New Managing Director for Swiss Marketing

With the appointment of Nicole Beck-Taubenest as the new Managing Director, the management structures at the Olten office will also be adapted. Nicole Beck-Taubenest will now be responsible for the overall management of Swiss Marketing. In this function, the Education and Examination department will also report directly to her.

49-year-old Nicole Beck-Taubenest studied business administration at the University of Bern (lic. rer. pol.) and later added a postgraduate degree to this (completed postgraduate studies Master in Health Administration, University of Bern). She gained her experience in marketing and market research during more than 20 years of working for the pharmaceutical industry. She has also been an expert in market research for the sales specialists since 1995 and took over the management of this examination in the fall of 2010 as successor to Walter Zeller.

With the appointment of an overall manager, the Board of Swiss Marketing aims to professionalize the administrative processes at the office and to further expand the range of services offered to members. Other focal points are the strategic growth that has been initiated at the association level and the strengthening of the dual education system, which Swiss Marketing supports at various levels.

Fiasco over radio and TV fees

OFCOM lacks the staff to combat naysayers. Two current proposals therefore aim to abolish or overhaul radio and TV license fees.

The Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) would have police powers in many areas to investigate illicit broadcasters. But it lacks the personnel. Digitization also poses problems for the authorities. Two plans therefore want to abolish or revamp radio and TV fees. The Sunday newspaper reported on the current debacle.

Abolition of fees

Since last week, signatures have been collected for the initiative to abolish radio and TV fees (Advertisingweek.ch reported) of the organization "Solidarische Schweiz" (SOS). The initiative committee has until 2015 to do so. A similar initiative was defeated last year.

Fees for all households

The Federal Council, on the other hand, is proposing a partial revision of the Radio and TV Act (RTVA), which will soon be debated in parliament. All households should pay fees in the future - regardless of whether they own equipment or not. An office such as Billag will continue to be responsible for collecting the fees. Politicians such as SVP National Councilor Nathalie Rickli and Economiesuisse are already calling for a so-called "opting out": households without devices should be allowed to opt out again. Should the passage find its way into the RTVG, cheating on fees is likely to continue unabated, according to the Sonntagszeitung.

Financing via fixed share of value added tax

For deputy editor-in-chief Simon Bärtschi, both paths are wrong, as he writes in a commentary. The model of fee-financed media is indispensable in Switzerland. But the Federal Council's proposal is controversial, as the consultation process has shown: Business associations demand that people who consciously forgo radio and television consumption should not have to pay a fee. Because the control would be too costly, Bärtschi only has the radical option: everyone pays media tax. However, without a collection agency and with collection via a fixed proportion of the value-added tax.

Joiz: Nicolas Bürer becomes managing director

Nicolas Bürer is moving from Deindeal to Joiz, where he will manage the Swiss business in a newly created position. The 35-year-old was previously Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer at Deindeal.

Nicolas Bürer will take over as head of Joiz's Swiss business from January 1, 2014. The physics graduate is to further establish Joiz in the Swiss audience and advertising market over the next few years and drive forward the digital business models.

CEO Alexander Mazzara is looking forward to the new Managing Director: "In Nicolas Bürer, we have found an experienced colleague and expert. The fusion of TV, online, mobile and social media enables new digital business models. Nicolas Bürer brings a great deal of know-how and contacts with him to further expand this area and successfully continue the previous activities."

Nicolas Bürer comments: "I am delighted to take on this position in the Joiz Switzerland team. It's an exciting time and I can't wait to get started on the further expansion and implementation of the new digital business models."

Nicolas Bürer replaces COO Dominik Stroppel at Joiz, who has managed the Swiss business on an interim basis since the expansion to Germany and the associated founding of the Joiz Group. Dominik Stroppel will be able to concentrate fully on his role as COO of the Joiz Group again from January 1. With the appointment of Nicolas Bürer, the transformation of Joiz into a holding company with three operating companies is almost complete.

Watch brands: Rolex most valuable

As shown by the 2013 ranking of the most valuable watch brands compiled by BV4, not only luxury watches but also affordable watches such as Swatch have seen a significant increase in value. Rolex remains at the top.

In the latest study on the values of Swiss branded watches, the brand valuation company BV4 evaluated both qualitative aspects, i.e. the strength of the respective brands, and took a close look at the financial values of the most valuable watch brands. For the first time, the digital brand strength was also determined and taken into account on the basis of various factors at the digital touchpoints (e.g. web presence and presence on social media platforms). As in the previous year, the 20 most valuable brands were included in the ranking.

Rolex successfully defended its position as the most valuable Swiss watch brand with a brand value of 5.074 billion Swiss francs. There was also no change in the ranks one to five from last year to this year. In contrast, the brand values of Rolex have increased by eleven percent, those of Swatch by ten percent, and those of Cartier and Omega by eight percent each. Of the 15 brands that followed, only Tag Heuer (+11 percent) and Hublot (+10 percent) were able to increase their brand values by double digits. They are followed by Tissot with nine percent, IWC with four percent and Breitling with a two percent increase in value. All the other eleven brands - i.e. a good half - have to accept a lower valuation of between one and seven percent and thus drop one place in the ranking. The biggest jumps were made by Hublot from 20th to 18th place and IWC from tenth to eighth place.

The 20 most valuable Swiss watch brands together are worth a total of over 21 billion Swiss francs. This is a very good report card for Swiss watch companies. In addition to technically superior products, Swiss watch companies also manage to create unique brand worlds. Thanks to their strong brands, Swiss watch manufacturers offer a high added value, which is extremely appreciated by their worldwide clientele. Customers are willing to pay a premium for this emotional added value. According to BV4, it is precisely this fact that makes Swiss watch brands strong and valuable brands.

Megura: Ten-year anniversary party

"It's our birthday - you the party" was the invitation. The word was kept: The Megura agency celebrated its tenth birthday in the Löwenscheune in Wettingen with a lavish party.

More than 200 guests accepted the invitation, including numerous personalities from business and politics. For once, the advertisers did not put their customers in the right light, but themselves. Here too: with success - thanks to the active support of the numerous customers and friends who attended, but also of celebrities such as former Miss Switzerland Anita Buri, who hosted the evening, Wettingen's mayor Markus Dieth, who praised Megura as an exemplary Wettingen SME, or Council of States member Pascale Bruderer, who was impressed by the agency's results. Visibly moved, the owner and managing director, René Utiger, followed not only words of thanks, but actions: The champagne corks popped and a celebratory toast was made. "Here's to ten years of fresh communication, unaffected creativity and uncomplicated approaches to solutions - and to many more anniversary celebrations," the agency said in a statement.

Meta Design: Campaign for Jura Materials

Meta Design, on behalf of Jura Materials, expresses the ecological advantages of Jura Eco cement with a broad-based campaign.

With over one million tons of cement per year, Jura Cement, a subsidiary of Jura Meterials, plays a major role in shaping Switzerland's living space. This brings with it a responsibility that Jura Cement consciously fulfills through its sustainable Jura Cement. Meta Design expresses this responsibility through a Jura Eco campaign. The goal: to make Jura Eco the standard cement. The campaign's protagonists are ecoists - construction workers, architects, builders - who make a strong statement for Jura Eco and motivate others to become ecoists.

The campaign gives Jura Eco cement a comprehensive presence via a mailing, folding posters, ads in trade journals, a product film, Jura Eco cement bags, silo applicators and sheets, and reaches the target group on a broad basis. André Germann, Head of Sales at Jura Materials: "The down-to-earth nature of the industry and the sensitivity to responsibility are appropriately expressed in the Ecoist - also with the necessary wink. The broad and consistent communication gives the campaign additional strength." Benjamin Gilgen, Meta Design management: "The close and direct collaboration with Jura Cement has enabled a rapid and broad market presence."

Leo Burnett: Woz is actually against 1:12

Leo Burnett Switzerland has created an ad for the latest issue of the Woz and reveals that the left-wing newspaper is actually opposed to the 1:12 initiative.

The Juso's 1:12 initiative is currently being hotly debated in all political camps, and next weekend Swiss voters will be able to decide on the proposal. Although the weekly Woz is known as a left-wing newspaper, it surprises us with an unexpected statement: Woz is actually against the 1:12 initiative. There is a good reason for this. For more than thirty years, the Woz has gone far beyond the wage ratio of 1:12 as the maximum wage gap within a company: namely, there is wage equality, i.e. 1:1. Whether man or woman, whether ad salesperson or editorial manager, whether twenty years in the company or six weeks: At Woz, everyone earns the same amount. Woz editor Kaspar Surber himself proves that this works quite well and lets some comrades have their say in a detailed article in the current Woz. Of course, in the end it is a plea for the 1:12 initiative. You have to start somewhere...

Convergence: Displeasure on the Tagi Editorial Board

The merger of print and online at the Tages-Anzeiger has led to discontent in the editorial department: 121 employees have signed a letter of protest. The editorial team now wants to examine ways to reduce the workload.

"We want to do our job" is the title of the five-page protest letter, the first page of which was published on Twitter on Thursday. The mood on the editorial staff is often depressed or irritated, some complain about a workload "far beyond the correct measure". But the editorial team is not fundamentally opposed to convergence: the letter calls the merger "a good thing." Convergence brought colleagues together, but it did not convey a sense of departure, it said. 121 print and online journalists, picture department staff and proofreaders signed the letter of protest, according to an inquiry with the editorial office. The letter was written by the so-called "Group 200" from the editorial department.

Two working groups established

The letter of protest was handed over to the editor-in-chief on Wednesday. The editor-in-chief wants to take the letter seriously, as Tages-Anzeiger editor-in-chief Res Strehle confirmed on Thursday in response to a question from the news agency SDA, according to reports from Persoenlich.com and Südostschweiz. The editor-in-chief had known that convergence would be a difficult process with a lot of new things. The editors-in-chief now want to see how the positions with high workloads can be relieved. Two working groups have been set up for this purpose. According to Strehle, however, there is usually a good atmosphere in the day-to-day editorial work. According to Strehle, the goal is for the merged editorial team to be well positioned by spring 2014. Then Tamedia wants to introduce a payment model on the news portals Tages-Anzeiger and Der Bund.

Imprint and Syndicom welcome the initiative

Imprint welcomes the Tagi editorial team's initiative in a statement issued on Thursday. The journalists' association criticizes, among other things, that the editorial office has to take on more and more tasks without being equipped with the appropriate staff. The model that much more can be done with the same number of resources thanks to convergence and cooperation only works out on the drawing board the way Tamedia's management would like it to. It was time for the management to admit that more could not be done with less. This must also be made clear to the main shareholders. Tamedia must finally draw the consequences from this - also with regard to the return targets.

In a press release, the Syndicom union also expressed its satisfaction with the initiative. With this, a large part of the editorial staff is committed to improving the working conditions, the processes, the orientation and the quality of the publications for which they work with heart and soul, with well-founded criticism and serious suggestions. Syndicom sees the traces of Tamedia's cost-cutting policy in the situation criticized by the editorial staff and hopes that the employees' concerns will be listened to by Tamedia's owners. Syndicom assures the editorial staff of its support in achieving its goals, because working conditions and quality should not be subordinated to the profit targets of the shareholders. (SDA/PD/hae)
