Last but not least: Mysterious breakthrough

The election campaign video of SPD candidate Andrea Wicklein has already been viewed almost 200,000 times on YouTube. That's quite a lot for an unspectacular election campaign video. Now people are speculating about the reasons for its success.

The video is a school project by high school graduate Nico Marquardt and was created in politics class. He partly produced it and, above all, distributed it very successfully. The 19-year-old has a celebrity following on Twitter, with around 370,000 people following him.

Was it luck? Were the clicks manipulated? Or does the 19-year-old Marquardt simply know how to do this?

The video is really not worth watching.

Market for specialty magazines booming

Magazines aimed at the general public are finding it increasingly difficult to hold their own—the countless specialized publications are cutting into their market share.

This is what the SonntagsZeitung writes based on a survey by kiosk operator Valora. Among advertisers, too, magazines would lose importance for a broad audience. Advertisers prefer to advertise their products on channels that are precisely tailored to their target groups.

This is how market fragmentation is progressing. Valora's press range currently comprises over 4000 titles - and demand for printed matter is rising. Since the beginning of the year, publishers from Switzerland and abroad have launched 498 new magazines for the Swiss market. The biggest growth has been in serialized novels and puzzles. Many new titles were launched in the leisure sector.

Two things stand out in particular. One is the dominance of foreign publishers. The other is the high turnover of these magazines. Since the beginning of the year, Valora has removed 347 titles from its shelves. Success in this game comes to those who track down new "communities" early on and supply them with insider information. And those who drop out again in good time.

The corresponding website Sympany-tips.ch can also be visited without a streetcar ride.

The streetcar interior, tips, microsite and mobile version were designed by Alpha 245. The streetcar rolled out of the VBZ depot for its maiden voyage at the beginning of September.

The look sees pink

The tabloid Blick will appear on pink paper on Friday as an exception. The reason: the entire issue has been booked exclusively by a single advertising customer.

The optics chain McOptik, which operates throughout Switzerland, is celebrating its 15th anniversary in this unusual way. In the Blick of Friday, September 20, only McOptik advertisements will appear.

The campaign is for Switzerland's largest paid newspaper (720,000 readers daily according to the new Mach Basic 2013-2, Werbewoche.ch reported) is a novelty: "There has never been anything comparable before," Ringier is pleased to report. With this campaign, Blick is once again underlining its willingness to come up with unusual, innovative and unconventional ideas in the advertising market. The media company assures that the special promotion is purely an advertising customer campaign. It is not associated with any editorial services.

However, the idea of using colored paper to cause a stir is not entirely new. Back in 2008, the free newspaper 20 Minuten colored itself yellow for a day for Rivella (Werbewoche.ch reported) - and thus caused comments (for example here and here).

Media Focus: Advertising market remains stable

In August, the Swiss advertising market recorded advertising expenditure of 308.5 million Swiss francs. This represents a slight decline of -0.5 percent compared with the previous year. Advertising expenditure measured between January and August was on par with the previous year’s figure.

Focus on combination deals
However, advertising pressure in the telecommunications sector was down 26.4 percent year-on-year in August. At the same time, the segment of combined offers for residential users grew by 77.5 percent. Instead of advertising the various services for residential customers individually, the major providers Swisscom and UPC Cablecom focused advertising spending on their combination offers, which combine Internet, telephone and TV.

Large vehicles - large advertising pressure
In August, the vehicle sector showed the highest growth compared with the previous year's figures, with an increase of 38.7 percent. This also shows that the larger the vehicles, the greater the absolute increase in the advertising pressure used.
