Last but not least: What does Twitter owe me?

Twitter's IPO is a windfall. But how much do individual Twitter feeds contribute to that? An online calculator provides the answer.

Following the successful IPO of the short message service Twitter last week, more and more tweet-loving contemporaries are asking themselves what share they have in this windfall with their published messages. The American news magazine Time has therefore published a Simple form to calculate the value of public Twitter feeds. This takes into account the number of published tweets, the number of followers and the time since which tweets have been posted. These figures are then offset against information from the prospectus for the IPO.

We learn that the leader of the free world, President Barack Obama, would be worth 5.2 million dollars. However, this is nothing compared to teen pop star Justin Bieber, whose incessant tweeting would be worth 21.2 million dollars. Of course, the Twitter bosses do not intend to compensate their users for their creative work. There are two ways of looking at this: Does someone write a clever sentence every day for five years and then someone else comes along and publishes these fruits of creative labor and makes a killing - should the author get something out of it or not? Or is it more like e-mails and the Internet provider: If someone writes a lot of e-mails to a lot of recipients, no one would dream of asking the telecom provider for money. It doesn't matter, because according to the Time calculator, tweeting luminaries from the Swiss media world would only get away with peanuts anyway.

Schoch&Sonders: Wine embellished, team strengthened

Schoch&Sonders created the brand design for the latest product from Schuler St. Jakobskellerei and welcomes two new employees.

The fine wine from the Selezione Fellini is a piece of aristocratic wine history from Tuscany, according to the press release. The brand design also represents the nobility of this Chianti, which is produced according to Barone Ricasoli's original recipe. The label is reminiscent of Barone Ricasoli with elements such as the crown and the Tuscan origin is conveyed by the Pegasus. The value of this masterpiece is enhanced by the feel of the paper chosen and the golden hot foil stamping.

Jean Etienne A. at the House of Communication

The Burgerstocker Gallery is presenting the «Undercolor Diary» series by artist and advertising legend Jean Etienne A. The opening reception will take place on November 14 at the Haus der Kommunikation and will be hosted by Martin Heller.

Jean Etienne A. is a doyen of Swiss advertising. The connection between advertising and art is noticeable in two or three of his forty or so exhibited works and in the first exhibition venue. From November 14, the Burgerstocker Gallery in the Haus der Kommunikation will be exhibiting Jean Etienne A.'s series of works "Undercolor Diary": Monochrome collages of striking signal effect and narrative density, which do not reveal everything at first glance and allow to discover something new with each viewing.

"The occupants of the Haus der Kommunikation, Serviceplan Suisse, Plan.Net and Serviceplan PR are delighted to be able to provide Galerie Burgerstocker and Jean Etienne A. with a respectable space," confirms Christian Baertschi, spokesman for the HdK and partner of Serviceplan Suisse. The building's previous tenant, a high school, used the marble hall as a school cafeteria.

Sacha Moser, Partner and Creative Director of Serviceplan Suisse: "This exhibition fulfills two wishes at once. Firstly, Burgerstocker presents an artist and creative who we hold in exceptionally high esteem. Secondly, we are launching our concept of using the hall as a platform for various events, training courses, exhibitions, as a photo or film studio or even as a pop-up store. We have an open ear for innovative requests."

The exhibition will be opened on Thursday, 14.11. at 6 p.m. in the Haus der Kommunikation at Freiestrasse 129 in Zurich Hottingen. For further opening hours please see the website Burgerstocker.com. You can learn more about the House of Communication at Serviceplan.ch

Internal communicator of the year

The Swiss Association for Internal Communication (SVIK) presented the «Golden Pen» award on November 12 in Zurich. Oscar A. Kambly was named Internal Communicator of the Year.

According to the press release, the winners of this year's SVIK rating are companies with highly professional internal communications. The SICC awarded the "Golden Pen" in five categories; 79 internal communication tools were submitted to the jury for assessment. The big winner is SBB.

Winner in the respective category:

Employee newspapers and staff magazines: SBB, On the road

Front cover: SBB, On the road

Company journalistic texts: Solothurn Hospitals, SOH Magazine

Electronic internal communication: Bobst Group, Bobst Community

Concepts and strategies: SBB, "Prix SBB" as part of "SBB mission statement communication"

Special award for internal communicator of the yearOscar A. Kambly

The award winner is the third generation of the Kambly family to run the company, which is based in Trubschachen. Since Mr. Kambly took over the business in 1983, he has succeeded in continuously developing the company. Open-mindedness and modesty are not just foreign currencies for Oscar A. Kambly; he also lives them. "That's a real, modern patron. If there were more of them, business journalism would have to look for new topics," says the jury president, Daniel L. Ambühl.

To the SVIK rating

There is a glaring discrepancy between the cheapest medium at CHF 3,600 and the most expensive at CHF 1.45 million. However, this does not mean that the cheapest channels are the least effective. On the contrary: they can often be used in a very targeted manner. The frequency of publication has increased slightly across the entire range of submissions examined. Only 20 percent of submissions are now published twice a year. Nevertheless, 50 percent of the media are published four times a year. It is astonishing that 30 percent of the channels already appear between five and ten times a year.

The Swiss Association for Internal Communication (SVIK) has been committed to the further development and professionalization of internal communication in Switzerland since 1944. The approximately 300 members from business, administration and non-profit organizations benefit from a wide range of practice-oriented training and regional events. The SVIK conferences and the SVIK rating for internal communication media have been held since 1944. The association is an active member of the European umbrella organization Federation of European Business Communicators.

Investigative journalism sought

Tamedia and the Sonntagszeitung, in collaboration with the Swiss School of Journalism (Maz), are announcing the third edition of their grant program for investigative journalism.

It aims to promote journalistic quality in the field of investigative journalism and is announced annually. Le Matin Dimanche, the Sunday newspaper's partner newspaper in French-speaking Switzerland, offers a similar program together with Tamedia. Outstanding research and reportage are considered. The decisive factor is the competent, differentiated, lively and generally comprehensible communication of complex topics. The contributions submitted should make interrelationships and developments comprehensible to a broad audience. Works are honored that are distinguished by original, thorough research, critical background information, powerful analysis and clear language, and that are exemplary because of their public impact.

The sponsorship program is aimed at applicants who have not yet reached the age of 35 and have a degree in journalism (Maz, ZHAW, CRFJ). Selection is made by the Sunday newspaper's editorial board and the Maz. Participants will be given the opportunity for one year of paid further training in the field, at the research desk in Bern as of April 1, 2014.

Last but not least: Selfie Glöggli

A selfie here, a selfie there—these days, the world loves nothing more than taking pictures of itself. One campaign acts as if it had always been that way.

The social media generation has one great strength: the self-portrait. In the past, famous painters would spend days painting themselves in front of a mirror - only to be dismayed to discover that they were unrecognizable. Today, it's easier: thousands of selfies see the light of day every second, are shared, rated, commented on and forgotten via all kinds of social channels. In this way, young women have established the so-called duck face as a global no-go: the duck kissing mouth, photographed with a smartphone from the advantageous half-up position (eyes large, chin small). Many a young woman takes her clothes off and was recently informed by Pro Juventute about possible side effects and after-effects (Werbewoche.ch reported).

Lowe South Africa has taken this phenomenon as an opportunity to transform classics of press photo history into self-portraits for the Cape Times newspaper. The claim: "You can't get any closer to the news". This is almost reminiscent of an earlier Wirz campaign for Schweizer Illustrierte ("Closer to the stars"). (hae)

Paroli: New concept for ETH magazine

Starting this fall semester, the ETH community is receiving *Life* magazine for the first time in a new design and in two separate language versions. Paroli is responsible for the new concept.

The new magazine informs ETH members about the development of the university and provides an insight into campus activities. The aim, according to the statement, is to promote dialogue within ETH Zurich and to convey values. Along with the intranet, Life magazine is the second main channel of internal communication. The magazine is characterized by explanatory background articles and reports. Another aspect of the cross-media concept is that the two channels push each other. For example, the print medium triggers certain topics or discussions that can be continued on the intranet or vice versa. The magazine is published four times a year in German and English.

With a clear, reduced structure, simple reading guidance as well as a generous visual language and a lot of variety in the sequence of contents and formats, the new magazine aims to encourage reading. Playful design elements such as illustrations, texts in full-page images or supplementary boxes and graphics invite readers to delve into the topics. In order to incorporate the cross-media aspects, the magazine received supplementary boxes and graphics as well as further links that promote dialog.

Responsible at University Communications ETH Zurich are: Norbert Staub (Head of Internal Communications), Florian Meyer (Project Management), Thomas Langholz (Consulting and Editorial), Angela Harp (English Editorial), Jun Sarbach (Consulting), Josef Kuster, Andrea Lingk, Edisa Balje (Corporate Design and Graphics). Responsible at Paroli Agency: Oliver Suter (Partner, Managing Director Paroli), Tanja Hollenstein (Partner, Managing Director Paroli, Project Management), Christoph Schiess (Art Director).

Brilliant result without highlights

This year, 20 out of 21 graduates passed the advanced professional examination to become communications managers. However, with a top grade of 4.8, there were no outstanding individual results.

This year's candidates were clearly well prepared, according to a press release. With a pass rate of 95 percent, the 2013 examination year achieved a brilliant result overall. However, there were no real highlights or high-flyers as in other years. Stefan Hauser, information officer for the city of Wil SG, and Manuel Wirz from Peter Wirz in Zurich both achieved the best average grade of 4.8 (photo). For once this year, male graduates predominated with twelve out of 21 participants. It is also astonishing that only nine participants took advantage of the opportunity to take the exam on a PC. This broad success is all the more remarkable given that the graduates had to make major financial and time sacrifices to obtain their diploma. The private and professional burden of in-service training has tended to increase in recent years, as indicated by an increasing number of drop-outs due to overload or health problems in the run-up to the examination.
