in the committees.

Walder comments on the statement that Lüchinger fits in with Ringier because they both mix journalism and commerce as a "clumsy insinuation. Lüchinger did not take up his post until 2014 because he still had mandates to finish at his company. Blick also makes a clear distinction and provides independent journalism: it recently angered Ringier advisor Hitzfeld with an article that was wrong in content. And it reported widely on the Robbie Williams concert, even though it had not been organized by Ringier subsidiary Good News.

Walder is satisfied with the profit margins of Ringier's entertainment division. Tickets would soon also be sold in Eastern Europe. The declining print advertising revenues would also be offset by the large investments in online classifieds portals such as Jobs.ch or the Scout24 Group. The Ringier CEO is interested in the TV market - especially 3 Plus: Dominik Kaiser must " think about what it will take to make the next big step with his channel." (hae/NZZaS)

Wilmaa wants to conquer the living room

Wilmaa will soon launch its own TV box with a simple remote control. Thanks to fiber-optic technology, bundled packages should be possible. Other Internet TV providers are also giving established companies a run for their money.

According to the NZZ am Sonntag, the "Wilmaa Box" is to be launched at the end of 2013 "in time for the Christmas season". Head of Press Michael Loss is keeping a low profile with the newspaper, but reveals that the company will also be launching fiber optic offers at the same time - which will also enable combined offers (Internet, TV, telephone) like those of the competition (cable providers, Swisscom, Sunrise).

The "Wilmaa Box" is designed to simplify the TV experience - according to Loss, too many remote controls, too many buttons and too complex menu navigation have made life difficult for customers up to now. The Wilmaa remote control should only have seven buttons and work for all devices in the living room.

Other online TV service providers have also long since entered the battle for the home television set: Teleboy and Zattoo have their own apps on internet-enabled Samsung televisions. Both companies are also working on getting onto the devices of other manufacturers. The new Xbox, which will be released in 2014, seems particularly interesting in this context - because it is connected to both the TV and, as a rule, the internet.

As the NZZ am Sonntag writes, Google will soon have a say in the competitive TV market. With a USB stick called Chromecast, browser content can be streamed directly to the TV from any device. Apple TV can also do this - but only from Apple devices and at a significantly higher price (Chromecast costs 35 dollars in the USA). (hae/NZZaS)

ADC Young Creatives Award 2013

Suva is focusing on the young and is involved as this year's main sponsor of the most important Swiss creative competition for young talent, the ADC Young Creatives Awards 2013.

The creative challenge for the 7th edition of the ADC Young Creatives Award comes from Lucerne, from Suva. "In Switzerland, 25,000 apprentices suffer an occupational accident every year. Unfortunately, an average of three apprentices lose their lives in the process. We cannot and do not want to accept this and are therefore eager to hear the participants' ideas on how to sensitize apprentices to the topic of occupational safety," says Beat Enderlin, communications consultant at Suva. Concrete information on the content of the briefing will be provided at the warm-up event on September 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the ADC Galerie, Zentralstrasse 18, in Zurich. Registration for the briefing event is now open at Adc.ch/youth possible.

In addition to Suva, the organizer is pleased to have the support of sponsors APG|SGA Out of Home Media, Goldbach Interactive, Swissfilm Association, Streuplan AG and now Keystone. Keystone will support the newcomers in gaining access to high-quality image material. The four remaining sponsors represent, as before, the categories Outdoor, Cyber (Digital), Film and Alternative Media.

The media support for Switzerland's most important creative competition for young talent is provided by Werbewoche and Persönlich. The youth channel JOIZ is also on board. The organizers are ADC Switzerland, supported by BSW Swiss Leading Agencies and presented by Publicitas.

There are four coveted ADC Young Creatives Awards to be won. The three winning teams from the categories Outdoor, Cyber and Film will travel to the international "Young Lions Competition", to the advertising festival in Cannes, where they will officially represent Switzerland next year.

Etextera strengthens team fourfold

Etextera has had a successful first half of 2013. To ensure that the women's text agency could handle ongoing requests competently and within the shortest possible time, it added four more copywriters and editors to the team.

As the agency writes in a press release, there is an increased demand for search engine optimized texts for websites and newsletters as well as for holistic communicative project management. In order to be able to meet all orders, the management brought four more competent and experienced copywriters and editors into the team. Bettina Hersberger, Isabella Jungo, Dorothea Vollenweider and Mirjam Oertli are now writing for Etextera.

Ruth Hardegger-Wickli, Managing Director of Etextera, comments: "Despite the uncertain economic situation, we were literally overwhelmed with orders in the first half of the year. The four new writers had to prove their skills without a warm-up period. Which they did with flying colors."

NZZ Media Group: Print advertising down, online up

At 11.7 million Swiss francs, the NZZ Media Group’s earnings for the first half of 2013 were 5.9 million Swiss francs lower than in the previous year. The main reasons for the decline in earnings are significant drops in revenue in the print advertising market.

In the first half of 2013, the NZZ Media Group's operating revenue was once again impacted by the effects of the ongoing structural change in the media industry, which is primarily reflected in the declining revenue from the print advertising market. Although Ostschweiz am Sonntag, which was successfully launched in March of this year, generated additional income according to the press release, overall revenue from the print advertising market fell by almost 10 percent compared to the previous year. Both job and commercial advertisements are affected by this decline, which has a particular impact on regional media.

By contrast, revenues in the digital advertising market were almost stable. A decline at regional radio and television stations was offset by higher income in the online sector. In the reader market, income remained at the previous year's level: income from digital subscriptions developed positively, while print circulation continued to decline. Print income fell by 7 percent compared to the previous year. Although additional orders were won in newspaper printing, revenue was impacted by the difficult and volatile market environment in the commercial printing segment.

Total operating expenses fell by 5% to CHF 226.6 million compared to the same period of the previous year. The decrease was mainly due to cost savings in personnel and operating expenses as well as improved conditions and lower variable costs in direct expenses. However, these lower expenses only partially offset the decline in sales, as a result of which the operating result (EBIT) fell by CHF 5.6 million year-on-year to CHF 15.1 million and the EBIT margin fell to 6.3%.
Equity including minority interests fell by CHF 10.1 million to CHF 408.3 million in the first half of the year. The decline is mainly due to dividend distributions and goodwill offsetting from acquisitions. The equity ratio fell slightly by one percentage point to 69% compared to the beginning of the year.

The economic development in the first half of 2013 once again highlights the extent to which income in the advertising market and the development of the number of print subscriptions in the reader markets have been affected by the digital transformation. The media industry will continue to feel the effects of this ongoing negative development in the second half of the year. For this reason, the company is focusing in particular on a consistent strategic orientation towards new sources of income.

Rocchi fights back

Journalist Ludovic Rocchi and the newspaper Le Matin have filed an appeal against the house searches ordered by the Neuchâtel judicial authorities last week. Data was seized during the operation.

With the complaint, Rocchi and the newspaper want to express their "united opposition to the working methods of the prosecutor Nicolas Aubert". Data protection is a principle that the newspaper does not allow to be negotiated with, Le Matin stated in a media release on Friday. During the searches on Aug. 13, material belonging to the journalist's wife was also seized. Le Matin newspaper questioned the actions of the judiciary.

Questions about the approach of the judiciary

One rightly wonders whether the public prosecutor had not wanted to teach a journalist who was too disruptive for the Neuchâtel authorities a lesson, said Eric Hoesli, director of the Tamedia publishing house's publications in western Switzerland. nLudovic Rocchi himself commented on the case in the newspaper of Syndicom, the media and communications union: "They're trying to scare people so they stop talking to the press." The journalists' association Imprint spoke of a blatant violation of press freedom. On the website of the media magazine Edito+Klartext, the former president of the Press Council, Peter Studer, called the "raid" on the journalist's apartment scandalous, disproportionate and a curtailment of media freedom.

Series of articles about accusations of plagiarism at the University of Neuchâtel

The reason for the searches was a lawsuit against Rocchi for defamation, slander and violation of official secrecy. A professor at the University of Neuchâtel is behind the lawsuit. Rocchi's articles about the professor had led the Neuchâtel State Council in the spring to decide to launch an administrative investigation into allegations of plagiarism at the University of Neuchâtel's economics faculty. Last week, Neuchâtel Education Director Monika Maire-Hefti announced that this administrative investigation would move forward. The report on the plagiarism allegations could be available as early as the end of August. (SDA)
